A doctorate in chemistry (German: Promotion in der Chemie) leads to the title Dr. rer. nat. Many doctoral students work in a laboratory, often in a post tied to a research project. Funding, health insurance and accident cover during lab work are the questions that come up most. This guide places them in context with verified figures and sources.
Short answer: At a university, a qualification post may be fixed-term for up to six years under Section 2 WissZeitVG. The post’s term often depends on the project. A full-time post in grade E 13 ranged from 4,759.37 to 6,764.69 euros gross per month according to the TV-L table as of October 2026. Last updated: October 2026.
The most important points
- The title is Dr. rer. nat. The doctoral regulations (Promotionsordnung) of your faculty set access, requirements and submission.
- Many posts are tied to a project. The project’s term can limit the term of your post.
- Accident cover matters in the lab. Statutory accident insurance is set out in Book VII of the Social Code (SGB VII). The body responsible is the one that employs or enrols you.
- At a university, a qualification post may be fixed-term for up to six years under Section 2 WissZeitVG.
- With a scholarship you usually pay your health insurance yourself.
How long does a doctorate in chemistry take?
The law sets no fixed duration. The doctoral regulations set the requirements, and the lab work sets the pace. If measurements, syntheses or instruments wait for slots, the timetable slips. Build in a buffer and clarify early with your supervisor when your post ends.
| Funding route | Frame for duration | Governing rule |
|---|---|---|
| Project post at a university | Fixed term of up to six years, the project term may be shorter | Section 2 (1) WissZeitVG and contract |
| Post at a non-university research institute | Fixed term according to the contract and applicable fixed-term law | Employment contract |
| Doctoral scholarship | Period stated in the award | Award letter |
| Doctorate without post or scholarship | No statutory limit | Doctoral regulations of the faculty |
Accident cover in the lab: who is responsible?
In the lab you work with chemicals, gases and equipment. Statutory accident insurance is governed by Book VII of the Social Code (SGB VII). Whether you are covered through your employer, the university or another body depends on your status. Ask the university or your employer before you start work in the lab, and have the responsibility confirmed in writing. That way you know whom to contact in an emergency.
What does a full post pay? Worked example at step 4
Assumption: a full post in pay grade E 13, step 4, which means 5,873.56 euros gross per month. The basis is the published TV-L table as of October 2026. The amounts cover only health and long-term care insurance, without income tax, pension and unemployment insurance.
- Health insurance: 8.75 percent employee share, which is 513.94 euros.
- Long-term care insurance: 1.8 percent, which is 105.72 euros. If you are childless and 23 or older, it is 2.4 percent, or 140.97 euros.
Step 4 stays below the insurance threshold of 6,450 euros per month in 2026. You therefore remain compulsorily insured through your employer, unless another exemption applies. For net pay, use the calculator of the German Federal Ministry of Finance at bmf-steuerrechner.de.
Scholarship with the childless surcharge: the calculation
Assumption: basic scholarship of 1,750 euros and research costs allowance of 100 euros per month, together 1,850 euros, without family allowance. You are childless and 23 or older. The minimum contribution to voluntary statutory health insurance was 222.80 euros in 2026, and long-term care insurance with the childless surcharge was 55.37 euros. Together that is 278.17 euros, about 15 percent of the amount. With a child, long-term care insurance would be 47.46 euros.
Post or scholarship in chemistry: a decision aid
- Post: you work in a project team, with a contract, working hours and social insurance through your employer.
- Post: the term often follows the project. Ask what happens once the project ends.
- Scholarship: you have more room for topic and time, but usually pay your health insurance yourself.
- Scholarship: selection runs through the funding body, and deadlines and proofs are binding.
Frequently asked questions
Am I automatically insured against accidents when working in the lab?
Employees are insured by law against accidents at work. For scholarship holders, cover depends on whether they are enrolled or active at the university or institute. Clarify this with the university before you start in the lab.
Does the fixed term get longer if I have children?
At a university, the total duration is extended under Section 2 (1) sentence 4 WissZeitVG by two years for each child under 18 in your care. Have the extension confirmed in writing in your contract.
Can I do my doctorate at a research institute?
Many research institutes offer doctorates in cooperation with a university. What matters is which university awards the degree and under which doctoral regulations. Clarify this early, because the title and submission depend on it.
Who pays health insurance during a post?
With an employment contract, the employer pays its share and you pay the rest. With a scholarship you usually pay the full contribution yourself, unless you are covered as a family member.
What to do next
- Read the doctoral regulations and find out which university awards the degree.
- Ask the post’s employer about project term, contract length and extension options.
- Clarify accident cover in the lab in writing before you start.
- Calculate post or scholarship together with the social insurance contributions and confirm your health insurance.
