If you do not get a university place after school, you do not automatically lose child benefit. The law sets a transition period of at most four months and cases in which a training place is missing. For child benefit while waiting for a university place, the law contains no explicit rule, so a written statement from the family benefits office is important. Family insurance ends without training at 23, so the bridge is the real bottleneck.

Child benefit while waiting: how the rules apply
A transition of up to four months between two stages of training does not harm child benefit. A longer wait for a university place is not expressly mentioned in the law, which refers to vocational training that does not begin for lack of a training place. Many family benefits offices therefore examine the individual case based on your applications. This means you should document your applications and rejections without gaps. How applications and waiting semesters work is explained in NC and waiting time at university (in German).
What happens to family insurance?
Without training, family insurance is possible up to age 23 if your child is not employed. From 23, it ends in this situation, and your child needs their own insurance. A mini-job only changes this if the health insurer considers the employment an obstacle. The four-month transition period is important for family insurance too, because it can bridge the gap until studies begin.
Which bridging options are possible?
| Option | Child benefit | Health insurance | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini-job | No effect | Family insurance up to 603 euros, checked by age | An interim step with your own income |
| Voluntary social year or federal voluntary service | Continues up to 25 | Own compulsory insurance | See the text on the voluntary social year and federal voluntary service |
| Vocational training or internship | Continues if training begins | Family insurance during training up to 25 | An entry can also fit well with studies later |
| No activity, registered as job-seeking | Up to 21 years | From 23, own insurance | Registration with the employment agency required |
Worked example: three months without family insurance
- Your child is 23, has no training and waits three months for a university place.
- Without family insurance and without income, voluntary insurance applies, calculated on the minimum amount: 3 × 270.26 euros = 810.78 euros for three months, as a 2026 reference value.
- Child benefit in this period: 3 × 259 euros = 777 euros, only if the family benefits office recognises the entitlement for the waiting period.
The figures show that the waiting period is a real cost issue. A mini-job or a voluntary year can change the situation, so it is worth looking at the details. The family insurance check can run the numbers for your own case.
How to proceed
- Collect all applications, confirmations of receipt and rejections, and put them in one folder.
- Ask the family benefits office in writing whether child benefit continues during the waiting period, and enclose the evidence.
- Register your child with the employment agency as job-seeking if they are under 21 and have no activity.
- Clarify with the health insurer when family insurance ends, and plan your own insurance in good time.
- Have a plan B ready, such as training or a voluntary year, so that the waiting period is not lost.
Frequently asked questions
Does my child receive child benefit while waiting for a university place?

Does my child stay in my family insurance if they have no university place?
Without training, yes, up to age 23, if they are not employed. From 23, family insurance ends in this situation.

Which evidence should I collect?
Applications, admission notices, rejections, the school certificate, evidence of mini-jobs and proof of insurance status.
