Anyone wanting to take out disability insurance as an architecture student should first check how the occupation is described in the tariff. Architects work in offices, on construction sites and often as self-employed professionals, and these differences later decide how the job is rated.

Short answer: Disability insurance during an architecture degree is possible. The rating follows the work you actually do: office planning, site supervision or self-employment are described differently in tariffs. For architects, the chamber and the pension fund (Versorgungswerk) also matter. Last updated: October 2026. Legal bases: section 172 VVG and section 6 SGB VI.

The most important points in brief

  • Disability is measured against the occupation you last practised. During your studies you have not yet practised one, so a student clause often applies.
  • Office work and site supervision are not necessarily rated the same way in tariffs. Check the occupation description in writing.
  • Many architects are self-employed. Without an employer, the employer’s protection falls away, and the disability policy has to replace it.
  • Chamber membership and a pension fund can replace statutory pension insurance. Whether and how this applies depends on state law.
  • A post-insurance guarantee and a clear referral rule often matter more at the start of your career than a low entry premium.

How is the architect profession rated in disability insurance?

Under section 172 (2) VVG, a person is unable to work if they can no longer, permanently and wholly or partly, practise the occupation they last carried out in the way it was shaped before the health impairment, due to illness, bodily injury or age-related loss of strength. For architects, what you actually do decides the rating. Someone who plans at a drawing board or on a computer has a different focus from someone who works on a building site every day.

Work after graduationWhat counts for the ratingWhat to check in the tariff
Planning and design in an officeConcept, planning and coordination workWhether the occupation description explicitly covers office work
Site supervision on a construction siteMonitoring the execution on site, physical strainWhether site work is assessed separately in the tariff
Self-employed architectIndependent project management and office organisationWhether the tariff covers self-employment
Employed in an architecture firmTeamwork under directionReferral to other construction activities and health questions

The table shows why you should not rely on a single term such as architect. Ask for the conditions to explain which activities count as architectural work and which do not. If your work mixes both, ask specifically how that mix is rated.

What applies during your studies?

During your studies there is no practised occupation against which the insurer can measure you. Many tariffs therefore govern the study period separately and cap the benefit in that phase. The amount and duration of this cap are set out in the tariff. More on this is in our guide Student clause in disability insurance.

Internships and student jobs in an architecture office can play a role in some tariffs too. Ask the insurer whether a part-time job affects your cover before you sign the application.

What role do the chamber and the pension fund play?

In many countries, architects are compulsory members of an architects’ chamber. Some states also have a professional pension fund (Versorgungswerk). Under section 6 (1) SGB VI, employees and self-employed persons who are required by law to belong to a professional pension institution and a chamber may be exempt from statutory pension insurance under further conditions. The statutory pension insurance carrier decides on the exemption in principle, after checking the conditions.

Depending on its statutes, a pension fund also pays benefits in case of occupational disability. How high these benefits are and under which conditions they are paid is set out in the statutes of the fund. A private disability policy can therefore be a supplement, but it may also be unnecessary if the fund’s benefits already close your gap. Check this against the documents from your chamber before you take out a policy.

Worked example: how large is the gap if you are self-employed?

Self-employed people have no employer who pays wages during an illness. The steps below show how to estimate the gap. All figures are assumptions.

  1. Work out your monthly needs for rent, living costs, insurance and office expenses.
  2. Assumption: your monthly needs are 2,000 euros net.
  3. Check which benefits the pension fund or the statutory pension for reduced earning capacity under section 43 SGB VI would pay in an emergency. Assumption: the pension fund pays 800 euros per month in your case.
  4. Calculate the gap: 2,000 euros minus 800 euros leaves 1,200 euros net per month. A disability pension should cover this gap if you consider it necessary. Clarify the tax effect with your tax adviser.

When does disability insurance fit during architecture studies, and when less so?

An early policy can make sense if you expect to work self-employed, if your income is likely to fluctuate at the start of your career, or if commitments already exist, such as a loan or a family. It may be less suitable if you are certain to join an office with good protection and your budget is tight during your studies. In that case, taking out a policy after your final exams may be the better decision, because premiums usually rise with age. A personal assessment is possible in a conversation with Academycon.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take out disability insurance as an architecture student?

Yes, you can apply during your studies. The insurer checks your health information and the description of your future job. Whether the application is accepted, and on what terms, is decided by the insurer in each case.

What if I change my career after graduating?

If you move into a different field, a referral clause may allow the insurer to refer you to another activity. Read the rules in your tariff. The guide on post-insurance guarantees in disability insurance explains how to extend cover later.

Is a policy valid if I only work on a construction site?

That depends on how the tariff words the occupation. If site supervision is described as its own focus, the insurer may rate it differently from pure office work. Ask for the exact occupation description and the rating for your focus.

Do I need professional liability insurance as an architect?

The chamber laws of the federal states set this out. In many states, professional liability insurance is compulsory for architects. It is a different product from disability insurance and protects against damage claims by third parties, not against loss of earning capacity.

How do I compare tariffs sensibly?

Use a fixed checklist covering the student clause, occupation description, referral clause, health questions and post-insurance guarantee. The full list is in our guide disability insurance checklist for students.

What to do now

  1. Note whether you want to work in an office, on a construction site or self-employed later on.
  2. Ask your competent chamber whether compulsory membership and a pension fund apply to you.
  3. Have the tariff’s occupation description given to you in writing and check how site supervision is worded.
  4. Compare at least three tariffs with the same checklist before you submit an application.
