Definition. The basic tariff (Basistarif) is a tariff of private health insurance whose benefits match the scope of statutory health insurance. Every private health insurer offering full cover must offer it. The law governs access and ties it to fixed conditions. Comfort benefits such as a single room are not included.
What sets the basic tariff apart from other PKV tariffs
The basic tariff covers the medically necessary benefits that statutory health insurance also pays for. Additional comfort benefits such as a single room or treatment by the chief physician are not included. If you want more benefits, you choose a comfort tariff. The basic tariff is therefore more of a basic cover than a full tariff with all the advantages of private insurance.
Figures for 2026 and their sources
The fact base contains no premium for the basic tariff, because it varies by insurer and age. The compulsory insurance threshold serves as the reference point. For 2026 it is 6,450 euros per month and 77,400 euros per year. Employees below this threshold remain in statutory health insurance as compulsory members (GKV-Spitzenverband, fact sheet on calculation variables 2026).
An example for students
You want to be privately insured but value inexpensive basic cover. You compare the basic tariff with a comfort tariff and check which benefits matter to you. You also check whether your tariff can later be switched to another one without a new health check.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch from the basic tariff to a comfort tariff?
A switch within the same insurer is generally possible, and the tariff sets the conditions for the change. Ask beforehand whether a health check or waiting periods apply.
Is the basic tariff cheaper for students?
The basic tariff usually has a smaller range of benefits and can therefore be cheaper than a comfort tariff. Only a comparison of the specific offers shows whether this applies to you.
Must every insurer offer the basic tariff?
Private health insurers offering full cover are obliged to do so. Check with the insurer before you sign whether a particular tariff is on offer.
