Cancel Private Health Insurance as a Student: Deadlines, Steps and Template

When students can cancel private health insurance, which deadlines apply and why the proof of continuous cover decides whether the cancellation is valid.

You can cancel private health insurance on contracts with a term of more than one year at the end of the first or a later contract year, with three months’ notice. If you become compulsorily insured under statutory insurance, for example through a job, you cancel within three months, with effect back to the start of the obligation. What decides is the proof: for statutory insurance you document when it began, and when changing to another insurer you document uninterrupted continuous cover. Without it, the cancellation is not valid.

As a student, one point comes on top that is often overlooked. If you were exempted from compulsory insurance, cancelling does not bring you back into statutory insurance on its own. The exemption remains in place.

Key takeaways

  • The ordinary cancellation takes effect at the end of the first or a later contract year with three months’ notice, unless a longer minimum insurance period has been agreed.
  • If you become compulsorily insured under statutory insurance, you can cancel within three months, with effect back to the start of the obligation.
  • For a change of premium, there is a special right of termination of two months after receipt of the notice.
  • A policy that fulfils the insurance obligation can only be cancelled if uninterrupted continuous cover is proven.
  • The exemption from compulsory insurance cannot be revoked. Cancelling does not automatically return you to statutory student insurance.

When can you cancel your private health insurance?

The Insurance Contract Act (VVG) knows several grounds for termination. Which one fits depends on why you want to cancel.

ReasonDeadlineRequirement
Ordinary cancellationThree months to the end of the first or a later contract yearContract with a term of more than one year. An agreed minimum insurance period takes precedence.
Statutory insurance obligationWithin three months, with effect back to the start of the obligationProof of the obligation within two months of a written request from the insurer. A claim to family insurance is equivalent to the obligation.
Premium increaseTwo months after receipt of the notice, effective on the date of the planned changeContinuous cover must be proven.
Change to another insurerCancellation of the contract that fulfils the obligationEquivalent contract with the new insurer. Proof of uninterrupted cover must be submitted within two months of the cancellation.

Example: Your contract starts on 1 October 2026. Assumption: the contract year starts on the contract start date. The first contract year ends on 30 September 2027. The cancellation must then reach the insurer by 30 June 2027 at the latest. If a longer minimum insurance period applies, it takes precedence.

What applies to students who were exempted?

If you were exempted from compulsory insurance within three months of starting your studies, you are privately insured. The exemption cannot be revoked and generally applies for the entire course of study. Cancelling private health insurance therefore does not lead back into statutory student insurance. A switch into statutory insurance is normally only possible after the end of your studies, for example through employment subject to compulsory insurance. Narrow exceptions also include a second degree after an interruption of more than one month. A leave semester does not interrupt your studies.

A mini-job is not enough for a return. A working student job (Werkstudentenjob) with no more than 20 hours per week during the lecture period does not trigger compulsory health insurance either. The Consumer Advice Centre explains the rules for returning. How the application for exemption from statutory insurance (in German) works is described in a separate article. The route to a private policy is set out in the route into private health insurance (in German).

How to cancel private health insurance and switch to statutory insurance

The proof is the core of the cancellation. If it is missing or arrives late, the cancellation is, depending on the case, not valid.

Example: Max, 26, is privately insured due to an exemption, completes his studies and starts employment on 1 December 2026 with a salary below the compulsory insurance threshold of 77,400 euros per year. He becomes compulsorily insured under statutory insurance as a result. Max can cancel private health insurance within three months, that is by the end of February 2027, with effect back to 1 December. If the insurer requests proof in writing, Max must document the compulsory insurance within two months, otherwise the cancellation is not valid.

  1. Check whether and from when you become compulsorily insured under statutory insurance, and obtain confirmation from your health insurance fund.
  2. Choose the reason for cancellation and the deadline from the table above.
  3. Send the cancellation to your insurer in writing and keep proof of receipt, for example by registered letter.
  4. Submit proof of the new cover before the deadlines expire.
  5. Keep paying the private health insurance premium until the insurer has confirmed the cancellation.

