Student Legal Insurance: Do You Need It?

Student legal insurance: when it is worth it, which modules matter, and what to check about waiting periods and deductibles.

Student legal insurance is not a must for everyone, but it can make sense if you rent, work alongside your studies or travel a lot by bike and car. It covers lawyer and court costs if you end up in a legal dispute, but only in the areas you have chosen as modules. The order of protection still stays clear: health insurance, private liability and disability insurance come first, then legal insurance.

The key points in brief

  • There is no legal obligation to have legal insurance. It is a voluntary addition to the more important policies.
  • The policy pays lawyer and court costs, but only in the modules you have chosen: private, work, housing and transport.
  • A dispute that arose before the contract began is not covered. Some modules may have a waiting period, whose length is stated in the tariff.
  • The premium depends on modules, deductible and tariff. A fixed figure cannot be stated reliably.
  • For small disputes, a letter and advice often help. Legal insurance is mainly worth it for costly proceedings.

What does legal insurance pay and what does it not?

Legal insurance covers the costs incurred in enforcing or defending claims: lawyer and court fees and, depending on the tariff, further proceeding costs. Many providers add telephone legal advice. It does not win your case, it makes it affordable.

Not covered is anything that was already in dispute before the contract began. In addition, protection only applies to the areas your contract names. Whether, for example, a dispute with the university or the tax office is included differs from tariff to tariff. Anyone in a dispute with the tax office, for example over deducted costs in a second degree, should check whether a tax module is included. The basics are in the article on taxes during your studies (in German).

Do you need student legal insurance?

It depends on your life situation. The more contracts, potential for conflict and money at stake in your everyday life, the more worthwhile the protection.

Your situationAssessment
You rent or live in a shared flat with your own tenancy agreementCheck the housing module; disputes over deposit, service charges and defects are common
You work part-time or do an internshipCheck the work module, especially for fixed-term contracts, dismissal and pay
You drive a car or often cycleCheck the transport module, even if you do not own a vehicle
You shop online a lot and have several ongoing contractsCheck the private module
You live with your parents, have no job and few contractsLegal insurance is dispensable; ask your parents about a family policy

Legal insurance comes further down the list of priorities. If you are sorting your budget, start with private liability insurance during your studies (in German), then secure disability insurance for students (in German) and only then think about legal insurance. An overview of all policies is in insurance for students (in German).

Which modules are relevant for students?

Legal insurance is sold in modules. You choose the areas you want to protect and pay more or less accordingly. The names differ from provider to provider.

Private legal protection

It covers disputes from everyday private life that are neither work-related nor traffic-related. Typical cases are a faulty laptop bought online, a dispute with the mobile provider or the gym over a contract.

Employment legal protection for part-time jobs and internships

The work module helps with disputes with the employer, for example over dismissal, a reference or pay. With internships there are clear rules: a compulsory internship under the study or examination regulations is exempt from the minimum wage. For a voluntary internship, the statutory minimum wage of 13.90 € gross per hour applies once it lasts longer than three months, and retroactively if it is extended. After graduation the minimum wage applies even for up to three months (information from the University of Göttingen on the minimum wage for internships). From 1 January 2027 the minimum wage rises to 14.60 €.

Example: Tim, 23, does a voluntary five-month internship and is paid a flat sum that is well below the minimum wage. He first clarifies the situation in conversation with the company. If that gets nowhere, employment legal protection can cover the costs of a lawyer, provided the legal insurance was already in place when the dispute began and no waiting period is still running.

Tenancy legal protection: housing and shared flats

The housing module, called tenancy legal protection by some providers, covers disputes with the landlord. This includes getting back the deposit, the service charge statement, defects in the flat or a termination. For conflicts between flatmates, it depends on the conditions, so check this explicitly in the tariff.

Example: Mara, 22, paid a 900 € deposit, and after moving out the landlord keeps 400 €. The amount in dispute is small. Here, a written objection often helps first, along with advice from the tenants’ association or your university’s legal advice service, where offered. Legal insurance is mainly worth it when things get more expensive and a lawyer or court is needed.

Traffic legal protection

It helps with disputes after an accident, with fines and with defects in a vehicle you have bought. Even without your own car, it is worth looking at the conditions: some tariffs cover you as a pedestrian, cyclist and passenger, others tie protection to a specific vehicle.

How long is the waiting period for legal insurance?

The waiting period is the time after the contract starts during which there is no cover for certain modules. Its length and the areas it applies to are set by each tariff. The exact duration is in the policy conditions; there is no standard figure.

The consequence matters: if a dispute arises during the waiting period or even before it, the insurer does not pay. So take out legal insurance before a conflict is in sight, not only once the landlord keeps the deposit or the employer gives notice.

What does legal insurance cost for students?

The premium depends mainly on the modules chosen, the deductible and the provider. A fixed figure cannot be given, because premiums vary considerably between tariffs.

  • Modules: The more areas you insure, the higher the premium. Limit yourself to the areas where you really have risk.
  • Deductible: It lowers the premium, but means that you pay part of the costs yourself in a dispute. With small amounts in dispute, this can almost cancel out the benefit of the policy.
  • Family policy: Ask your parents whether there is a legal insurance contract for the family and whether you are covered under it. This may save you a separate contract.
  • Benefits before price: A cheap tariff without a housing module helps little if that is exactly where you get into a dispute.

What should you check when you take out a policy?

  • Waiting period: Read the length and the modules affected in the conditions.
  • Choice of lawyer: Check whether you may choose your lawyer freely.
  • Scope of cover: Which areas of law are included, and which are expressly excluded, for example disputes with the university or the tax office?
  • Pre-contract cases: What arose before the contract began is not insured.
  • Deductible: Amount and number of cases per year.

Frequently asked questions

Is student legal insurance worth it?

It can be, if you rent, work alongside your studies or spend a lot of time in traffic. There is no obligation, and in the order of priorities it comes after health insurance, private liability and disability insurance. If you live with your parents and have few contracts, you can often do without it.

How long is the waiting period for legal insurance?

Each tariff sets this itself. The waiting period only applies to individual modules, and its length is stated in the policy conditions. Disputes that arise during the waiting period or before the contract began are not covered. So take out the policy before a conflict emerges.

Does legal insurance cover disputes with the landlord?

Only if your contract includes a housing or tenancy module and the dispute arose after the contract began and after any waiting period. The insurer then covers lawyer and court costs, minus any agreed deductible. Typical points of contention are the deposit, the service charge statement, defects and termination.

Does legal insurance also apply to part-time jobs or internships?

Yes, if you chose the work module. It helps with disputes with the employer, for example over dismissal or pay. On the minimum wage for internships there are clear rules: a voluntary internship longer than three months must be paid at least 13.90 € gross per hour; a compulsory internship under the study regulations is exempt.

What does student legal insurance cost?

That depends on the modules, the deductible and the tariff; there is no reliable flat figure. Get several quotes and compare the scope of cover first, then the premium. Also ask your parents whether there is a family policy you are covered under.

What to do now

  1. Check whether your parents have a legal insurance policy and whether you are covered under it.
  2. Decide which areas matter to you: housing, work, transport or private life.
  3. Read the waiting period, deductible and exclusions in the offers before you look at the price.
  4. Take out the policy while no dispute is in sight, and first clarify the more important policies such as liability and disability insurance.
  5. If you want to talk through your situation, you will find the way to advice on the Academycon homepage (in German).

You can find reviews of us on ProvenExpert, Trustlocal and Trustindex. Academycon was mentioned, among other things, in a report in VersicherungsJournal. A full list of mentions is on the press page (in German).
