Career Start as an Architect: Pay, Insurance and Cover

Career start as an architect in Germany: salary in an office, contributions as an employee and as a freelancer, and disability cover for planning work.

Contents

Your career start as an architect usually begins as an employee in an architecture office, a building authority or the construction industry. Many start employed before they take on their own projects. No sector-wide collective agreement is documented for private architecture offices. Pay therefore depends on the office, the region and the contract.

Short answer: For employed architects no starting figure is stated, because no checked source exists. Comparison values come from the salary atlas of the Federal Employment Agency. If your annual earnings stay below EUR 77,400 (2026 limit), you are compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance. Last updated: October 2026.

Key points

  • No general sector collective agreement for architecture offices is documented. Pay is set in your employment contract.
  • The salary atlas of the Federal Employment Agency shows pay by occupation and region. It is a comparison, not a contract basis.
  • Employees with annual earnings below EUR 77,400 (2026) are compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance.
  • Freelance architects are voluntarily insured. The calculated minimum contribution for 2026 is EUR 222.80 per month.
  • State law decides whether you must join a pension scheme for architects (Versorgungswerk). Your state chamber of architects can tell you.

How do you find a realistic salary range?

The Salary atlas (Entgeltatlas) of the Federal Employment Agency (in German) is a public comparison. It shows pay by occupation and region, based on social insurance data. Enter the job title and compare regions before you start negotiating.

Do not compare monthly totals alone. Also ask about working hours, overtime, leave, further training and any non-compete clause. Only all of these together make two offers comparable.

Which social insurance contributions apply to an employed architect?

Employees earning less than EUR 77,400 a year (2026) are compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance (Section 6 of the Social Code Book V (SGB V), gesetze-im-internet.de (in German)). The contribution is the general rate of 14.6 percent plus the additional rate, which averages 2.9 percent. Employer and employee share both halves. Care insurance is 3.6 percent. Childless people from age 23 pay the 0.6 percentage point surcharge alone (Federal Ministry of Health, childless surcharge (in German)).

Assumption: gross salary EUR 4,200 per month, statutory health insurance, childless from age 23, status 2026.

  1. Health insurance share: 8.75 percent of EUR 4,200 is EUR 367.50.
  2. Care insurance share: 1.8 percent of EUR 4,200 is EUR 75.60.
  3. Childless surcharge, paid by you alone: 0.6 percent of EUR 4,200 is EUR 25.20.
  4. Total: 367.50 plus 75.60 plus 25.20 is EUR 468.30 per month.

The 2026 contribution assessment ceiling is EUR 5,812.50 per month and is not reached in this example. Income tax, pension and unemployment insurance are not included. Calculate net pay with the tax and contribution calculator of the German Federal Ministry of Finance (in German). Source for the rates: GKV-Spitzenverband, fact sheet on contribution figures, status 1 January 2026 (in German).

How does health insurance work for a freelance architect?

If you plan on your own account, no employer insures you. Voluntary members of statutory health insurance pay on at least EUR 1,318.33 per month (2026). This gives a calculated minimum contribution of EUR 222.80 per month (assumption: reduced rate of 14.0 percent plus additional rate of 2.9 percent). For care insurance the calculated minimum is EUR 47.46 per month, or EUR 55.37 with the childless surcharge (assumption: 3.6 and 4.2 percent, source GKV-Spitzenverband, fact sheet on contribution figures, status 1 January 2026 (in German)).

Whether a pension scheme for architects is compulsory is decided by state law, and it differs between states. Your state chamber of architects clarifies whether membership is required and which contributions apply.

Which disability cover fits the architect profession?

Disability insurance pays based on the job you last did (Section 172 of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG), gesetze-im-internet.de (in German), paragraph 2). Architects plan at a desk and often work on site. Whether the tariff assesses these activities separately is written in the contract. Pay particular attention to the referral to other activities (paragraph 3), because it can limit the benefit in individual cases.

If your job changes from employee to self-employed, check whether the tariff still covers the new profile. Before you apply, you must disclose pre-existing conditions (Section 19 VVG, gesetze-im-internet.de (in German)). For costs and the start, see Disability insurance for students: costs and start.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to join the chamber of architects for the start?

The title architect is protected in the states. Whether you must be entered on the list of architects depends on state law. The chamber explains the requirements and your duties.

Are there posts with collective agreements in the public sector?

Public administrations often apply collective agreements. Your pay grade depends on your qualification and employer. These details are in the job advertisement and in the employment contract.

Is disability insurance unnecessary if I work in an office?

No. Disability insurance pays if an illness permanently limits your profession, whether you work in an office or on a building site. The type of work does affect the premium and the referral clause.

What changes for my health insurance when I become self-employed?

The contribution base changes. As an employee you pay on your salary. Voluntarily you pay on at least EUR 1,318.33 per month (2026). Agree the change with your health insurer before you start.

Next steps

  1. Compare salary offers with the salary atlas by occupation and region before you negotiate.
  2. Check working hours, overtime and the non-compete clause in the employment contract.
  3. Calculate gross pay with the contributions above and check net pay with the official calculator.
  4. Ask your state chamber of architects whether registration or a pension scheme applies to you.
  5. Have the disability tariff explained against your job profile before you sign.
