Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) during a nursing science degree has one peculiarity: many students work as qualified nurses (Pflegefachkraft) alongside their studies, or worked in the profession before. This guide shows how that counts when insurers classify you, which health questions appear on the application and how to estimate the costs roughly. The statements are based on the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG) and on social security law.
Short answer: Occupational disability insurance pays out if you are likely to be permanently unable to work in your last practised occupation because of illness or bodily injury (Section 172 (2) VVG, as of October 2026). If you work as a qualified nurse alongside your studies, this activity usually counts. Premiums depend on age, health, occupation and tariff and cannot be stated as a flat figure.
The Key Points at a Glance
- If you work as a nurse alongside your studies, you already have a practised occupation that counts for the assessment.
- Physically demanding tasks such as lifting and shift work are a topic on the application, even in your early years.
- Nursing careers offer moves into management, teaching and quality assurance, which play a role in the referral.
- Back, skin and airways are among the typical health questions in this field.
- You must disclose pre-existing conditions in full (Section 19 VVG).
- A comparison based on the policy terms is more meaningful than a comparison based on the premium alone.
Does the Nursing Occupation Already Count During Your Studies?
Often, yes. A nursing science degree is frequently completed alongside work, or students have finished a training beforehand. Anyone who works in a clinic, in outpatient care or in a care facility is already practising an occupation. Disability insurance then protects that occupation, not only the course of study. This affects the health questions, because everyday strain already plays a role now.
If you want to move into management, teaching or research after your degree, you should bear this in mind too. Insurers use the occupation practised last as the benchmark. Ask whether a move into a less demanding field affects the benefit.
What Does Disability Insurance Cost During a Nursing Degree?
Premiums depend on your entry age, state of health, occupational classification, desired pension and term. There is no fixed figure that applies to all tariffs. A worked example gives you an idea of the total sum.
- Determine the monthly premium of a specific offer, based on your details about your occupation.
- Calculate the premium months up to the agreed end.
- Take premium adjustments into account if the tariff provides for them.
Assumption: monthly premium of 75 euros, start at age 22, term until age 67. That is 45 years, so 540 premium months. 540 times 75 euros comes to 40,500 euros. This calculation is an example and not a statement about any tariff.
Which Health Questions Are Typical in Nursing?
On the application insurers ask about illnesses and treatments in recent years. For nursing staff, complaints of the back, skin or airways often come to the fore, because working conditions and hygiene requirements put a strain on the body. The table sorts the areas.
| Area | Typical questions | What to watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Spine | Slipped disc, recurring back pain | State treatments with date and outcome |
| Skin | Hand eczema, contact allergies | Also state mild, recurring complaints |
| Airways | Asthma, allergies | List medication and treatments in full |
| Mental health | Exhaustion, sleep disorders | Take over medical diagnoses, not your own assessments |
Under Section 19 (1) VVG you must disclose material circumstances that you have been asked about. Withdrawal requires an intentional or grossly negligent breach (Section 19 (3) VVG). Nevertheless the rule is: disclose fully, and clarify with your practice anything you are not sure about.
Which Referral Applies to Nursing Occupations?
Under Section 172 (3) VVG the insurer may contractually require that you also do not perform any other activity that corresponds to your training, abilities and previous social standing. A qualified nurse with a completed degree can, for example, work in teaching, quality management or nursing advice. Whether the insurer may consider such an activity reasonable depends on the contract. Our guide on abstract referral clauses provides an overview.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take out disability insurance as a part-time nurse?
Yes, part-time work is generally possible and is taken into account in the classification. What matters is that the policy correctly reflects your actual activity. If the policy provides for it, discuss changes to your working hours with the insurer.
Am I automatically protected by the nursing occupational group?
Not automatically. Insurers place occupations in groups that differ in premium and benefit. Check how your occupation is described in the policy, and ask if your activity changes.
Is the statutory pension for reduced earning capacity enough?
For most nursing students it is not a full substitute. According to the wording of Section 43 SGB VI (German Social Code, Book VI), among other things three years of compulsory contributions in the last five years are required. In addition, the pension only applies if your capacity to work falls below six hours a day or, for full reduction, below three hours a day.
What if I already have a medical condition?
An anonymous risk enquiry (Risikovoranfrage) can clarify in advance how an insurer would classify you. It does not replace an application, but it shows the options for surcharges or exclusions. Our guide on disability insurance with a pre-existing condition as a student explains the process.
