In short
A DBA in Germany (Doctor of Business Administration) is not automatically a recognised doctorate. Whether you may use “Dr.” depends on the state law at your main place of residence, on how the degree is classified in the country of origin and on whether a doctoral procedure took place. In Bremen, no permit is required. Unlawful use of a title is a criminal offence.

Is a DBA a doctorate in Germany?
Not in general. The DBA is a foreign degree whose classification depends on the country of origin, the awarding university and the type of programme. Many DBA programmes are part-time and combine teaching with an independent research project. Whether this leads to a doctorate that may be used as “Dr.” is shown by a look at anabin and at the requirements of the state.
The German route to the doctoral title leads through a doctorate at a university with the right to award doctorates. The requirements for this are described in our article Doctorate in Germany (in German). A DBA must be kept separate from this, even though the two titles sound similar.
How do a DBA and a German doctorate differ?
The difference lies less in the name than in the procedure and the legal classification. The following overview shows the points that matter for using the title.
| Feature | German doctorate | DBA from abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Awarding body | University with the right to award doctorates in Germany | University abroad, often in cooperation with a German business school |
| Classification | Doctorate under German law | Classification by country of origin and type of programme, checkable in anabin |
| Use of the title | “Dr.” before the name | Depends on state rules; original form with the awarding body |
| Responsible body | University and examination office | Authority in the state of your main place of residence |
May I use “Dr.” with a DBA in Germany?
That may be permitted, but it has to be checked for your specific degree. Under the Bremen rule (status February 2022), a doctorate from the United Kingdom may be used as “Dr.” without an indication of origin. Professional doctorates without a doctoral procedure are excluded. The DBA is not named explicitly in this information sheet, so the classification in an individual case depends on the competent body.
Business schools that offer DBA programmes naturally describe the title positively. Such a statement does not replace the check. What counts are the state law at your main place of residence and the classification in anabin.
In which form may I use the title?
The original form with the name of the awarding body is permitted. Converting it into a German degree is not permitted. The Bremen rule additionally allows a Latin transliteration, an abbreviation and a translation in brackets. What matters is that the reader can see where the title comes from.
What happens if the title is used incorrectly?
Anyone who uses a title they are not entitled to commits an offence under section 132a of the German Criminal Code (StGB). The penalty can reach up to one year of imprisonment or a fine. The information sheet from Bremen expressly cites this provision. As long as the classification has not been clarified, you should not use the title in applications, on business cards or in contracts.
What should I do now?
- Gather your certificate, your transcript and the university’s information on accreditation.
- Check the degree in anabin and note how the awarding university is classified.
- Ask the competent body in the state of your main place of residence whether “Dr.” is permitted.
- Choose the form: the original form with the awarding body, if necessary with a translation in brackets.
- Do not convert the title into a German doctorate; that is not permitted.
- Repeat the check if you move, because state law depends on your main place of residence.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need recognition for a DBA in Germany?
In Bremen, no permit is required, because no case-by-case decisions are provided for there. The competent state is that of your main place of residence, not the place where you studied. Other states may proceed differently, so it is worth asking.
May I add the DBA as a suffix after my name?
Yes, if the title is used in its original form with the name of the awarding body. Whether a suffix without “Dr.” is permitted depends on the same state rules. The original form is the one you can most easily prove.
Is a DBA a professional doctorate?
This cannot be said across the board. Professional doctorates without a doctoral procedure are excluded from the rule for “Dr.”. Whether your programme includes a doctoral procedure is shown by the examination regulations of the university and by the classification in anabin.
Does a DBA help me with applications?
That is decided by the employer on a case-by-case basis. A title does not replace work experience or a qualification that a selection process requires.