Template for your cancellation letter

A cancellation letter can be short. What matters is that the insurer can clearly assign it to you and knows the reason for cancellation. The following elements belong in it.

  • Sender with full name, address and date of birth
  • Recipient with the name and address of your insurer
  • Subject line “Cancellation of my private health insurance” with your policy number
  • Date of cancellation, for example “at the earliest possible date” or a specific date
  • Reason for cancellation, such as the statutory insurance obligation from a specific date
  • Reference to the enclosed proof, for example the confirmation from the new health insurance fund
  • Request for written confirmation of the cancellation
  • Place, date and handwritten signature

One sentence for the core of the letter could read: “I hereby cancel my private health insurance with effect from the earliest possible date, or alternatively at the end of the contract year.” Add the reason for cancellation and enclose the proof of the new cover.

Special right of termination for a premium increase

If your insurer increases the premium, you can cancel within two months after receipt of the notice, effective on the date of the planned change. Check the notice immediately, because the deadline starts with receipt. For context: the insurer compares the required and the calculated benefits at least once a year. If the figure deviates by more than 10 percent, the premiums are reviewed and adjusted where necessary, although the tariff conditions may lower the threshold to 5 percent. An independent trustee must approve this.

Even with this special right of termination, a cancellation without continuous cover leaves you in a dangerous gap. If you only want to reduce the premium, first check a change of tariff.

How long are you bound to the private health insurance contract?

For contracts with a term of more than one year, the commitment ends at the earliest at the end of the first contract year. A longer minimum insurance period takes precedence. A long commitment does not guarantee stable premiums, because they can be adjusted. After a cancellation, taking out a new policy later means a new application with health questions.

What are the alternatives to cancelling?

  • Change of tariff: Under § 204 VVG you have a claim to switch to other tariffs with similar cover at your own insurer. Acquired rights and ageing reserves are credited. For additional benefits, the insurer may demand a risk surcharge, an exclusion of benefits or a waiting period. The guidelines of the PKV association describe the process.
  • Expectancy cover (Anwartschaft): If you want to return to private insurance later, an expectancy cover can secure your health status. The small expectancy cover secures the health status, the large one additionally the entry age. Reactivation usually takes place within two months after the reason has ceased. The expectancy cover costs an ongoing part of the tariff premium.
  • Help with payment problems: If you fall into arrears, reminders follow and, in the end, the emergency tariff (Notlagentarif). Under help with premium arrears (in German) you will find options before it gets that far.

If you later return to private insurance without an expectancy cover, the health assessment starts again from the beginning. How pre-existing conditions affect this is explained in our article on pre-existing conditions and private insurance (in German).

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel my private health insurance as a student?

Yes, but only under the statutory conditions. You cancel at the end of the contract year with three months’ notice, or for a special reason, for example due to a statutory insurance obligation or a premium increase. The continuous cover must be proven without gaps.

How much time do I have for the special right of termination?

For premium increases you can cancel within two months after receipt of the notice, effective on the date of the planned change. Check the date in your insurer’s letter immediately.

Can I switch to statutory student insurance after cancelling?

Not automatically. If you were exempted, you remain exempt, and the exemption cannot be revoked. A switch into statutory insurance is normally only possible after your studies have ended, for example through a job subject to compulsory insurance.

What happens if I do not send the proof on time?

If you cancel because of a statutory insurance obligation, the cancellation is not valid if you do not prove the obligation within two months of a written request, unless the missed deadline was not your fault. If you cancel a contract that fulfils the obligation, the continuous cover must be proven within two months of the cancellation.

How to proceed now

  1. Check your policy document for a minimum insurance period and find out when your contract year ends.
  2. Clarify whether a statutory insurance obligation or a premium increase supports the cancellation.
  3. Obtain confirmation of the new insurance before you cancel.
  4. Send the cancellation in a verifiable way and note all deadlines in your calendar.
