Study abroad in Senegal: the EHIC does not apply, visa rules from the Foreign Office, costs and funding with official sources, status October 2026.

According to the Federal Foreign Office, German citizens need no visa for stays of up to three months, and longer stays require a residence permit that you apply for on site. There is no travel warning for the whole country, but the Foreign Office advises against non-essential travel to several border regions. The DAAD uses a reference rate of 825 euros for students.

How are you insured in Senegal?

The European Health Insurance Card does not work in Senegal

The European Health Insurance Card applies in the EU member states, the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The European Commission does not name any African state in its FAQ on the card, so Senegal is not covered. Your statutory health insurance card therefore does not entitle you to treatment in Senegal, and care follows the local rules. Doctors may ask for full payment or an advance.

We found no documented social security agreement with Senegal that covers health insurance, so we do not name one. Before you leave, ask your health insurer in writing whether your coverage continues unchanged during the semester. The basics for statutory insured students are explained in our guide Health insurance during a semester abroad: what applies?.

The Foreign Office notes that doctors and hospitals in many countries expect bills to be settled before discharge or ask for an advance. For planned treatment it names Europe as the place to have it done. Plan enough money to cover a treatment until your insurer or your health fund reimburses the costs.

Private travel health insurance and repatriation

The European Health Insurance Card never replaces private travel health insurance. According to the European Commission, repatriation to Germany after a serious illness or an accident is not covered. The Foreign Office advises for Senegal a medical evacuation insurance and a check of whether your travel health policy covers an air ambulance flight to Germany. Background is in our guide Travel health insurance for Erasmus, the USA and work and travel.

Do you need a visa for Senegal?

For German citizens, the Foreign Office states that no visa is needed for stays of up to three months. Your return flight ticket and proof of accommodation are regularly requested at entry. For longer stays a residence permit is required, and you can apply for it on site. Fingerprints and a digital portrait photo may be taken on entry and exit.

Whether you need a different visa for study depends on the rules of the Senegalese diplomatic mission, and only that mission gives a binding answer. We do not state a rule of our own, because we found no official statement on it. The Foreign Office travel and safety notice for Senegal lists the entry rules for German citizens but does not mention study. The embassy of the Republic of Senegal in Germany can answer your questions.

For entry, the Foreign Office lists these points:

  • A passport, provisional passport or children’s passport that is valid for six months beyond the planned travel period. An identity card and a provisional identity card are not accepted.
  • A return flight ticket and proof of accommodation, which are regularly requested at entry.
  • A residence permit for stays longer than three months, which you can apply for on site.

According to the Foreign Office, there is no travel warning for the whole country (status of the page 25.10.2026). The page does advise against non-essential travel to the immediate border areas with Mali, to the department of Matam on the border with Mauritania, and to the immediate border areas with Gambia and Guinea-Bissau in the departments of Ziguinchor, Sédhiou and Kolda. After the dismissal of the prime minister on 22 May 2026, spontaneous gatherings may occur in Dakar and across the country. The page also warns of an Islamist terror threat in the Sahel region and of landmines in the border areas with Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.

What does a semester in Senegal cost?

Tuition fees

Which fees apply at the host university depends on your exchange agreement. We do not name a general amount because we found no official figure. Ask your home university and the host university before you accept an offer.

Living costs

We do not state a documented monthly amount for living costs. Ask your host university for its budget for exchange students.

The DAAD uses a scholarship rate of 825 euros for students in Senegal. This is a reference rate, not a budget. The DAAD list carries no date and gives the amount without a time period.

Funding: Erasmus+ and study abroad BAföG

Senegal appears in the list of the European Commission under the third countries that are not associated with the programme, in the region of Sub-Saharan Africa. The list names these countries only for certain actions and under certain conditions. Ask your international office whether an exchange with Senegal can be funded this way. More on planning is in our guide Planning a semester abroad: application, Erasmus and funding.

Study abroad BAföG is available for a partial study period abroad. According to the DSW allocation, the responsible office is the Studierendenwerk Ost:Brandenburg, Amt für Ausbildungsförderung. The leaflet names this office for Africa and Oceania without Australia and does not assign individual countries. It requires a permanent residence in Germany. The application should be filed about six months before the start, funding begins with the month of the application and at the earliest with the start of study. The leaflet covers tuition fees up to 5,600 euros, for one year at most. It gives no amount for the travel allowance or the health insurance supplement. More is in our guide Study abroad BAföG: eligibility, amounts and supplements.

For training outside the EU and Switzerland there is a monthly foreign supplement under the BAföG foreign supplement ordinance. The amount is a percentage that the Foreign Office sets. The country amounts are not in the text of the ordinance, so we do not state a euro sum for Senegal.

Cost example

For Senegal no documented fixed amount exists. The Foreign Office page names no visa fee. A cost example is therefore not possible. Living costs, host university fees, flights and travel health insurance can only be estimated with offers from your university and your insurer.

How to prepare before you leave

  1. Ask your health insurer in writing how you are insured during the semester, before you sign the study agreement with the host university.
  2. Take out travel health and repatriation insurance and check whether it covers an air ambulance flight to Germany.
  3. Check that your passport is valid for six months beyond the planned travel period.
  4. Prepare a return flight ticket and proof of accommodation for entry.
  5. For a stay longer than three months, plan the residence permit on site and clarify the requirements with your host university.
  6. Ask your home university which fees the exchange agreement covers, and ask the host university for its budget for exchange students.
  7. File the study abroad BAföG application with the Studierendenwerk Ost:Brandenburg about six months before the start, if you qualify.
  8. Get advice on vaccinations. The Foreign Office names yellow fever, hepatitis A and polio, and further ones depending on your situation. Keep routine vaccinations current, especially measles and rubella.
