What does a mechanical engineer with a master’s degree earn when starting out in Germany? There is no fixed figure, because pay depends mainly on collective agreements, the actual job and the employer. This guide shows which numbers you can check, how the collective pay grading works and what to look for in a job offer. Terms in German are given in brackets where they first appear.
Short answer: The master’s degree alone does not set your starting salary. Under collective agreements (Tarifverträge) the job you actually do counts. As an example, the union IG Metall lists pay grade 12, level B for engineers in the Lower Saxony bargaining area, with 5,717 euros basic pay per month for a 35-hour week (valid from April 2026). That level describes an engineer in the fourth year, not a starting position. Last updated: October 2026.
The key points
- Under collective agreements the grading depends on your tasks. The degree alone does not decide the pay grade.
- IG Metall lists pay grade 12, level B for engineers in Lower Saxony: 5,717 euros basic pay per month from April 2026, full time.
- Without a collective agreement there is no binding pay table. Then your written offer is the only reference.
- The compulsory insurance threshold (Versicherungspflichtgrenze) for 2026 is 6,450 euros per month or 77,400 euros per year. It decides whether you can stay in statutory health insurance.
- For any comparison use the annual pay, including bonuses and performance pay, not only the monthly salary.
What your starting salary depends on
Many employers in the sector apply the collective agreement for the metal and electrical industry. Pay grades there reflect the requirements of the workplace. Whether you join as an engineer, whether you take on project responsibility and how demanding the tasks are matter more than the name of your degree.
In its brochure, IG Metall states explicitly that the actual grading depends on the requirements at the workplace. For engineering work it names pay grades 11 to 13. Only the employer or the local IG Metall office can make a precise assignment.
Clarify collective bargaining coverage in the interview
Ask whether the company pays under the metal and electrical collective agreement and which pay grade is planned for your role. A written offer that names the pay grade is the safest basis. A company-specific agreement or a pay outside collective terms can be structured very differently, so ask about both explicitly.
What the master’s degree really adds to your pay
A master’s degree is most useful when it proves skills the role needs, for example in simulation, design or automation. Whether it pays off compared with starting directly with a bachelor’s degree depends on your career goal and your employer. We discuss this trade-off in our guide Master or Work: Which Path Pays Off More? (in German: Master oder direkt arbeiten).
In the sources we checked we did not find reliable comparison figures for starting engineers with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. For that reason we do not give a range. For a broader orientation by field, see the German guide Ingenieur Einstiegsgehalt 2026 nach Fachrichtung (in German).
Figures you can verify
The table lists values that are fixed by collective agreement, statute or an official body. They do not replace a concrete offer, but they give you a benchmark.
| Figure | Amount | Valid from | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic pay engineer, pay grade 12 B, Lower Saxony (full time, 35 hours) | 5,717 euros per month | April 2026 | IG Metall, Gehälter für Ingenieur*innen 2025 bis 2026 (in German) |
| Same with performance pay (plus 10 percent) | 6,289 euros per month | April 2026 | IG Metall, same brochure |
| Compulsory insurance threshold (JAEG) | 6,450 euros per month, 77,400 euros per year | 2026 | GKV-Spitzenverband, fact sheet on 2026 contribution parameters (in German) |
| Contribution ceiling health and long-term care insurance | 5,812.50 euros per month | 2026 | GKV-Spitzenverband, fact sheet on 2026 contribution parameters (in German) |
| Contribution ceiling pension insurance | 8,450 euros per month | 2026 | German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung), in German |
Worked example: annual pay and insurance status (assumption)
Assumption: you start with 5,717 euros basic pay per month, receive 13 monthly salaries (one extra month paid as a bonus) and have no performance pay. Your annual pay is then 74,321 euros (5,717 times 13). That is below the 2026 compulsory insurance threshold of 77,400 euros.
Assumption: with performance pay of 6,289 euros per month and the same 13 salaries, you reach 81,757 euros. That is above the threshold. Here is how to check your own case:
- Note the monthly basic pay from the offer or the collective agreement.
- Multiply it by the number of monthly salaries your contract guarantees.
- Add regular allowances and performance pay if they are paid reliably.
- Compare the result with the 2026 threshold of 77,400 euros.
Whether this threshold matters for you depends only on your own figures. An overview of the routes between statutory and private health insurance is in the German guide Erster Job: Gesetzlich oder privat krankenversichert? (in German).
How to check a job offer
Before you sign, look at the offer in a structured way. These steps make offers comparable.
- Ask in writing for the pay grade and whether the company applies a collective agreement.
- Calculate annual pay including bonuses and performance pay, not only the monthly salary.
- Check gross and net with the federal finance ministry’s tax calculator (bmf-steuerrechner.de), instead of using estimated net figures.
- Compare holiday entitlement, working hours and extra benefits such as company pension schemes.
- Clarify the probation period and notice periods before you start.
Frequently asked questions
Does a master’s graduate in mechanical engineering automatically earn more?
Not automatically. Under collective agreements the grading follows the tasks. A master’s degree can open the way to more demanding roles, but it does not guarantee a higher pay grade. Ask specifically which responsibilities come with the position.
Does the IG Metall table apply across Germany?
No. The brochure refers to the Lower Saxony bargaining area. Other bargaining areas have their own tables with their own amounts. You can find the valid figures in the IG Metall collective agreement database or at the responsible local office.
Are the table values gross or net?
The table values are gross amounts. What remains net depends on your tax class, health insurance and number of children. For a net calculation the federal tax calculator is more reliable than any rule of thumb.
Does a Christmas bonus count as salary?
If it is contractually promised, it usually belongs to the annual pay and therefore also counts toward the compulsory insurance threshold. Check the exact wording in your contract.
How to proceed now
- Write down the offer with pay grade, monthly salary and bonuses.
- Calculate the annual pay and compare it with the 2026 threshold.
- Ask in writing about collective agreement coverage and grading.
- Check the net side with the federal tax calculator before you accept.
