A first job as a natural scientist in industry often means pay under a collective agreement, for example in the chemical industry, and employment with statutory health insurance. Whether you stay in statutory insurance or may switch to private insurance depends mainly on your regular annual salary, not on your subject alone.
Short answer: For graduates in the German chemical industry, the collective agreement sets minimum annual salaries: EUR 74,950 with a diploma or master, EUR 87,125 with a doctorate (2026). According to the bargaining partners, these amounts apply in the second year of employment. If your annual salary is below EUR 77,400, you stay in statutory health insurance. Last updated: October 2026.
The key points
- In the collective agreement for graduates in the chemical industry, minimum annual salaries for 2026 are EUR 74,950 with a diploma or master and EUR 87,125 with a doctorate.
- These amounts apply in the second year of employment, not necessarily in the first. Your contract shows whether your employer follows the agreement.
- Outside the chemical industry there is no single figure for natural scientists. The industry and the employer decide.
- The insurance threshold for employees is EUR 77,400 per year in 2026. Below it you stay in statutory insurance.
- Assumption: at EUR 5,000 gross per month, your share of health and long-term care insurance is EUR 557.50.
Which salaries does the chemical collective agreement set for graduates?
The collective agreement for graduates in the German chemical industry is negotiated between the Federal Employers’ Association of the Chemical Industry (BAVC) and the association of salaried graduates and senior employees of the chemical industry (VAA). For 2026 the partners set minimum annual salaries that rise again after a zero round in the previous year (chemie.de, last updated 9 October 2026). These are minimum values, and your actual pay may be higher.
| Qualification | Minimum annual salary 2026 | Monthly amount (assumption: spread over 12 months) |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma or master | EUR 74,950 | EUR 6,245.83 |
| Doctorate | EUR 87,125 | EUR 7,260.42 |
The monthly column is a calculation: as an assumption, the annual amount is spread evenly over twelve months. Whether special payments and allowances come on top depends on the agreement and your contract, and they are not included here.
What pay applies outside the chemical industry?
Other industries apply other collective agreements or company rules, and not every employer applies an agreement at all. There is therefore no reliable figure for all natural scientists. Ask about the agreement, the pay grade and the step during the application, and compare offers by annual gross pay. An overview of starting salaries by subject is in the guide Starting salaries 2026 by subject.
What does the salary mean for health insurance?
As an employee you are compulsorily insured as long as your regular annual salary stays below the insurance threshold (§ 6 para. 1 no. 1 SGB V, in German). In 2026 the threshold is EUR 6,450 per month or EUR 77,400 per year (GKV-Spitzenverband, last updated 1 January 2026). Above it you may choose private insurance, but you are not required to.
The minimum annual salaries of the chemical agreement are below this threshold with a diploma or master, and above it with a doctorate. In practice, this means that the question of private insurance may come up with a doctorate, but usually not with a diploma or master. Your actual annual salary decides, not the minimum.
Worked example: your share of health and long-term care insurance
Assumption: EUR 5,000 gross per month, no children and older than 23, an average additional contribution of 2.9 percent (2026). Your share:
- Health insurance: (14.6 + 2.9) divided by 2 equals 8.75 percent, that is EUR 437.50
- Long-term care insurance: 3.6 divided by 2 equals 1.8 percent, plus the 0.6 percent childless surcharge, that is 2.4 percent and EUR 120.00
- Together: EUR 557.50 per month
Income tax, pension and unemployment insurance are not included. For a net estimate, use the tax calculator of the Federal Ministry of Finance (bmf-steuerrechner.de).
Frequently asked questions
Does the chemical agreement apply to every job in the chemical sector?
No. It applies to employers that are bound by it or apply it. Check your contract for the agreement that applies and for any allowances or company rules above the agreed pay.
Is switching to private insurance worth it above EUR 77,400?
That depends on the tariff, your health, family plans and how contributions develop over time. Compare benefits and contribution adjustments, and take your time. For a personal assessment, you can contact Academycon.
With a doctorate, do I have to switch to private insurance?
No. The threshold allows a switch but does not require one. If you stay in statutory insurance, the contribution is based on your income up to the contribution assessment ceiling. The decision is a choice, not an obligation.
Do these figures also apply next year?
The agreement values apply to 2026. They may change from next year, and the insurance threshold is set again each year. Check the current version with the bargaining partners and your health insurer.
