A doctorate in psychology (German: Promotion in der Psychologie) leads to the title Dr. rer. nat. or Dr. phil., depending on the faculty. The doctoral regulations (Promotionsordnung) decide which title is awarded. Whether you hold a post, a scholarship or have no fixed funding determines your insurance and timetable most of all.
Short answer: A qualification post may be fixed-term for up to six years under Section 2 WissZeitVG. With an employment contract, your employer pays part of the social insurance. With a scholarship you usually pay your health insurance yourself. The minimum contribution to voluntary statutory health insurance was 222.80 euros per month in 2026. Last updated: October 2026.
The most important points
- Depending on the faculty, the title is Dr. rer. nat. or Dr. phil. The doctoral regulations decide.
- A doctorate does not replace the licence to practise as a psychotherapist (Approbation). The two are separate.
- A post with an employment contract brings social insurance contributions, part of which your employer pays.
- A scholarship is not an employment contract. The minimum contribution to voluntary statutory health insurance was 222.80 euros per month in 2026.
- A qualification post may be fixed-term for up to six years under Section 2 WissZeitVG.
How long does a doctorate in psychology take?
The law sets no fixed duration. The doctoral regulations set the requirements. In empirical work, data collection and analysis often set the timetable; in theoretical work, the literature stage does. For posts, the statutory frame applies: under Section 2 (1) of the WissZeitVG (Act on Fixed-Term Contracts in Academia), a fixed term for your own qualification may last up to six years.
| Funding route | Frame for duration | Governing rule |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification post at a chair or in a project | Fixed term of up to six years | Section 2 (1) WissZeitVG |
| Doctoral scholarship | Period stated in the award | Award letter |
| Doctorate without post or scholarship | No statutory limit | Doctoral regulations of the faculty |
Dr. rer. nat. or Dr. phil.: which title?
Depending on the faculty, psychology doctorates are awarded as Doctor of Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.). In daily life the difference is usually small. For your CV and applications, it is still worth using the title exactly as it appears on your certificate.
Psychotherapy and the doctorate: two separate routes
If you want to work as a psychotherapist later, you need a licence (Approbation) under the Psychotherapy Act (Psychotherapeutengesetz). A doctorate does not replace that licence. Check with the relevant chamber and your training institute whether and how the doctorate fits your training.
What does a post pay? Worked example with grade E 13
Assumption: a half post in pay grade E 13, step 3, which means 2,683.45 euros gross per month. According to the published TV-L table (as of October 2026), step 3 is 5,366.89 euros per month for a full post. The amounts below cover only health and long-term care insurance. Income tax, pension and unemployment insurance are not included.
- Health insurance: 8.75 percent employee share, which is 234.80 euros.
- Long-term care insurance: 1.8 percent, which is 48.30 euros. If you are childless and 23 or older, it is 2.4 percent, or 64.40 euros.
The insurance threshold for employees was 6,450 euros per month in 2026. This half post is well below it. For net pay, use the calculator of the German Federal Ministry of Finance at bmf-steuerrechner.de.
Scholarship with family allowance: the comparison
Assumption: basic scholarship of 1,750 euros, research costs allowance of 100 euros and family allowance of 155 euros per month. The total is 2,005 euros. For voluntary statutory health insurance at the minimum contribution of 222.80 euros and long-term care insurance without the childless surcharge of 47.46 euros, you pay 270.26 euros per month. That is about 13.5 percent of the amount. The family allowance raises the payment, not your insurance costs.
Post or scholarship: what suits your subject?
- Post: you are tied to a chair or project, with tasks set out in the contract.
- Post: the term depends on the contract. Extensions follow the law and the contract terms.
- Scholarship: you plan your research more freely, but arrange your insurance and provision yourself.
- Scholarship: applications and selection run through the funding body, with deadlines and documents.
Frequently asked questions
Can a scholarship give me employer-based insurance?
A scholarship alone does not create an employment relationship. Health insurance then runs through voluntary insurance or family insurance under Section 10 SGB V.
Does the fixed term get longer if I have children?
Yes. Under Section 2 (1) sentence 4 WissZeitVG, the total duration is extended by two years for each child under 18 in your care. Have the extension confirmed in writing in your contract.
Does the share of a post matter for insurance?
Yes. The share of a post sets your pay and social insurance contributions. A part-time post lowers the total, while a full-time post can reach the insurance threshold. Calculate both before you agree.
Do I have to tell my health insurer about the doctorate?
Report your post or scholarship to your health insurer once it is clear which cover applies. If your income or status changes, report that promptly as well. This helps you avoid back payments.
What to do next
- Check the doctoral regulations for the title awarded and the requirements.
- Compare post and scholarship, each with its term, payment and insurance.
- Calculate the share of a post and the pay together with the social insurance contributions.
- Clarify the insurance with your health insurer before the contract begins.
