How does deferral work during studies?
Deferral is not automatic. It is granted on application, and the authority examines the individual case. The statute names three situations in which a particular hardship is generally assumed: a university course that has reached the third semester by the planned start of service, a vocational training that has already begun, and a training place that is legally promised or secured by contract.
The law also mentions dual study programmes that combine study with in-company training. There, the standard period of study may not exceed eight semesters, and the study must begin no later than three months after the in-company training starts. Do I have to complete the questionnaire if I want to study?

That cannot be answered in general terms. What counts is the course, your age, your goals and your funding. Some people use the time between school and university for experiences that later help with the choice of study. That is a personal judgement, not a legal rule.
