Study in Germany from Ghana: Visa, Blocked Account, Insurance

Study in Germany from Ghana: the 11,904 euro first-year proof, incoming health insurance until enrolment and the 75 euro fee in cedi at the German Embassy in Accra.

Contents

If you want to study in Germany from Ghana, you need three things in order: proof of finances for your first year, health insurance that covers the gap until enrolment, and a visa appointment in Accra. This guide sets out what the German Embassy in Accra requires, with the figures and the points where the Embassy page leaves details open.

Short answer: Students from Ghana must show 11,904 euros for the first study year, which is 992 euros per month, according to the German Embassy in Accra (page undated). A blocked account or a sponsor’s commitment from a person living in Germany is accepted. Travel cover does not replace German health insurance after enrolment. Apply online, attend the appointment in person and pay 75 euros in cedi or by card.

The most important points

  • The blocked account covers 11,904 euros for the first year, or 992 euros per month. Open it no later than when your application is ready for preview.
  • A sponsor’s commitment must be signed by a person living in Germany, marked as proven, valid for the whole stay and under six months old on your entry date.
  • Study fees need separate proof. A blocked account or sponsor’s commitment does not cover them.
  • Until enrolment, you need incoming health insurance. Travel health insurance is not enough once you are enrolled.
  • The fee is 75 euros, paid in cedi at the embassy’s exchange rate or by card.

How much money must you show in Ghana?

The Embassy’s visa information gives the same figures as the other missions in our series: 992 euros per month and 11,904 euros for the first study year. The page is undated, so confirm the figures before you open an account.

Assumption: you enter Germany in October 2026 and need the full first year covered, so the total is 11,904 euros. The bank confirmation must show the amount paid in and the amount available each month.

What health insurance do you need?

The Embassy describes two stages. From entry until enrolment, you need incoming health insurance. From enrolment, you need German statutory or private health insurance. The page states that travel health insurance is not sufficient for this. It does not give a minimum duration or minimum cover for the first stage, so ask the Embassy which cover it expects. The costs of German statutory student insurance are shown below.

Which language level and certificates do you need?

The Embassy generally expects a language level of at least B2 in the language of instruction. The requirement can be waived if your university confirms the level in its admission letter and you do not take a preparatory course. The page does not name DSH, TestDaF, IELTS or TOEFL scores. The document list also includes your WAEC BECE and WASSCE certificates, so bring the originals.

How do you apply in Accra?

  1. Apply online through the German consular portal (digital.diplo.de/visa). The Embassy checks completeness and confirms that the submission was received.
  2. Use the booking link from the Embassy to make an appointment with the visa section.
  3. At the appointment, the Embassy checks your identity and originals, holds a short interview, takes your biometric data and collects the fee.
  4. Pay 75 euros in cedi at the embassy’s exchange rate, or pay by credit card.
  5. Apply early. The page does not state a processing time, because the Embassy must consult German authorities.

Your passport must be valid for at least six more months and have two free pages. Other documents include your birth certificate, WAEC certificates, a CV, a signed motivation letter, your admission letter, proof of your language level, proof of finances and your health insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sponsor’s commitment enough?

Yes, if it meets the conditions on the page. It must be signed by a person living in Germany, marked as proven, valid for the whole stay and less than six months old on the day you enter Germany. It does not cover study fees, which you prove separately.

Do I need proof for the study fees?

Yes. The page states that a blocked account or a sponsor’s commitment does not cover study fees, so you need separate proof of payment or of the fee.

I am from Sierra Leone or Liberia. Where do I apply?

Choose Ghana as your place of residence in the online portal. The page gives this instruction for applicants from both countries.

How long does processing take?

The page does not state a processing time. It advises applying early, because the Embassy must consult German authorities. Status requests are not answered during the first four weeks.

Your next steps

  1. Open a blocked account or obtain a sponsor’s commitment, and keep the bank confirmation.
  2. Arrange incoming health insurance for the period before enrolment, and plan German cover from enrolment.
  3. Collect your WAEC certificates, CV, motivation letter, admission letter and language proof.
  4. Apply online, book your appointment and bring 75 euros in cedi or a credit card.
  5. Apply early, and wait at least four weeks before asking about the status.
