Studying in Germany from Iran requires a national study visa, proof of funds in a blocked account (Sperrkonto) and travel health insurance for your first entry. The German mission in Tehran publishes a detailed study guide with its own document list, which this guide follows, and explains what each item means in practice.
Short answer: Applicants from Iran need a blocked account with 11,904 euros for the first study year, released at 992 euros per month. Travel health insurance must cover at least 90 days and a minimum of 30,000 euros. The visa fee is 75 euros, payable in cash in euros according to the mission. Figures: German mission in Tehran, study guide marked as current for 2026.

How do you prepare translated and pre-certified documents?
The Tehran list asks for previous educational certificates with grade transcripts, translated and pre-certified. In practice, this means you should first ask which translators and certification offices the mission accepts. Get the translations done before you book the appointment, so that missing papers do not delay your application. Keep the originals, the translations and the certification stamps together in one folder.
- Collect your school and university certificates and all transcripts.
- Ask the mission which translators and certifications it accepts.
- Order the translations and the pre-certification, and check each stamp for completeness.
- Add the CV and the motivation letter, and check that the dates match your certificates.
What does the blocked account look like in numbers?
The blocked account must cover the first study year. The monthly figure is the amount you can withdraw once you are in Germany. The Tehran page gives these figures for 2026, and the DAAD gives the same monthly figure as of 1 January 2025.
| Item | Amount | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Blocked account for the first year | 11,904 euros | Tehran mission, 2026; DAAD, 1 January 2025 |
| Monthly release | 992 euros | Tehran mission, 2026; DAAD, 1 January 2025 |
| Share released per month | One twelfth of the total | Tehran mission, 2026 |
Example (assumption): You begin your studies in October 2026 and deposit 11,904 euros. From the first month, the bank releases 992 euros each month, so the account is empty after twelve months. Banks may ask for extra documents before they open the account, so start the process early.
How does health insurance work for the first entry?
The Tehran page requires travel health insurance for your first entry into Germany. The policy must be valid for at least 90 days from your travel date, cover the whole Schengen area, and reach a minimum of 30,000 euros. This is the cover the visa file needs. Once you enrol at a German university, German statutory or private insurance starts.
The DAAD explains that students can keep home coverage only where Germany has a social insurance agreement with the home country, and that cover must meet German standards. The reduced student rate applies to students under 30. Exemption from statutory insurance is possible only in specific cases, must be requested within three months and cannot be withdrawn (section 8 SGB V).
For a rough budget, the statutory student contribution is calculated on 855 euros per month for students who do not live with their parents. The health insurance part is 87.38 euros per month in 2026, before the additional contribution of your insurer. Source: GKV-Spitzenverband, Rechengrößen 2026 (Stand 1.1.2026).
How does the visa application appointment work?
The Tehran page asks you to bring the documents to your appointment, which suggests an in-person submission. It does not state the processing time. Book your appointment as early as the mission allows, and bring the signed VIDEX printout, the photos and all copies in the order of the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to bring a printed VIDEX form?
Yes. The Tehran checklist asks for a signed printout of the VIDEX application. Fill in the online form, print it, sign it and bring it with you. Keep a copy for your records.
How old can my language certificate be?
The Tehran page says the certificate must be no more than one year old at the appointment. Book your language test with the appointment date in mind, so the certificate is still valid on that day.
How is the visa fee paid?
The mission page states a fee of 75 euros, payable in cash in euros. Check the current payment rules before you travel, because payment methods can change.
Do I need travel insurance if I already have home insurance?
The visa file requires travel health insurance with the minimum cover stated by the mission, even if you have insurance at home. Ask your insurer whether the policy meets the Schengen standard and the 30,000 euro minimum in writing.
