Roboflow for students offers, according to the provider, a research access for people with an academic email address. It includes 50 credits per month and runs for two years, but it requires all projects to be public. This guide explains what that means for theses, seminars and learning projects.
Short answer: Roboflow gives students and researchers with an academic email address a research access with 50 credits per month for two years. All projects must be public on Roboflow Universe, and according to the provider the data may be used for licensing and model training. Standard prices for other plans are on the provider’s pricing page. The provider publishes no country list, but workspaces with an EU region are excluded according to the provider. The essentials at a glance
- Research access is aimed at people with an academic email address who do not work commercially.
- It includes 50 credits per month. Once the allowance is used up, usage stops. The provider does not charge extra for usage beyond it.
- According to the provider, access runs for two years and includes all core features except private projects.
- All projects in the research workspace must be public. The data may be used for licensing and model training.
- Applications are only possible from the free plan. According to the provider, the option does not appear in workspaces with an EU region.
What the research access includes
Roboflow is a platform for computer vision. There you manage image datasets, annotate them, train models and test them. For theses on image classification or object detection, that is the practical benefit.
According to the provider, the access includes all core features apart from private projects. The 50 credits per month are the allowance you should keep an eye on. Once it is used up, usage stops until the next monthly cycle, without any extra charges.
The catch: public projects
The condition that all projects on Roboflow Universe are public is the decisive point. Your images, annotations and models are then visible to others, and according to the terms the provider may use the data for licensing and model training.
For theses with sensitive data, interview material, images with identifiable people or unpublished research data, the access is therefore unsuitable. The guide Data protection for AI tools in studies covers the basics of handling data with AI tools.

How to activate the offer

- In Roboflow, open “Plan & Billing Settings” and find the section “Using Roboflow for research or education?”.
- Click “Request Access”, sign in with your academic email address and confirm non-commercial use.
- Click “Apply for Research Access” and wait for activation.
Does the offer apply in Germany?
The provider’s site names no country restriction and no deadline. However, according to the provider, workspaces with an EU region are excluded because public projects are not enabled there. If you want to keep your data deliberately within the EU, you cannot use the research access for that workspace.
Does the research access suit my work?
The access suits learning projects, seminar papers with public image data and demonstration models that you want to publish anyway. It does not suit projects whose data must stay confidential, such as images from cooperations with companies or patient data.
Public datasets come with their own licences. Before you upload, check whether you may share the images on a public platform at all, and name the source in your work.
Frequently asked questions
Is Roboflow free for students?
The provider sets out the conditions for the research access on its application page. Standard prices for the other plans are on the pricing page. The access is tied to an academic email address and to public projects, not to a price.
Can I use Roboflow in my thesis?
Your university’s examination regulations and your supervisor decide this. Document which tools you used if the thesis requires it, and record which images you used.
What happens if my projects are private?
The application is only possible when all projects are public. You can make private projects public or remove them. Until you have done so, the workspace remains blocked according to the provider.
Can I delete data after uploading it?
Whether and how published data may still be used after deletion is set out by the provider in its terms. Read those terms before you upload images, and then decide what you actually share.
What happens after two years?
According to the provider, the access is limited to two years. Plan your projects so that you secure models and results in good time. Whether another access is possible afterwards is shown on the pricing page.
Are there alternatives for private data?
Yes. For private image data, open-source libraries are suitable, as long as they run on your own computer or with your university IT. You then take on the setup and maintenance. For how to get compute time for training, see GPU compute for students.
What to do next
- Clarify whether your images may be shared publicly.
- Check your workspace for the free plan, project count and visibility.
- Submit the application with your academic email address.
- Plan your credits so they last the month, and back up your results in good time.
What happens after your studies?
When your studies end, the academic entitlement lapses once your university address is no longer valid. The provider decides what happens to the workspace and projects after that. Secure models, datasets and evaluations locally before your status changes. Help on accounts after you leave university is covered in University email after you leave.
