Dentistry is a degree with a single destination: the dental profession. For disability insurance during dentistry studies that is an advantage when describing the target profession, and also the reason to look closely at the manual side of the work. The general mechanics of disability insurance are in the guide for students; this article covers what is different for this subject.

Short answer: Under the dentist licensing regulations (Approbationsordnung für Zahnärzte), dentistry takes ten semesters and ends with the dental state examination, followed by licensure (Approbation). Only the dentist qualifies as target profession. What matters for disability cover is how the insurer classifies this profession and which strains of daily treatment work the health questions touch (as of October 2026).

The Most Important Points

  • Ten semesters of standard study time, five in the preclinical and five in the clinical part.
  • The target profession is unambiguous, but the insurer’s classification should still be in writing.
  • The work consists of precise manual treatment of patients, which shapes questions about the musculoskeletal system, skin and allergies.
  • Entry into practice usually happens through employment; self-employment later can change what the contract must cover.
  • The legal mechanics of health questions are in the guide for medical students and apply here as well.

How Long Does Dentistry Study Take?

The Approbationsordnung für Zahnärzte sets out the structure. The programme is divided into a preclinical and a clinical part of five semesters each. Examination time is added, so the standard period of study is ten semesters and six months. Practical elements are integrated in courses, polyclinics and clinics.

The details come from a university copy of the regulations in the 1992 version. Check the version in force today in federal law before relying on individual sections.

Which Activities and Strains Define the Dental Profession?

Dentists work with small instruments in the mouth, over long periods and usually in a fixed posture. Added to this are X-ray diagnostics within radiation protection rules, the handling of disinfectants and dental materials, and practice organisation. For disability cover it matters that this work is physical and fine-motor in character. A limitation of the hands, back or eyesight therefore affects practising directly.

Which strain counts when a claim arises depends on the job description in the application. The more precisely it reflects daily treatment work, the easier it is later to establish what was last practised.

How Does the Insurer Classify Dentistry Students?

Insurers set the classification of their occupational groups themselves. Whether students are placed by subject, by intended profession or in a student group of their own is governed by the individual tariff. Stiftung Warentest points out that the intended target profession should be taken into account, and advises that in degrees with many job options it should be possible to state it in the contract (press release of 21 August 2018, in German). Dentistry is not such a degree because there is only one target profession. Still, ask in writing which occupational group you are placed in.

What Is Special About Health Questions in Dentistry Studies?

The duty of disclosure under section 19 VVG (in German) is the same for every subject: only questions the insurer put in text form count. What is subject-related is the content of the questionnaires. Depending on the insurer they cover musculoskeletal complaints, skin conditions and allergies, areas that can matter when working with gloves and materials for long periods. The wording decides, not an assumption about what is typical for your profession.

Dental treatment in your own past is usually relevant only if the questionnaire expressly covers it. Answer each question as it is put.

What Influences the Premium in Dentistry Studies?

We do not state premiums of individual insurers. According to Stiftung Warentest, age and state of health influence the price strongly, which is why an early start, for example at the beginning of studies, is considered cheaper. Many insurers offer starter tariffs whose premium is lower at first and rises later.

Worked example. Assumption: a starter tariff costs half of a normal tariff in the first five years but afterwards twice the entry rate. Total cost over the term can then end up higher than with the normal tariff. Comparing over the whole term protects against this effect. More on costs and timing is in the general guide.

What Happens After Your Studies?

After the dental state examination you apply for licensure with the competent state authority. Career entry is often as an employed dentist, with a practice of your own or a takeover frequently following. With self-employment the activity changes, and the contract should reflect it. Members of dental professional pension funds usually also receive a disability pension there, the amount being set by the fund’s bylaws. Private disability insurance supplements it as needed. For the cost of dental treatment itself, see student dental insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does disability insurance make sense in dentistry studies?

According to Stiftung Warentest an early start is cheaper because age and health determine the price. Whether it suits you depends on budget and cover from other sources.

How does the insurer classify me as a student?

Every insurer sets this itself. Have the occupational group and the job description confirmed in writing.

Do I have to state my own dental treatment?

Only if the questionnaire asks about it. The wording in text form counts (section 19 para. 1 VVG).

What changes when I take over a practice?

The employed dentist becomes the practice-owning dentist with administration and staff responsibility. Check whether the contract covers that activity.

What to Do Now

  1. Request the job description and occupational group for dentistry students in writing.
  2. Go through the health questions on the musculoskeletal system, skin and allergies calmly.
  3. Compare tariffs on total cost over the term.
  4. Plan the adjustment of the contract for licensure and setting up a practice.
