Disability insurance for veterinary medicine students is a topic many people only address after the state examination. Yet the type of work you later do already shapes the contract, and veterinarians work in very different fields.

Short answer: Disability insurance during a veterinary medicine degree is possible. The rating follows your later work: small animal practice, large animal practice, the official veterinary service or research. Infection and sick-leave clauses can play a role. Last updated: October 2026. Legal basis: section 172 VVG.

The most important points in brief

  • Disability is measured against the occupation you last practised. During your studies a student clause with an upper limit usually applies.
  • Small animal practice, large animal practice, official duties and research differ in their physical demands. Tariffs can rate them differently.
  • An infection clause can be especially important for veterinarians. Read it carefully in the tariff.
  • The chamber and pension fund arrangements differ between federal states.
  • Answer health questions completely before you sign, because they decide later on whether benefits are paid.

How is the veterinary profession rated in disability insurance?

Under section 172 (2) VVG, a person is unable to work if they can no longer, permanently and wholly or partly, practise the occupation they last carried out in the way it was shaped before the health impairment, due to illness, bodily injury or age-related loss of strength. For veterinarians, the specific field matters. Someone who treats horses and cattle works physically in a different way from someone who mainly sees small animals in a consulting room.

Field of workWhat counts for the ratingWhat to check in the tariff
Small animal practiceConsultations, operations, diagnosticsWhether the tariff names the veterinary profession without restriction
Large animal practicePhysically demanding stable visits and transportWhether physical strain is assessed separately in the occupation description
Official veterinarian in the public serviceMonitoring, administration and inspectionsWhether a referral to other activities is provided for
Research or industryLaboratory, development and adviceWhether the activity is explicitly covered by the veterinary profession

The table shows that you should not only ask about the title of veterinarian. The occupation description and referral rules in the tariff are often more important. If you want to combine several fields, ask specifically how that mix is rated.

What applies during your studies?

While you are studying, there is no practised occupation against which the insurer can measure you. Many tariffs therefore govern the study period separately and cap the benefit in that phase. The amount of the cap and how long it applies are set out in the tariff. More on this is in our guide Student clause in disability insurance.

If you drop out or switch subjects, the rating can change. Our guide Disability insurance and dropping out explains what applies then.

Why is the infection clause important for veterinarians?

Veterinarians come into contact with animals and pathogens more often than many other professions. Some tariffs therefore contain rules on infections that restrict or extend cover. What exactly applies is set out in the conditions. Ask in writing whether and how an infection in daily work is covered, and have the wording explained to you. More is in our guide Infection clause in disability insurance.

What role do the chamber and the pension fund play?

After obtaining your licence, veterinarians are in most federal states compulsory members of the veterinary chamber. In some states there is also a professional pension fund (Versorgungswerk). Under section 6 (1) SGB VI, compulsory statutory pension insurance may not apply if compulsory membership in a chamber and a pension institution exists and further conditions are met. The statutory pension insurance carrier decides on the exemption in principle.

Depending on its statutes, a pension fund may also pay benefits in case of occupational disability. How high they are and under which conditions they are paid is set out in the statutes. A private disability policy can then be a supplement, or unnecessary if the fund already closes your gap. Check this with the documents from your chamber before you take out a policy.

Worked example: how large is the gap for an employed veterinarian?

The steps below help you estimate the gap. All figures are assumptions, not information about your case.

  1. Work out your monthly needs: rent, living costs, insurance and any loans for your studies or a car.
  2. Assumption: your needs are 1,800 euros net per month.
  3. Check your benefits in an emergency: chamber or pension fund, statutory pension for reduced earning capacity under section 43 SGB VI, and employer benefits. Assumption: together they would pay 600 euros per month.
  4. Calculate the gap: 1,800 euros minus 600 euros leaves 1,200 euros net per month. A disability pension in your tariff should be able to cover this amount. Clarify the tax effect with your tax adviser.

When does disability insurance fit during veterinary studies, and when less so?

An early policy can make sense if you plan to be self-employed or to work in large animal practice, if commitments already exist, or if your health is well documented. It can be less suitable if you are certain to join a position with good protection and your budget is tight during your studies. In that case, taking out a policy after the state examination may be the better decision, because premiums usually rise with age and the health check then relates to your condition at that time. Frequently asked questions

Can I take out disability insurance as a veterinary medicine student?

Yes, you can apply during your studies. The insurer checks your health information and the description of your future job. Whether the application is accepted, and on what terms, is decided by the insurer in each case.

Is large animal practice harder to insure than small animal practice?

Tariffs can rate it differently because physical strain plays a role. Whether and how this happens is stated in the occupation description of the tariff. Ask how the insurer rates large animal and small animal medicine.

Which health questions matter most for veterinarians?

Questions on allergies, breathing, skin conditions, back problems and earlier injuries are relevant to daily work. Answer them completely, because under section 19 VVG you must disclose material circumstances about which the insurer has asked.

Does the policy still apply during the probation period of an employment?

The contract continues regardless of your employment. What matters is that your occupation is correctly described in the tariff. A change in the occupation description can affect the benefit, so notify the insurer of changes if the tariff requires it.

How do I compare tariffs sensibly?

Use a fixed checklist covering the student clause, occupation description, referral clause, infection clause, health questions and post-insurance guarantee. The full list is in our guide disability insurance checklist for students.

What to do now

  1. Note the field you want to work in later: small animal, large animal, official service or research.
  2. Have the infection clause and the occupation description of the tariff explained to you in writing.
  3. Compile your health history completely before you fill in the application.
  4. Compare at least three tariffs with the same checklist and clarify open points in writing.
