Student insurance discounts matter less than many expect. For liability cover, the biggest saving for most students is not a discount but cover under their parents’ policy: it is usually free of charge as long as you are unmarried and in your first training. Some providers do offer real student discounts for contents, travel and entry-level policies, but amounts, age limits and conditions vary widely. Before comparing tariffs, check which insurances students need (in German) and which ones you can do without.
Key points at a glance
- Private liability insurance is usually included under your parents’ policy, as long as you are unmarried and in school or a directly following first training.
- The cover can end, for example with a late master’s, permanent employment or a legal traineeship (Referendariat). Some tariffs also set an age limit, such as 23.
- Statutory health insurance does not pay out for a medically necessary repatriation from abroad. Private travel health insurance is usual for that.
- Advertising that says “up to” with a percentage states maximum values. What matters is the annual premium for your exact cover.
Which insurances have student tariffs?
Some insurers offer student or entry-level tariffs for liability, contents, accident, legal expenses, occupational disability and travel insurance. Whether a discount applies and how long it lasts is set out in each provider’s terms.
| Insurance | What to check |
|---|---|
| Private liability | First clarify whether you are covered under your parents’ policy. Take out your own contract only if that cover ends. |
| Contents | Choose a sum insured that matches your actual contents. A sum that is too low can lead to reduced benefits in the event of a claim. |
| Travel and abroad | Territory, repatriation and duration of the trip. See the section below. |
| Motor | Whether student status lowers the premium at all depends on the provider. Typical factors are annual mileage, no-claims class and region. |
| Legal expenses | Compare benefit modules and waiting periods. More on legal expenses insurance for students (in German). |
| Occupational disability | Entry-level tariffs often have a low starting premium. Check how the premium develops later. |
Are there student insurance discounts for liability cover?
Some providers offer reduced liability tariffs for students. Before that, check whether you need your own contract at all: children are usually covered free of charge under their parents’ policy as long as they are unmarried and in school or in a first training that follows directly. This includes a full-time degree and a dual degree course.
The cover can end, for example if your master’s starts late after your bachelor’s, or if you take up permanent employment or a legal traineeship. Some providers limit the cover to an age, such as 23. The exact conditions are in your parents’ policy, so ask there. Whether a second training is still covered cannot be answered in general terms.
Is a contents discount for students worth it?
A student discount on contents insurance only makes sense if you have a noticeable amount of contents, such as a laptop, a bicycle and your own furnishings. If you live in a furnished room, there is often little to insure.
Focus less on the discount and more on the sum insured. If it is below the value of your contents, the insurer may pay less in the event of a claim. Also check whether bicycle theft is included, since depending on the tariff it is a separate module.
Do you need travel insurance as a student?
For longer stays abroad, yes. For short trips within Europe, it depends on the destination. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) applies in the EU countries as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and covers medically necessary care from the public system. Repatriation to Germany is not part of it: statutory health insurers do not pay for it (betanet advice portal).
In countries without an agreement, such as the USA, reimbursement is only limited. For semesters abroad and trips outside Europe, private travel health insurance is therefore usual. Check in the contract how long the cover lasts and whether repatriation is included.
How do you find insurance that is really cheaper?
Always compare the annual premium for the same scope of cover, not the discount percentage. A tariff with a high discount on a high standard price can be more expensive than a simple tariff without a discount.
If you want a second opinion, financial advice during your studies (in German) can help, provided you clarify the adviser’s remuneration and authorisation beforehand. Also check the notice periods: a contract that renews every year should be cancellable in good time.
Which sales offers should you avoid?
Be sceptical of tariffs that become significantly more expensive automatically after your studies without you being informed. The same applies to advisory contracts with fees that were not mentioned beforehand, pressure to sign at the first appointment, and packages that contain more modules than you need.
Frequently asked questions
Are there student discounts on insurance?
Yes, with individual providers and products, for example liability, contents or entry-level policies. There is no general statutory or industry-wide student discount. Whether you qualify is set out in the tariff conditions. You usually have to show an enrolment certificate.
Am I covered by my parents’ liability insurance?
Often yes, free of charge, as long as you are unmarried and in school or a first training that follows directly. If your master’s starts late, you are employed or you take up a traineeship, the cover may end. Ask your parents’ insurer for the exact conditions before you take out your own contract.
Is the European Health Insurance Card enough on holiday?
It covers medically necessary benefits of the public system in the participating countries, but not repatriation. In some countries with agreements, such as Turkey or Tunisia, it cannot be used yet; there, your health insurer provides a certificate of entitlement instead. For repatriation you need private travel health insurance.
Do student tariffs become more expensive after graduation?
That depends on the tariff. Some contracts end with your studies, others continue at a higher premium. So before you sign, read from when student status must be proven and what happens when it lapses.
How to proceed now
- Ask your parents whether your liability insurance is covered, and until when.
- Decide which risks you really need to insure: usually liability, contents depending on what you own, and cover abroad for trips.
- Compare annual premiums for the same scope of cover and check the notice periods.
- Have your student status and the rules after your studies confirmed in writing.
