Disability Insurance for Mechanical Engineering Students

Mechanical engineering graduates often work in design, production or testing. Here is how to check how the policy classifies that path, and which health questions need care.

Disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for mechanical engineering students deserves a close look, because daily work can look very different. Design at a desk, production on the shop floor, testing in a lab and field service at customer sites are different activities with different strains. This guide explains how to check the classification, which costs count and how to answer the health questions.

Short answer: Last updated: October 2026. There is no flat premium for mechanical engineering students. The price depends on age at entry, health, pension amount and term. For a claim it matters whether the policy treats workshop, lab and field work in the same way as office work. Ask this in writing before you sign.

Key points

  • Under section 172 (2) VVG, occupational disability is tied to your last occupation.
  • In engineering, office, workshop and field roles differ a lot. The policy should reflect those differences.
  • Internships and working-student roles in design, manufacturing or testing matter for the classification.
  • The premium depends on age at entry, health, pension amount and term.
  • Answer health questions completely and truthfully.

What does the law say about occupational disability?

Under section 172 (2) of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG), occupational disability means you can no longer, wholly or partly, for an extended period, carry out your last occupation because of illness, injury or more than age-related wear. A degree without work experience gives no fixed point of reference, so the contract determines the classification.

Under section 172 (3) VVG, the parties may agree that a referral to other work applies only if that work matches your training, abilities and previous social position. For engineers this clause is important, because design and production work differ considerably.

How is a mechanical engineering degree classified?

Insurers assess engineering work by the actual working environment. Desk work in design is often viewed differently from physical work in production. The table lists what to check before you sign an application. If your course includes a practical semester, it is one of the activities you should list in the application.

What does disability insurance cost for mechanical engineering students?

There is no fixed sum for all mechanical engineering students. Premiums are only comparable when age, health, occupational group, pension amount and term are the same. Check how the occupational group is defined, not only the price.

A worked example of the coverage gap. Assumption: you want 2,200 euros per month available if you become unable to work. Assumption: the disability pension is 1,100 euros per month. The gap is 1,100 euros per month. Use this figure to check which pension level is realistic for you.

Which health questions do you have to answer?

The application asks about diagnoses, treatment and medication over recent years. Engineers whose work involves physical strain should record complaints of the musculoskeletal system with particular care. With incorrect or incomplete answers, the insurer can assert rights, for example withdrawal from the contract. For more on the review, see our glossary on health insurance for students.

  1. Note treatments of the musculoskeletal system with date and doctor.
  2. Include recurring complaints, even if they are well treated.
  3. Ask if a question can be read in more than one way.
  4. Keep a copy of the completed application.

When does it make sense to sign while studying?

An early policy has the advantage that you are healthy and the classification can be settled before your career path is fixed. Against it: internships and part-time jobs often say little about the later job yet. A policy with clear referral rules stays more flexible in this phase.

Frequently asked questions

Does an internship in manufacturing count as an occupation?

An internship is usually not employment in the narrow sense. Whether it is considered depends on the contract. Describe the activity precisely and get the assessment in writing.

How do shift work or assembly assignments affect the classification?

Whether such work is assessed separately depends on the contract. Describe the workplace, the strain and any travel in the application as precisely as possible.

Must I report the move from study to career?

Whether and when you must report changes is set out in the policy terms. Before you sign, ask which changes are relevant.

Is employer cover enough?

Occupational cover through an employer can supplement a policy, but it does not automatically replace your own. Which benefits your employer offers, and for how long, is set out in the employer’s documents.

What to do next

  1. Note which activities you carry out in internships and part-time jobs.
  2. Ask in writing how your mechanical engineering studies are classified.
  3. Compare occupational group, referral clause and exclusions.
  4. Answer the health questions completely and keep copies.
