Getting wage tax back as a student: if you work alongside your studies, you often pay more wage tax than necessary by the end of the year. Wage tax is deducted monthly as a flat amount and does not reflect every expense. A worked example shows when a refund is realistic and how to calculate it.

Short answer: Wage tax withheld in excess is refunded through the income tax assessment. In 2026 the basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag) is 12,348 euros, and the employee lump sum (Arbeitnehmer-Pauschbetrag) is 1,230 euros (§ 32a and § 9a EStG). If your taxable income is below the basic allowance, generally no income tax is due and the withheld wage tax is largely refunded. Last updated: October 2026.

The most important points

  • Wage tax is an advance payment on your income tax. It is calculated as a flat amount based on tax class and pay.
  • At year end the actual income tax counts. If it is lower than the wage tax withheld, you receive a refund.
  • The basic allowance for 2026 is 12,348 euros. Below it, no income tax is due.
  • The employee lump sum for 2026 is 1,230 euros and applies automatically if you do not claim higher work-related expenses.
  • You apply for the refund with an income tax return. The assessment period is four years.

How does too much wage tax come about?

Your employer deducts wage tax each month based on pay and tax class. It uses tables with a flat allowance built in. These tables cannot reflect every personal situation. If you work only a few months in the year, earn more in one month or have higher work-related expenses, you often get money back at year end.

The reverse also applies: a payment may be due if you earn more than the monthly deduction assumes or have other income. An assessment looks at the overall picture and balances both.

Which figures do you need for the calculation?

The following values form the basis. They come from the statutes and are dated accordingly.

ItemValueLegal basis and status
Basic allowance12,348 euros per year§ 32a EStG, assessment year 2026, status October 2026
Employee lump sum1,230 euros per year§ 9a EStG, 2026, status October 2026
Basic allowance 202712,564 euros per yearGovernment draft of 2 September 2026, not yet adopted
Wage tax deductionMonthly, by tax class§ 39e EStG, electronic wage tax characteristics (ELStAM)

The basic allowance for 2027 is only a draft. Values may still change before they take effect. For the calculation of 2026, the value currently in force applies.

Which documents you need for the return

Before you calculate, collect the documents that determine your result. A complete folder saves you queries and follow-up requests.

  • All payslips for the year, or your employer’s wage tax certificate with annual gross pay and wage tax withheld
  • Evidence of work-related expenses, such as travel costs, work equipment or specialist literature, if they exceed the lump sum
  • Where applicable, bank interest certificates and evidence of scholarships or other income
  • Your tax identification number and details on marital status and residence

If a document is missing, first calculate with the lump sum. If you later document higher expenses, the return can be corrected within the deadline.

Worked example step by step

Assumption: in 2026 you work a part-time job with 12,000 euros gross annual pay. You are single, in tax class I, and have no other income. You do not claim higher work-related expenses.

  1. Gross annual pay: 12,000 euros, according to the payslips.
  2. Work-related expenses: you use the lump sum of 1,230 euros.
  3. Taxable income, simplified: 12,000 minus 1,230 gives 10,770 euros. Further deductions such as insurance contributions are left out here.
  4. Comparison with the basic allowance: 10,770 euros is below 12,348 euros. Income tax is therefore zero.
  5. Wage tax withheld during the year according to the payslips: assumption 900 euros.
  6. Refund: 900 euros, because the assessed income tax is zero.

Important: this calculation is a simplification. The provisional pension deduction, health insurance and the exact wage tax calculation lead to other figures. The result still shows how the principle works: the basic allowance decides whether there is any income tax at all.

Second example: when pay is higher

Assumption: in 2026 you earn 16,000 euros gross for the year. After the lump sum of 1,230 euros, 14,770 euros remain. This amount is above the basic allowance. The tax office then assesses income tax using the tariff of § 32a EStG. The refund is the difference between the wage tax withheld and this assessed tax. Often only a small amount remains. Whether the return pays off only becomes clear with your own figures.

This example shows why it is worth working through your own situation instead of hoping for a refund in general.

Check tax class and tax characteristics

A common reason for too much wage tax is an unfavourable tax class. If your employer does not have your tax identification number, tax class VI is often applied. This class leads to higher deductions. That is why it pays to check your tax identification number and your wage tax characteristics at the start of a job.

  • At the start of a job, check which tax class appears on your payslip.
  • If you have several employers, tax class VI is usual for the second job. This can lead to a refund at year end.
  • A mini-job can be taxed at a flat rate. In that case the tax class does not matter.

Frequently asked questions

How far back can I get wage tax back?

The assessment period for income tax is four years (§ 169 para. 2 AO). For tax year 2022 it ends on 31 December 2026. Older years have already expired. If you want to claim several years, handle the oldest returns first.

Do I need a return if my wage tax seems settled?

If you have only one source of income, the income tax return counts as an application for assessment (§ 46 para. 2 no. 8 EStG). Without that application, the withheld wage tax generally stays with the tax office.

What if I also had interest or a scholarship during the year?

Then the calculation becomes broader. Interest income and other receipts enter taxable income. The saver’s allowance and other allowances must be checked separately. A scholarship can be tax-free depending on its type, which is covered in our guide on scholarships and taxes (in German).

How long does processing take?

That depends on the workload of the tax office, and processing times vary widely. Submit the return complete so that no queries delay the processing.

Do I have to pay tax on the refund?

No. The refund is a return of tax paid in excess and not additional income. It does not affect your tax liability of the following year.

Next steps

  1. Collect the payslips and the wage tax certificate for the year.
  2. Work through your own calculation with the basic allowance and the lump sum, using the worked example.
  3. File the income tax return through ELSTER, with an application for assessment.
  4. Wait for the notice and check it for errors. If something differs, file an objection within the deadline.
