Study abroad in Mongolia: the European Health Insurance Card does not apply there, so you need separate travel health and repatriation insurance. You do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days, but longer stays do require one, which you apply for at a Mongolian diplomatic mission. How are you health insured in Mongolia?

European Health Insurance Card and social security agreements

According to the FAQ of the European Commission, the European Health Insurance Card applies in the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Mongolia is not part of this area, and the page makes no explicit statement about travel outside this area. The card on the back of your German health insurance card therefore does not help you in Ulaanbaatar.

We have not found a social security agreement with Mongolia that covers health insurance, so we do not name one. Ask your statutory health insurer to confirm in writing which benefits it covers during the semester abroad, before you sign the Learning Agreement. Such a confirmation does not replace insurance abroad, because outside the European Union and the European Economic Area the German system does not apply automatically.

If you are privately insured, you will find the basics in the guide Health insurance during a semester abroad (in German), and the specifics for non-EU countries in the guide Private health insurance for students in non-EU countries (in German).

Health care and vaccinations

The Federal Foreign Office states that no vaccinations are mandatory for direct entry from Germany. The page names the standard vaccinations of the STIKO vaccination schedule, especially against measles, and hepatitis A as a travel vaccination. Rabies is endemic in Mongolia, so the vaccination series should be completed before departure. For long stays or special exposure it also names hepatitis B, typhoid, meningitis A, C, W and Y, and tick-borne encephalitis. We have not verified whether your host university requires its own insurance. Ask the International Office.

Private travel health insurance and repatriation

The Federal Foreign Office advises taking out travel health and repatriation insurance for the entire length of your stay abroad. We have not verified whether your statutory health insurer covers repatriation from Mongolia, so ask your insurer about its scope and whether you need separate repatriation cover. More background is in the guide Travel health insurance for Erasmus, USA and work and travel (in German).

Do you need a visa for Mongolia?

Not for stays up to 30 days, but yes for longer stays. The Federal Foreign Office states that a short visit or business trip of up to 30 days requires no visa. For a longer stay a visa is required, which you can apply for at any Mongolian diplomatic mission. Whether and which visa you need for a degree or study programme is determined by the diplomatic mission. We do not state a rule on study because we have not found an official statement on it.

According to the Federal Foreign Office, a passport, a provisional passport and a children’s passport are accepted. An identity card or a provisional identity card is not sufficient. All travel documents must still be valid for at least six months on arrival. The page also notes that transit passengers passing through Chinggis Khaan airport remain visa-free for up to 30 days. Keep the following documents ready:

  • Passport that is still valid for six months on arrival
  • Visa from a Mongolian diplomatic mission for stays longer than 30 days
  • Registration by your hotel or private host within 48 hours of check-in
  • Proof of travel health and repatriation insurance for the full length of your stay

According to the Federal Foreign Office, there is no travel warning for Mongolia (page status 22.10.2026). The page contains no partial travel warning for the country itself. For border crossings it refers to the partial travel warning for the Russian Federation. It describes the security situation across the country as stable. In the capital Ulaanbaatar, petty crime such as pickpocketing, robbery and fraud schemes must be expected. The page also reports current restrictions on the supply of fuel.

What does a semester abroad in Mongolia cost?

Tuition fees

Which fees apply at the host university depends on the exchange agreement of your home university. We do not name a general amount, because we have not found an official statement on it. Ask your home university and the host university before you accept a place.

Living costs

The DAAD sets a monthly scholarship rate of 800 euros for students in Mongolia. This is a guide figure, not a budget. The DAAD list carries no publication date; we retrieved it on 25.10.2026. We have not found a verified monthly amount for living costs from your host university or an official body. Ask the host university for its budget for exchange students.

Funding: Erasmus+ and study grant abroad (Auslands-BAföG)

Funding through Erasmus+ requires a partnership of your university with an institution in a programme country. The European Commission publishes the list of programme countries. Check with your International Office whether a partnership exists for Mongolia. More on this is in the guide Planning Erasmus and a semester abroad (in German).

The study grant abroad (Auslands-BAföG) is possible for part of a degree abroad if you have studied at least one academic year in Germany beforehand and have a permanent residence in Germany. According to the leaflet of the German Student Services Organisation (DSW, status January 2026), the Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim is responsible for the Asia group of countries. The leaflet does not name Mongolia, so confirm responsibility with the office before you apply. The application should be submitted about six months before the start of the stay. The leaflet names tuition fees of up to 5,600 euros for one year at most. The regulation provides a travel cost supplement of 500 euros for each outbound and return trip outside Europe. All details are in the guide Study grant abroad: requirements, amount and supplements (in German).

Calculation example: For a stay of five months, the DAAD rate of 800 euros per month gives a guide figure of 4,000 euros for living expenses. Flights, the visa, insurance and your university fees are not included, because we have no verified amounts for them. The total is an orientation, not a promise.

How to prepare before you leave

  1. Ask your health insurer to confirm in writing how you are insured during the semester abroad.
  2. Take out travel health and repatriation insurance for the full length of your stay and check whether repatriation is included.
  3. Apply at a Mongolian diplomatic mission for a visa if your stay lasts longer than 30 days.
  4. Check that your travel documents will still be valid for at least six months on arrival.
  5. Ask your doctor about hepatitis A, rabies and the standard vaccinations named by the Federal Foreign Office, and complete the rabies series in time.
  6. Submit the study grant abroad application about six months before the start and confirm responsibility with the Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim, if you want funding.
  7. Ask the International Office about partnerships, host university fees and the budget for exchange students.
