Marriage changes more than your marital status: it can also change your wage tax class (Lohnsteuerklasse). Whether your take-home pay changes depends on which combination you choose and how your incomes are split. This guide explains what happens automatically, where you can take action, and why the final figures should be checked with a calculator.

Short answer: After marriage, tax class IV is formed automatically if both partners are unlimited taxpayers and do not live permanently apart (§ 39e para. 3 EStG). A combination of classes III and V is possible on application. The tax class controls wage tax deduction only. Social insurance contributions follow your gross pay and do not change because of it. Status October 2026.

The most important points in brief

  • Tax class IV is formed automatically after the marriage if the conditions are met (§ 39e para. 3 sentence 3 EStG).
  • The combination III/V requires an application (§ 38b para. 1 no. 5 EStG). It is submitted on the official form and signed by hand (§ 38b para. 3 sentence 3 EStG).
  • The tax class affects wage tax. Social insurance contributions are calculated from pay and stay unaffected.
  • If a spouse is covered by your family insurance, an income limit of 565 euros per month applies (status 2026, § 10 SGB V, Social Code Book V).
  • The net result can only be judged by calculating both classes, for example with the federal finance ministry’s tax calculator.

What happens automatically after the marriage?

Tax classes are recorded in the electronic wage tax deduction characteristics (ELStAM). The Federal Central Tax Office makes them available and the employer retrieves them. After a marriage, tax class IV is formed automatically if the conditions of § 38b para. 1 sentence 2 no. 4 EStG are met (§ 39e para. 3 sentence 3 EStG). You do not need to notify your employer yourself, provided your details at the registration office and the tax office are correct.

Your employer calculates the wage tax using the new characteristics from the point the change takes effect. When exactly the new characteristics apply depends on the retrieval. If you need to know the date, clarify it with your employer or the tax office.

Which tax class suits you?

The table shows the classes that matter for married couples. The effect on net pay varies strongly with income, so it gives the logic rather than euro amounts.

ClassWhoWhat it means
IVMarried couples, both unlimited taxpayers and not living permanently apart (§ 38b para. 1 no. 4 EStG)The standard after marriage, formed automatically. With very different incomes, an assessment can make sense.
IIIMarried person whose partner is in class V (§ 38b para. 1 no. 3 EStG)Only with an application for the combination. Usually it is the partner with the higher income.
VPartner whose spouse is placed in class III on application (§ 38b para. 1 no. 5 EStG)More wage tax in the monthly deduction. The balance comes through the assessment (§ 46 para. 2 no. 3a EStG).
VISecond simultaneous employment (§ 38b para. 1 no. 6 EStG)Applies to the second and further wage payments, not to the marriage itself.

The overview makes clear that the choice between IV and III/V should not be made by feel. With III/V, wage tax in the monthly deduction shifts between the partners. The total over the year is settled only in the assessment, where one takes place.

How does this affect take-home pay?

Take-home pay changes mainly through wage tax. Social insurance contributions depend on gross pay and stay the same with another tax class. That is why a change of class is measurable only in wage tax, not in social insurance.

  1. Add up the gross incomes of both partners for the current year.
  2. Calculate the combination IV/IV and the combination III/V with the federal tax calculator.
  3. Keep the social insurance contributions equal in both cases and compare only the wage tax differences.
  4. Use the difference between the two net results as a guideline and keep the year-end assessment in mind.

An example with euro amounts would require its own wage tax calculation. We leave that to the tax calculator so that the result fits your situation. It is available at bmf-steuerrechner.de.

Family insurance: what marriage means for health insurance

After marriage, the question often arises whether a spouse can be covered by the other partner’s statutory health insurance. An income limit applies. Total income may not exceed 565 euros per month in 2026 (§ 10 SGB V, Social Code Book V). A special rule for mini-jobs applies up to the marginal employment limit of 603 euros per month (status 2026). The limit applies equally to spouses and children. For 2027 the government draft names 590 euros per month, but this value is not yet law.

The limit therefore also affects a partner who was not working before. If you have your own income after the marriage, check before changing contracts whether family insurance still applies. More is in our guide on family insurance through a spouse during studies (in German).

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose my tax class freely after marriage?

Not entirely. Class IV is formed automatically. Another combination such as III/V requires an application on the official form. A less favourable class can also be formed on application (§ 38b para. 3 EStG).

Do I have to file a tax return after marriage?

That depends on your situation. Spouses assessed jointly may need to file a joint return, depending on their income. The duty follows from § 25 para. 3 EStG and the assessment rules in § 46 EStG.

Does my net pay change immediately after the marriage?

That depends on when the characteristics are transmitted. Ask the tax office and your employer when a change takes effect for you. The payslip then shows which tax class was applied.

Do I automatically lose family insurance?

Not automatically. What matters is your spouse’s total income compared with the limits above. If it exceeds them, family insurance usually ends and the partner has to insure independently. Your health insurer checks the details.

What to do now

  1. Check whether both partners are unlimited taxpayers and do not live permanently apart.
  2. Check tax class IV on the payslip, since it is formed automatically.
  3. Compare the combinations IV/IV and III/V for your income with the tax calculator.
  4. If you apply for III/V, complete and sign the official form.
  5. Check family insurance and the income limits with your health insurer.
