Study Abroad in Armenia: Insurance, Visa, Costs 2026

Study abroad in Armenia: no EHIC cover, visa-free up to 180 days per year, study residence permit, costs with sourced facts, last updated October 2026.

Study abroad in Armenia: The European Health Insurance Card does not apply there, and we have not found a social security agreement with Armenia that covers health insurance. Up to 180 days per calendar year you need no visa. For study you apply for a temporary residence permit. Living costs and tuition fees are not sourced.

Armenia is neither an EU member state nor part of the European Economic Area, so your health insurance and visa follow different rules than inside the EU. The Federal Foreign Office also issues a partial travel warning for border areas with Azerbaijan.

How are you insured in Armenia?

European Health Insurance Card and social security agreement

According to the FAQ of the European Commission, the European Health Insurance Card applies in the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Armenia is not named there, so the EU rules on treatment under the conditions of the host country do not apply.

The website of the German Liaison Office for Health Insurance Abroad (DVKA) could not be reached for our check, and we found no agreement covering health insurance, so we name none. Ask your health insurance fund to confirm its arrangement for Armenia in writing. The basics of private cover are explained in the guide PKV für Studierende im Nicht-EU-Ausland (in German).

Advance payment, bills and repatriation cover

The Federal Foreign Office advises travel health and repatriation insurance for the whole stay. The fund should check whether a rescue flight to Germany is covered too. Treatment is usually paid in cash, and bills must sometimes be settled before discharge. According to the office, unpaid bills can lead to a refusal to leave the country.

Vaccinations and medical care

No vaccinations are required for direct entry from Germany. The office recommends hepatitis A vaccination, depending on the indication rabies and hepatitis B vaccinations, and current standard vaccinations, especially against measles. For longer stays in rural areas it names typhoid vaccination.

Private travel health insurance and repatriation

Your travel health and repatriation insurance should cover a rescue flight and repatriation. Which benefits you need depends on your contract, your university and the length of your stay. Background information is in the guide Travel health insurance for Erasmus, USA and work and travel (in German).

Do you need a visa for Armenia?

With a German passport you can stay visa-free for up to 180 days per calendar year, regardless of the purpose of your trip. The passport is required, an identity card is not sufficient. A damaged passport is refused. The documents must be valid beyond the trip, and the Federal Foreign Office names no fixed minimum period.

For a stay longer than 180 days, or any gainful employment, you must apply for an extension at the Central Passport and Visa Office in Yerevan well before the deadline. According to the office, the procedure is time-consuming. Anyone who stays longer than 180 days without permission faces a fine of 50,000 to 100,000 dram and a one-year entry ban.

For study the Migration Service names a temporary residence permit, issued for up to one year and extendable. The page lists these documents:

  • Application form, completed on site
  • Three colour photos, 35 x 45 mm
  • Copy of the passport with a certified Armenian translation
  • Evidence of the reason for stay
  • Medical certificate
  • Proof of payment of the state fee

The regular fee is 105,000 AMD. According to the page, it does not apply to foreign students, teaching staff and lecturers at educational institutions in Armenia. Processing takes 30 days and can be extended by another 30 days. You book an appointment online via migration.e-gov.am, one for each person. The Migration Service does not name health insurance or proof of funds for this permit.

The Federal Foreign Office issues a partial travel warning for Armenia. It warns against areas in the border region with Azerbaijan, for example east of Goris, parts of Tavush and Vayots Dzor and Ararat. Generally, using roads close to the Azerbaijani border is advised against. The border has not yet been fully defined, there are military restricted zones and a risk of landmines (status of the page 25 October 2026).

What does a study abroad semester in Armenia cost?

Tuition fees

Which fees apply at the host university depends on the exchange agreement of your home university. We do not name a general amount, because we have no official figure that we can cite. Ask your home university and the host university before you accept a place.

Living costs

We do not state a sourced monthly amount for living costs. Ask your host university for its budget for exchange students and for the costs of dormitory places. Without an official or university source we do not calculate a total.

Funding: Erasmus+ and Auslands-BAföG

Armenia appears in the Erasmus+ programme guide as a third country of the Neighbourhood East that is not associated with the programme. Funding is therefore possible only in certain actions. More on this in the guide Planning Erasmus and a semester abroad (in German).

According to the flyer of the German Student Services Organisation (status January 2026), Auslands-BAföG is possible for Armenia. The responsible office is the Studierendenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau, telephone 0371/5628-450. Outside the EU and Switzerland, funding covers at most two semesters, and at least one year of study in Germany is required beforehand. A study abroad period lasts at least six months. All details are in the guide Auslands-BAföG: requirements, amounts and supplements (in German).

How to prepare before you leave

  1. Ask your health insurance fund to confirm in writing how you are insured in Armenia before you sign the learning agreement.
  2. Take out a travel health and repatriation insurance that includes a rescue flight to Germany.
  3. Check that your passport is undamaged and valid beyond your trip.
  4. Ask your host university whether it supports your residence permit and which documents it needs from you.
  5. Have the copy of your passport translated and certified into Armenian before you apply.
  6. Clarify your vaccination status with your doctor. The Federal Foreign Office recommends hepatitis A vaccination.
  7. Book your residence permit appointment online via migration.e-gov.am, one appointment for each person.
  8. Submit your Auslands-BAföG application to the Studierendenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau about six months before your start, if you want funding.
