Disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for business students depends more on classification than in many other subjects. After graduation you could work in controlling, sales, consulting, HR or start your own company. That breadth makes it difficult to say which occupation the policy will use as its basis. This guide shows how to check that, which cost factors matter and what to watch for in the health questions.
Short answer: Last updated: October 2026. There is no flat premium for business students. The price depends on age at entry, health, the pension amount and the term. More important than the premium is which occupational group the insurer assigns to your studies, because that decides whether the pension pays out in a real case.
Key points
- Occupational disability is tied by law to your last occupation (section 172 (2) VVG).
- Without work experience, the policy decides which activity forms the basis.
- Internships, part-time jobs and start-up projects can matter for the classification. Ask how they are assessed.
- The premium depends mainly on age, health, pension amount and term.
- Answer the health questions completely and truthfully.
What does occupational disability mean in law?
Under section 172 (2) of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG), a person is occupationally disabled if they can no longer, wholly or partly, for an extended period, carry out their last occupation because of illness, injury or more than age-related wear. For students the key phrase is “last occupation”. Anyone who has not yet entered working life often only has internships or part-time jobs to point to.
Under section 172 (3) VVG, the parties may additionally agree that a referral to other work applies only if that work matches your training, abilities and previous social position. Check whether your policy contains this clause and how it is worded.
How is a business degree classified?
Insurers assign students to occupational groups, and the assignment varies between companies. What matters is whether a role counts as an office or administrative job, as field sales with customer contact, or as self-employment. The table shows where business students should look more closely.
| Check | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Internships and part-time jobs | They show what you actually do day to day | Note the tasks and weekly hours |
| Start-up or self-employment | Your own projects need a precise job description | Describe planned ventures in writing |
| Sales or field work | Customer contact and travel can be assessed differently | Compare your activity profile with the application |
| Change of subject during studies | A change can alter the classification | Check the reporting duties in the policy |
What does disability insurance cost for business students?
There is no single sum for all business students. Prices only become comparable once age, health, occupational group, pension amount and term are the same. A low premium can go hand in hand with lower benefits when you need them, so read the terms, not only the price.
A worked example of the coverage gap. Assumption: you want 2,500 euros per month available if you become unable to work. Assumption: the disability pension is 1,200 euros per month. The gap is then 1,300 euros per month. This shows how much cover is missing before you choose a premium.
Which health questions do you have to answer?
The application asks about diagnoses, treatment and medication over recent years. Many applications also ask about the spine, mental health and eyesight. Answer every question completely and truthfully, because with incorrect or incomplete information the insurer can withdraw from the contract. - List doctor visits and diagnoses with time periods.
- Ask if a term in the application is unclear.
- Note complaints you think are minor.
- Keep a copy of the completed application.
Is it worth signing while studying?
An early policy has the advantage that you are healthy now and the classification can be settled before your career path is fixed. Against it: a tight budget during studies, and a classification that may change with your first job. If you weigh both, choose a policy that still makes sense after a change of subject.

Frequently asked questions
Does a business internship count as an occupation?
That depends on the contract. An internship is often not employment in the narrow sense. Ask the insurer before you sign whether it counts for the classification and keep the answer in writing.
Can I still change my career direction after signing?
A later change of occupation can affect the policy. Report changes in the way the contract requires, and check beforehand whether the occupational group can be adjusted.
Is disability insurance more expensive during studies than later?
Premiums generally rise with age at entry, and health plays a role in the assessment. Whether a later policy becomes cheaper cannot be said in general, because health and job profile can both change.
How high should the pension be?
Base it on what you would actually need in a claim. Calculate your fixed costs before you pick a sum. A pension that is too low helps little in a real case, and one that is too high can raise the premium without need.
