Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) during a social work degree concerns a field in which mental and physical strain lie closely together. This guide explains how insurers classify social workers and social educators, which questions the application will put to you and how to estimate the costs roughly. It is based on the law and on the usual logic of policy terms.
Short answer: Occupational disability insurance pays out if you are likely to be permanently unable to work in your last practised occupation because of illness, bodily injury or an age-atypical decline in strength (Section 172 (2) VVG, German Insurance Contract Act, as of October 2026). For students of social work, the decisive question is whether the policy refers to the degree course, the start of your career or the later field of work. Premiums depend on age, health and tariff.
The Key Points at a Glance
- Social work covers very different fields: youth welfare, addiction support, school social work, administration and management.
- Mental strain is particularly relevant in this field, which is why insurers ask detailed questions on the application.
- Many roles combine counselling, documentation and crisis work, which makes the referral harder to assess.
- A referral clause (Verweisungsklausel) that points to other activities can become a point of dispute for social workers.
- Details of therapies and diagnoses must be complete (Section 19 VVG).
- Premiums can only be compared using concrete offers and terms.
Which Occupation Counts for Disability Insurance in Social Work?
As long as you are studying, there is usually no occupation practised yet. Insurers therefore fall back on your training or on the occupation description in the policy. Someone who later works in youth welfare performs a different activity from a social worker in administration or in addiction counselling. Make sure the policy explicitly names the field you are aiming for.
Many graduates change field in their first years of work. This matters for disability insurance, because the occupation practised last counts, not the first one. Ask for the occupation definition to be explained from the terms before you sign, and ask how a change within the field is treated.
What Does Disability Insurance Cost During a Social Work Degree?
The premium is determined by your entry age, state of health, occupational group, desired pension and term. There is no reliable figure that applies to all tariffs. A calculation nevertheless shows you the total sum you would have to expect.
- Set the premium of a specific offer as a monthly amount.
- Multiply it by the number of months until the policy ends.
- Add foreseeable increases, provided the tariff includes them.
Assumption: monthly premium of 45 euros, start at age 23, end at age 67. That is 44 years, so 528 months. 528 times 45 euros comes to 23,760 euros. The sum contains no increases and serves only as a guide.
Which Health Questions Do Insurers Ask?
The application covers diagnoses, treatments and medication from recent years. Especially in the psychosocial field, insurers ask more closely, because therapies and crises occur more often in this line of work. The overview shows the typical topics.
| Area | Typical questions | What to watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Mental health | Depression, anxiety disorder, psychotherapy | State past treatments as well if you are asked about them |
| Sleep and stress | Sleep disorders, exhaustion, burnout diagnoses | Name medical diagnoses precisely, not self-assessments |
| Musculoskeletal system | Back, shoulder, tendons | Give recurring complaints in full |
| Medication | Antidepressants, sleeping pills, long-term preparations | Take over preparations and dosages from your medication plan |
Your details must be complete and accurate. Under Section 19 (1) VVG you must disclose material circumstances that the insurer has asked about in text form. Under Section 19 (3) VVG, withdrawal requires that the breach was intentional or grossly negligent. If you are unsure, ask the practice that treated you.
How Does the Referral Work in Social Professions?
Under Section 172 (3) VVG the insurer may contractually require that you also do not perform any other activity that corresponds to your training, abilities and previous social standing. Social workers often take on activities with a lower burden, for example in administration, specialist counselling or teaching. Whether the insurer may refer you to them depends on the contract. A clause limited to the activity actually practised protects you differently from a broad referral. Our guide on abstract referral clauses explains the background.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to disclose my psychological history?
Yes, if the application asks about it. Information on therapies is not voluntary; it belongs in the application. If you conceal material circumstances, the insurer may withdraw under the conditions of Section 19 VVG. Honest answers do not automatically lead to rejection, but they can result in surcharges or exclusions.
Is it worth taking out disability insurance during the bachelor’s degree?
Often yes, because an early application can bring advantages. There is no obligation. What matters is that you can afford the premium beyond your studies, in case your income develops differently.
Is there statutory protection in case of mental strain?
The statutory pension for reduced earning capacity under Section 43 of the German Social Code, Book VI (SGB VI) is tied to strict conditions. According to the wording, among other things, three years of compulsory contributions in the last five years are required. The pension also depends on whether you can no longer work at least six hours a day for partial reduced earning capacity, or at least three hours a day for full reduced earning capacity. For students it is therefore no substitute for your own cover.
How do I find out the right classification?
Ask the insurer in writing how it classifies your occupation. Have the occupational group named and compare it with your career goal. For questions about individual tariffs, personal advice is useful, because the terms differ considerably.
What to Do Now
- Decide whether you want to work in youth welfare, counselling, administration or management.
- Compile the diagnoses and therapies of recent years with dates.
- Compare the occupation definitions and referral clauses, not just the premium.
- Put your open questions to the insurer before you submit the application. A personal assessment is possible via how Academycon works (in German).
