A doctorate in engineering (Promotion in den Ingenieurwissenschaften) is often closely tied to research projects funded by third-party money or by companies. These come with different contracts than a standard university post, and the contract decides how long you are funded and how you are insured.
Short answer: Engineering doctoral candidates are funded by third-party project posts, by posts in cooperation projects with companies, by scholarships or by their own resources. A paid post usually creates compulsory insurance as an employee. The doctoral scholarship of the scholarship foundations reaches up to 1,750 euros basic scholarship per month (October 2026). Last updated: October 2026.
The most important points at a glance
- Third-party funded post: the term follows the funding decision of the project, and an extension needs new money.
- Industrial project: a company funds the project, while the university supervises the dissertation.
- Fixed-term contracts: up to six years before the doctorate under § 2 (1) sentence 1 WissZeitVG (Fixed-Term Contracts in Academia Act), if the post serves your qualification.
- Insurance: with pay you are insured as an employee. Student insurance (KVdS) ends with the age limit of 30.
- Results: contracts govern publication, confidentiality and exploitation rights. These points shape your dissertation.
How do you fund a doctorate in engineering?
Funding depends heavily on the project that carries you. An overview of positions and scholarships is available in Promotionsstelle oder Stipendium.
| Source of the post | Typical term | Health insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party funded research post | Tied to the funding decision | Compulsory insurance as an employee if you are paid |
| Post in an industrial project | Term set in the cooperation contract | Compulsory insurance as an employee if you are paid |
| Doctoral scholarship | As set by the call, maximum 1,750 euros (October 2026) | Student insurance or voluntary insurance, check in your case |
| Own resources | Set by your own planning | Student insurance if the conditions are met, otherwise voluntary insurance |
Third-party funding, industrial project or budget post: what to watch
With third-party funding your term depends on a funding notice. With an industrial project it is set in the cooperation contract. The difference shows most clearly when a project ends early or results are confidential.
| Point | Third-party funded post | Industrial project |
|---|---|---|
| What sets the term | Funding notice of the project | Cooperation contract with the company |
| Extension | Only with new funding | Only with a new agreement |
| Publication | Usually under the project rules | Can be restricted by confidentiality |
| Inventions | Rules of the project and the university | Rules of the contract, check exploitation rights |
How long does a contract in a third-party funded project run?
Project posts at universities face two upper limits. The first is the funding approval of the project: if the project is approved for three years, your contract ends after three years at most, even if the law would allow more. The second is the Academic Fixed-Term Contracts Act. Under section 2(1) sentence 1, a post may be fixed-term for up to six years before the doctorate if it serves your own qualification. Sentence 2 allows a further six years after the doctorate. Sentence 3 requires a term that suits the qualification, and under sentence 4 two years are added for each child under 18.
Assumption: the funding runs for three years, but your dissertation needs four. Then a year of funding is missing, although the law would allow a longer contract. Plan with the funding approval, not with the statutory maximum. An average duration for engineering is not documented in the sources used here.
What contribution should you expect without a position?
Doctoral candidates without a position and without earnings may be insured in student health insurance if its conditions are met. The building blocks for 2026 (assumption: childless, aged 23 or over, average additional contribution):
- Basis: 855 euros per month, one thirtieth of the BAföG need rate for students living away from their parents (section 236 SGB V).
- Health insurance: 87.38 euros at a contribution rate of 10.22 percent.
- Additional contribution: 24.80 euros at an average of 2.9 percent; your insurer sets its own rate.
- Long-term care insurance: 35.91 euros, including the surcharge for childless people.
- Total: 148.09 euros per month (GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet, status 1 January 2026).
What to check in engineering in particular
- Confidentiality: check whether you may use measurement results or design data in your dissertation before you start the analysis.
- Test rig and laboratory: clarify in the contract or with the chair who provides the setup, materials and computing time.
- Project term: schedule your submission so that the dissertation falls within the funding period, otherwise the writing phase is unfunded.
- Doctoral regulations: check whether your faculty requires a monograph or allows a cumulative thesis based on publications.
Frequently asked questions
May I use results from the industrial project in my dissertation?
That depends on the cooperation contract. If it contains a confidentiality clause, you need the company’s approval before you publish results. Clarify this in writing before you start the analysis.
How does an industrial project affect my health insurance?
A paid employment contract usually creates compulsory insurance as an employee. Student insurance is only an option if no such employment exists. Your health insurer checks this in the individual case.
Can a scholarship replace a post?
A doctoral scholarship is not an employment relationship and therefore follows different rules. It usually covers living costs, not laboratory costs. The research cost allowance is 100 euros per month (status October 2026).
What happens if the third-party funding runs out before submission?
The fixed-term contract then ends with the project, unless new funding is found. Talk to your supervisor early about alternatives such as follow-on funding.
How to proceed now
- Clarify which project or budget pays your post and until when the funding runs.
- Read the cooperation contract for confidentiality, publication and exploitation rights.
- Check the doctoral regulations of your faculty, especially the form of the dissertation.
- Ask your health insurer before you sign the contract.
- Plan your submission date backwards from the end of the project term.
