Indonesian applicants apply through the German embassy in Jakarta. Here you find the 992 euro blocked account, language rules, incoming insurance and processing times.

Contents

Studying in Germany from Indonesia requires a German student visa, proof of funds and health insurance that the visa office accepts. Indonesian applicants apply through the German embassy in Jakarta. Its information sheet on studies without unconditional admission, dated November 2024, sets the blocked account at 992 euros net per month.

Short answer: Indonesian applicants without unconditional admission must show a blocked account of at least 992 euros net per month, or 1,027 euros per month if no admission exists yet, according to the Jakarta sheet dated November 2024. Health insurance must be presented during the visa procedure, and processing can take up to twelve weeks. Check the current sheet before you apply.

The most important points

  • The blocked account (Sperrkonto) is at least 992 euros net per month. For a full year, that is 11,904 euros (assumption: 12 months).
  • Without any admission yet, for example for an aptitude test, the sheet asks for at least 1,027 euros net per month.
  • Alternatives are a commitment letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) or a public scholarship of at least 992 euros net per month.
  • The Studienkolleg requires language skills at level B1, and some courses require B2.
  • Incoming health insurance must be presented before the visa procedure is concluded. The sheet names no minimum cover.
  • Processing takes up to twelve weeks, and the visa fee is 75 euros.

How much money do you need in a blocked account?

The Jakarta sheet asks for a blocked account with at least 992 euros net per month. It also requires proof of the first year’s tuition fees, unless the fees are public semester contributions. The sheet gives monthly amounts only, so the yearly figures in the table below are calculated by us. You can read more about organising your finances before you move in general.

Case in the Jakarta sheetMonthly amountYearly amount (assumption)
Applicants without unconditional admission (sheet title)992 euros net11,904 euros
No admission yet, for example an aptitude test1,027 euros net12,324 euros
Commitment letter or public scholarship as alternativeAt least 992 euros net11,904 euros

Assumption: The yearly figures are twelve times the monthly amount. If you already hold an unconditional admission, the sheet we checked does not cover your case, so ask the mission which sheet applies to you.

Which health insurance do you need for the visa?

The Jakarta sheet says that an incoming health insurance must be presented before the visa procedure is concluded. It does not state a minimum cover or a term. The sheet also asks applicants not to send inquiries about the insurance coverage to the mission. Choose a policy that clearly covers the period you need and keep the certificate ready.

After enrolment, statutory student insurance (KVdS) applies to students under 30. The 2026 contribution figures are based on an assessment base of 855 euros per month. Our guide on health insurance for international students explains how the systems fit together.

Which language and admission proof do you need?

  • For the Studienkolleg, the sheet requires language skills at least at level B1, and for some courses B2.
  • Accepted tests include Goethe-Institut, ÖSD, ECL (from A2), TestDaF, telc and DSH, as well as the German Abitur.
  • Holders of a Diploma III need language skills at level B1 or higher, not older than twelve months at the time of application.
  • International programmes taught in English can accept TOEFL or IELTS instead.
  • Certificates must be presented in the original. Indonesian documents need an apostille and a translation before you apply.

What do you need to prepare before you apply?

  • Apostilled and translated Indonesian documents. Documents in languages other than German or English need a recognised German translation.
  • If you use the commitment letter route: one original and one copy, not older than six months.
  • A complete set of documents, submitted together. The sheet states that incomplete applications have no chance of success.
  • Flight bookings are not needed before the visa is granted.

How long does the process take?

Processing can take up to twelve weeks, and the sheet asks you not to send status queries during that time. The visa fee is 75 euros, payable in cash or by card in Indonesian rupiah. Plan the application well before your start date, because a delayed visa can push back your arrival and your enrolment.

Frequently asked questions

Is 992 euros per month the same for all German missions?

Not necessarily. Each mission publishes its own sheet. The Jakarta and Beirut sheets both use 992 euros per month, but the documents and procedures differ, so always check the sheet of the mission that receives your application.

Can I use a scholarship instead of a blocked account?

Yes, the Jakarta sheet lists a public scholarship of at least 992 euros net per month as an alternative. The sheet does not list private scholarships in that way, so ask the mission whether yours is accepted.

Do I need an APS certificate?

The Jakarta sheet does not mention the APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle). Check your university’s admission requirements, because they decide what you need.

What is the minimum insurance cover?

The Jakarta sheet does not state a minimum cover or a term. Ask your insurer for a certificate that covers the period the mission requires, and check the mission’s current information before you buy a policy.

What to do next

  1. Check the current Jakarta sheet and the mission’s visa pages.
  2. Decide between a blocked account, a commitment letter and a public scholarship.
  3. Have your Indonesian documents apostilled and translated before you apply.
  4. Book incoming health insurance that you can present when the visa procedure asks for it.
