If you want to study in Germany from Cameroon, plan three things early: a national study visa, proof that you can finance your first year and health insurance that German authorities accept. This guide goes through each step with the figures and dates published by the German Embassy in Yaoundé.
Short answer: Applicants from Cameroon must show at least 992 euros per month, according to the study page of the German Embassy in Yaoundé (status 2026). For a first year that is 11,904 euros (Assumption: twelve months at 992 euros). Before enrolment you need private health insurance from a German provider with unlimited sum insured, valid for at least two months. Apply online and at VFS Global in Yaoundé.
The most important points
- Apply for a national visa for study under section 16b of the Residence Act. Applications run through the German online portal and VFS Global in Yaoundé.
- The blocked account needs at least 992 euros per month (status 2026, German Embassy in Yaoundé).
- Before enrolment, your private insurance must come from a German provider with unlimited sum insured and run for at least two months.
- A language certificate is only required if your university has not checked your skills or does not confirm them in the admission letter.
- Do not send documents unsolicited. The Embassy says it deletes them, and it advises against visa agencies.
How much money must you show for the blocked account?
The study page of the German Embassy in Yaoundé names a minimum of 992 euros per month. It does not give a total for the year, so the first-year figure in the table is our calculation.
| Item | Amount | Source and status |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly minimum | 992 euros | German Embassy Yaoundé, study page, status 2026 |
| First study year (Assumption: 12 months) | 11,904 euros | Calculation from the monthly minimum |
| Sponsor’s commitment | Possible, if the sponsor’s assets are in Germany | German Embassy Yaoundé, study page |
Assumption: you enrol in October 2026 and need the funds for twelve months. The sponsor option is only open if the sponsor is located in Germany and holds the assets there.
Which health insurance do you need before enrolment?
Until you are enrolled at a German university, you need private health insurance. For a study visa from Cameroon, the Embassy asks for a German provider with unlimited sum insured and a validity of at least two months. If you attend a language course with an exam in Germany before your studies, the insurance must be valid for at least one year. After enrolment, German statutory student insurance applies, and the costs are shown below.
| Situation | Monthly contribution, 2026 | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Under 23 or with a child | 142.96 euros | Assumption: average additional contribution of 2.9 percent and a student who does not live with parents (base 855 euros). Source: GKV-Spitzenverband, figures for 2026. |
| From age 23, without a child | 148.09 euros | Adds the childless nursing care surcharge (4.2 percent in total instead of 3.6 percent). |
The additional contribution depends on your health insurer, so the table shows an average. It is not an offer from any insurer. For a general explanation of the two options, read our guide on public or private health insurance for international students.
Do you need an APS certificate and which language proof?
The Yaoundé page does not mention an APS certificate, so ask the Embassy and your university whether one applies to your case. For German-taught programmes, the Embassy accepts only ALTE-certified tests such as TestDaF, Goethe-Institut, telc or ECL. ECL needs at least 60 percent in each module for applications from 1 August 2026, and the oldest module may be no more than one year old. English-taught programmes follow the same logic with IELTS or TOEFL.
How do you apply for a study visa in Cameroon?
A study visa from Cameroon is a national visa under section 16b of the Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz). The Embassy processes it in these steps:
- Register in the German online portal for study applications (Auslandsportal) and upload your documents.
- Book an appointment at VFS Global in Yaoundé. VFS accepts the application, records your biometric data and checks that the file is complete.
- Bring originals and copies. At the consulate, put the originals in folder 1 and the copies in folder 2. Do not staple or clip the pages.
- Pay the visa fee. The page lists 50,000 CFA francs (XAF) for applicants aged 18 and over and 25,000 XAF for applicants under 18, plus VFS service fees. The page gives no date for these fees.
- Wait for the decision. The Embassy or the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs (BfAA) decides on your application.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Embassy accept other proof than a blocked account?
The study page names a sponsor’s commitment as an option, and the sponsor’s assets must be located in Germany. The part of the page we checked lists no other option, so ask the Embassy in Yaoundé which proofs it accepts in your case before you pay for a process.
Do scholarship holders pay the visa fee?
No. The Embassy’s page says scholarship holders pay no fee. Ask your scholarship provider for a written confirmation of the amount and the period.
Can my home insurance from Cameroon replace German cover?
Not before enrolment, because the Embassy asks for a German provider. After enrolment, German statutory insurance applies. Whether a home cover can be recognised depends on a social security agreement between Germany and your country, and the Deutsche Verbindungsstelle Krankenversicherung Ausland (DVKA) can tell you more.
What if I am under 18 when I apply?
The fee is lower for applicants under 18. The Embassy also requires all persons with custody to attend the appointment and sign the application, unless one of the alternatives named on the page applies.
Do I need an agency to help with the visa?
The Embassy advises against visa agencies. Submit your application only through the official online portal and at the VFS Global appointment.
What changes after you arrive?
After enrolment you move from private cover to German statutory student insurance. Plan the switch early, so that you have no gap in cover. If you are 30 or older, different rules apply, and our guide on health insurance for students over 30 explains them.
