Studying in Germany from Jordan starts with proof of funds and ends with an appointment in Amman. This guide explains what the German Embassy in Amman asks for in its study visa information (Merkblatt, status September 2026), covering financial proof, health insurance, language levels and how the application works.
Short answer: Students from Jordan must show at least 992 euros per month, or 11,904 euros for the first study year, according to the German Embassy in Amman (status September 2026). Accepted are an official blocked account confirmation, a sponsor’s commitment from a person living in Germany or a scholarship. Travel health insurance for at least three months must be shown at the appointment. The visa fee is 75 euros, paid in cash in Jordanian dinar.
The most important points
- Financial proof: 992 euros per month, or 11,904 euros for the first year (status September 2026).
- Accepted proof: an official blocked account confirmation, a sponsor’s commitment from a person living in Germany, or a scholarship.
- Health: travel insurance for at least three months, shown at the appointment. German statutory insurance starts only after you take up residence and enrol.
- Language: German at B2 for a course without a preparatory course, or B1 with one. English at B2 only for programmes taught entirely in English.
- Application: online through the German consular portal, then an appointment within 90 days of the booking link.
Which financial proof does the Embassy in Amman accept?
The Embassy lists three options. Each has its own conditions, so check which one fits your situation before you open an account or ask for a commitment.
- Blocked account: an official confirmation showing the amount paid in and the amount available each month.
- Sponsor’s commitment: signed by a person living in Germany, lasting at least one year, marked as proven and submitted to the competent foreigners’ authority in Germany.
- Scholarship: confirmation of the amount and the duration.
| Case | Monthly amount | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Study | 992 euros | 11,904 euros for the first year |
| Study place search (section 17 (2) of the Residence Act) | 1,092 euros | 6,552 euros for six months; the visa lasts up to nine months |
Assumption: you start in October 2026 and need twelve months of funding, so the total is 11,904 euros. The 992 euro figure is the Embassy’s minimum for the study case, status September 2026.
Which health insurance do you need for the visa?
The Merkblatt requires travel health insurance for at least three months from the start of your journey, and you must bring it to the appointment. The Embassy warns that some travel policies exclude long stays, including incoming insurance, so read the exclusions carefully. German statutory student insurance begins only after you take up residence and enrol. If you arrive earlier, you need private cover until then. The costs of statutory cover are shown below.
| Situation | Monthly contribution, 2026 | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Under 23 or with a child | 142.96 euros | Assumption: average additional contribution of 2.9 percent and a student who does not live with parents (base 855 euros). Source: GKV-Spitzenverband, figures for 2026. |
| From age 23, without a child | 148.09 euros | Adds the childless nursing care surcharge (4.2 percent in total instead of 3.6 percent). |
Whether private or statutory cover fits your plans depends on your situation. Our overview of public or private health insurance for international students sets out both options.
Which language level do you need?
- German: B2 for courses taught in German without a preparatory course, or B1 if you take a preparatory course first. Accepted tests are telc, ÖSD, Goethe-Institut and TestDaF.
- English: B2 with IELTS or TOEFL, only if the whole programme is taught in English.
The Merkblatt does not state minimum scores for DSH or TestDaF, and it does not mention an APS certificate. Confirm both with your university and the Embassy before you book.
How do you apply in Amman?
The Merkblatt describes these steps for study visas. Documents from Syria, Yemen and Iraq need a prior certification by the foreign ministry.
- Apply online through the German consular portal (digital.diplo.de/visa) in the category Study and study place search.
- Upload legible files that are not upside down. Each file may be at most 1 MB.
- After the pre-check you receive a link to book your appointment. The appointment must take place within 90 days of the link.
- At the appointment, bring your originals, a current biometric photo, your payment confirmation and certificates with apostille or legalisation where needed. Pay 75 euros in cash in Jordanian dinar.
- Plan about four to six weeks for processing. The Embassy does not answer status requests during this time.
Your passport must be valid, signed and have at least two blank pages. For the usual 12-month visa, the Embassy expects at least 15 months of validity at the start of travel.
Frequently asked questions
Is a blocked account always required?
No. The Embassy lists three options: a blocked account, a sponsor’s commitment from a person living in Germany, or a scholarship. Choose the one you can document cleanly, because each has its own conditions.
What if I only want to search for a study place?
The Embassy gives a separate amount for this case: 1,092 euros per month, and at least 6,552 euros for six months under section 17 (2) of the Residence Act. A visa of this kind lasts up to nine months.
Can travel insurance cover my whole stay?
Not usually. The Merkblatt asks for travel insurance of at least three months at the appointment, and it works as a bridge until enrolment. Long stays may be excluded from travel policies, and German statutory insurance follows enrolment.
Do I need a German certificate for an English-taught course?
Not necessarily. For programmes taught entirely in English, the Embassy expects English at B2, shown with IELTS or TOEFL. A German certificate matters only if the course is taught in German.
