If you are looking for your first job after university in Germany, the key question is what a first salary after graduation realistically looks like. There is no single figure that applies to everyone. Degree, subject, industry, region and above all whether a collective agreement (Tarifvertrag) applies all make a difference. This guide shows you where to look and how to turn gross pay into net pay.

Short answer: There is no fixed figure for all graduates. As a reference point, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports a median gross annual income of 54,066 euros for full-time employees in 2025 (last updated April 2026). Your actual starting salary depends mainly on industry, collective agreement coverage and region. Net pay is considerably lower because social insurance contributions and wage tax are deducted.

The Most Important Points at a Glance

  • There is no uniform figure for graduates. Industry, collective agreement, region and degree determine the range.
  • A collective agreement gives the most reliable basis, because its pay scale applies to every employee it covers.
  • The 54,066 euro median gross for 2025 (Destatis, April 2026) is an orientation point, not a starting salary.
  • The statutory minimum wage (Mindestlohn) has been 13.90 euros gross per hour since 1 January 2026 (Federal Ministry of Labour). It is a floor, not a benchmark for graduates.
  • Social insurance contributions (Sozialabgaben) and wage tax (Lohnsteuer) are deducted from gross pay. You can calculate the social insurance part yourself, while wage tax should be checked with the official calculator of the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Why There Is No Single Figure

A graduate in publishing and a mechanical engineer at a supplier to the car industry rarely start at the same level. Even within one subject, offers can differ widely. The main reason is how the employer sets pay. If a collective agreement applies, the pay grade is fixed. Without one, the offer is individual and often negotiated.

The public sector shows this clearly. There, degree and starting level determine the pay, and the tables are published. The German guide on starting in the public service explains how graduates are placed.

Which Figures Give You a Useful Orientation?

Not every number online is reliable. For your own estimate, three kinds of source are worth checking. The table shows what each one can do and where its limits are.

SourceWhat it showsHow to use it
Destatis, earnings by industry and occupationAverage earnings by sector and occupation, collected officiallyCheck a rough range for your field, not a starting salary
Collective agreements and pay scalesBinding pay by pay grade and stepA firm minimum if your employer is bound by the agreement

Salary reports from comparison portals are often based on self-reported data. They can show a general trend but are not a solid basis for a precise figure. If you need a number, use official statistics or the collective agreement.

How Do You Get From Gross to Net?

Gross pay is not what reaches your bank account. In Germany, social insurance contributions follow fixed rates and contribution ceilings. Wage tax depends on your tax class, marital status and allowances. For social insurance you can calculate an example yourself. We deliberately leave out wage tax here.

Assumption: you are childless, over 23 years old, and earn 4,000 euros gross per month. The rates come from the GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet on 2026 calculation values and the statements of the Federal Ministry of Health (last updated January 2026). Unemployment insurance is not included.

InsuranceEmployee shareAmount at 4,000 euros
Health insurance (14.6 percent plus 2.9 percent average additional contribution, halved)8.75 percent350.00 euros
Pension insurance (18.6 percent, halved)9.30 percent372.00 euros
Long-term care insurance (3.6 percent, halved, plus 0.6 points childless surcharge)2.40 percent96.00 euros
Total social insurance without unemployment insurance20.45 percent818.00 euros

These amounts are below the 2026 contribution ceilings, which are 5,812.50 euros per month for health and long-term care insurance and 8,450 euros per month for pension insurance (last updated January 2026). The additional contribution is set by each health insurer. The 2.9 percent figure is the average for 2026, so your fund may charge more or less.

Wage tax depends on your tax class and allowances. A standard employee allowance (Arbeitnehmerpauschbetrag) of 1,230 euros is applied automatically without proof (section 9a of the German Income Tax Act, last updated 2026). For an exact estimate, use the official calculator of the Federal Ministry of Finance and enter your gross pay, tax class and church tax.

Which Pay Components Besides Base Salary Matter?

An offer of 3,800 euros a month can be better than one of 4,000 euros if the employer pays more extras. Compare the annual total, not only the monthly figure.

  • Christmas bonus or a 13th monthly salary, which changes the annual total considerably.
  • Holiday days above the statutory minimum and rules on overtime.
  • Employer contribution to occupational pension schemes or to private health insurance, if you qualify.
  • Public transport tickets, training budgets or home office rules.

Whether a benefit is worth it depends on your situation. Understanding a payslip helps you assign each item correctly. The German guide on this topic is here: Erste Gehaltsabrechnung verstehen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do master’s graduates earn more at the start than bachelor’s graduates?

In many collective agreements and companies, the placement depends on the degree, so a higher starting salary with a master’s is common but not automatic. Check the pay scale or ask the employer how it classifies degrees. A general answer without a collective agreement reference would not be reliable.

Is the minimum wage a realistic benchmark for graduates?

No. The statutory minimum wage is a legal floor that applies to employees regardless of their degree. Your starting pay depends on your offer or collective agreement. The minimum wage is 13.90 euros gross per hour in 2026 and rises to 14.60 euros in 2027 (Federal Ministry of Labour, last updated October 2026).

How do I find out whether my employer is bound by a collective agreement?

Ask during the interview which collective agreement applies, or ask for the pay rules in writing in your contract. A reference to a collective agreement often appears in the job advertisement as well. If you are unsure, request written confirmation.

What do I get net from 4,000 euros gross?

That depends on your tax class and allowances, which is why we leave wage tax open here. The social insurance part in this example is about 818 euros per month, based on the assumption above and without unemployment insurance. Use the official calculator of the Federal Ministry of Finance for the remainder.

Should I negotiate my first salary if the employer has already made an offer?

In most cases yes, unless the pay is fixed by a collective agreement. Offers are usually open to discussion. The German guide on salary negotiation describes how to approach that conversation (in German).

What You Should Do Now

  1. Set a range for your industry and region, based on Destatis data and job advertisements with a salary figure.
  2. Check whether the employer is bound by a collective agreement and find the pay scale.
  3. Convert every offer into an annual gross and net figure, including benefits.
  4. Set your target and a minimum figure before you enter a negotiation.
