Disability insurance for students (occupational disability insurance, Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) can be taken out during your studies, long before your first job. The premium depends mainly on your age, your health and your chosen career. The statutory reduced earning capacity pension requires a waiting period of 5 years and 3 years of compulsory contributions in the last 5 years. If you have not met this yet, you would have no such pension in an emergency, and that is exactly what private occupational disability insurance is for.
The most important points at a glance
- Occupational disability insurance can be taken out from your teenage years and during school, studies or training. Age, health and choice of career affect the premium.
- The statutory reduced earning capacity pension requires 5 years of waiting period and 3 years of compulsory contributions in the last 5 years before reduced earning capacity sets in.
- An occupational disability pension and the statutory reduced earning capacity pension do not rule each other out and are not offset against each other.
- You must answer the health questions in the application completely and truthfully.
- Many providers offer entry-level tariffs with a low starting premium. The Verbraucherzentrale (German consumer advice centre) advises against tariffs where the premium rises for the same benefits.
Is disability insurance for students worth it?
It is worth it if you want to live off your ability to work later and nobody else secures your income. During your studies, that is the normal situation. Occupational disability insurance pays a monthly pension if health reasons prevent you from practising your profession. Whether it pays and for how long is set out in the contract terms and in the assessment when a claim is made.
An early start has advantages, because age and state of health influence both the premium and acceptance. Both can change with every year and every new diagnosis. On the other side, you pay the premium for years without a fixed income from a job. So plan the premium firmly into your budget before you sign.
Disability insurance is not the first insurance you need. Health insurance comes first, because it is compulsory. Which other cover matters during your studies is shown in the insurance overview for students (in German).
Does the statutory reduced earning capacity pension pay in an emergency?
The statutory reduced earning capacity pension is only paid if the requirements of German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) are met: 5 years of general waiting period and 3 years of compulsory contributions in the last 5 years before reduced earning capacity sets in. The pension insurer does not name a special rule for students. What matters is whether you have already built up these periods.
Compulsory contributions arise, for example, from a working student job, because pension insurance is always compulsory there. A mini-job is also subject to pension insurance unless you opt out. An exemption can cost you protection against reduced earning capacity, so consider this before you apply for it.
| Feature | Statutory reduced earning capacity pension | Private occupational disability insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays? | German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) | The private insurer |
| Requirement | 5 years waiting period, 3 years of compulsory contributions in the last 5 years | Contract signed and health check passed |
The Verbraucherzentrale Rheinland-Pfalz points out in its questions and answers on occupational disability insurance that the two benefits do not rule each other out.
What does disability insurance for students cost?
A flat sum would be misleading, because the premium varies from person to person. Age, state of health and choice of career affect it. Added to that are the amount of the insured pension, the term and the quality of the conditions.
| Factor | Effect on the premium |
|---|---|
| Age at signing | The younger you are, the cheaper the entry |
| State of health | Pre-existing conditions can raise the premium or lead to exclusions |
| Choice of career or course | The insurer assesses the risk of the intended career |
| Amount of pension | The higher the monthly pension, the higher the premium |
| Term | The longer the cover runs, the more expensive it is |
Many providers offer entry-level tariffs with a low starting premium. Check how the premium develops later on. Tariffs marked “t.e.” mean that the premium rises for the same benefits, and the Verbraucherzentrale advises against them. Discounts alone are no reason to choose a tariff, and more on this can be found in our article on student tariffs at insurers (in German).
Always compare offers with the same pension, the same term and the same conditions. Otherwise you are comparing prices for different benefits.
How high should the occupational disability pension be?
The pension should cover your ongoing costs. To work this out, calculate your monthly needs.
Example with assumed figures: Lea, 24, is studying for a master’s degree and needs €450 a month for rent, €250 for food and household, €150 for insurance, €60 for transport, €40 for study materials and €200 for leisure and other costs. That adds up to €1,150. A pension of this size would cover her current standard of living.
After your studies, income and expenses change. That is why the follow-up guarantee is important, more on this below. Exact pension levels and upper limits for students vary between insurers and are set out in the conditions.
How does the health check for disability insurance work?
In the application you answer questions about illnesses, treatments and therapies in the past. The Verbraucherzentrale advises answering all application questions completely. Incorrect or incomplete information can jeopardise your insurance cover when you make a claim.
- Request your records from your GP and specialists in advance, so that you can name dates and diagnoses precisely.
- Include treatments that seem harmless to you if the application asks about them.
- If you have pre-existing conditions, you can ask anonymously before applying how insurers would assess your risk. That way you know which insurers are likely to accept an application before you submit one.
Pre-existing conditions can lead to surcharges, exclusions or a refusal. The earlier you sign, the shorter the medical history that is asked about, as a rule.
What is the follow-up guarantee?
With the follow-up guarantee you can increase the insured pension later without answering health questions again. This suits studying, because your income changes after you graduate. Which occasions count and up to what amount you may increase the cover is set out in the conditions. Common occasions include graduation, your first job after your studies (in German) or changes in your family. Whether your contract includes them has to be checked in each case.
When you receive an offer, ask specifically how long the guarantee applies and whether it is tied to fixed events or to a particular deadline.
What is the difference between occupational disability and reduced earning capacity?
Occupational disability is the term used in private insurance. It is linked to your profession as the contract terms define it, for students depending on the contract either to the course of study or to the intended career. Reduced earning capacity is the term used in statutory pension insurance. There the requirements of German Pension Insurance apply, as described above.
Because the terms are defined differently, a person may be entitled under one rule and not under the other in an individual case. There is no general answer to this. In an actual claim, the respective assessment decides.
What should you look for in the conditions?
- Abstract referral: Good conditions do not refer you to any other activity at random.
- Definition during studies: Read how the contract defines occupational disability during your studies and for your intended career.
- Review: The insurer may review an ongoing claim. The criteria should be clearly described.
- Indexation: An adjustment of the pension or the premium partly offsets the loss of purchasing power.
- Term: The term should match your planned working life.
Does this also apply to dual students and graduates?
Yes, the basic logic is the same: age, health and choice of career determine the premium and acceptance. Whether a dual course is classed as study or as vocational training, and which occupational group the insurer applies, can differ. Ask about this explicitly when you receive an offer.
For prospective graduates too, the occupation stated in the application counts. State it truthfully and check in the conditions whether you have to report a later change of occupation, and if so, when.
Frequently asked questions
From what age can I take out occupational disability insurance as a student?
According to the Verbraucherzentrale, you can take it out from your teenage years and during school, studies or training. Age, state of health and choice of career affect the premium. An early start is therefore often cheaper, but there is no fixed date by which you must sign.
What does disability insurance for students cost per month?
There is no universal figure. The premium depends on age, state of health, choice of career, pension amount and term. Entry-level tariffs often have a low starting premium, but check how it develops. Offers can only be sensibly compared with the same pension and term.
Do I need occupational disability insurance if I am entitled to a reduced earning capacity pension?
That depends on whether the statutory pension covers your needs. Both benefits do not rule each other out and are not offset against each other. The statutory pension requires 5 years of waiting period and 3 years of compulsory contributions in the last 5 years. German Pension Insurance checks whether you meet these requirements.
What should I do if I have pre-existing conditions?
Answer the health questions completely and have your risk assessed anonymously before you apply. That way you find out in advance which insurers are likely to accept an application. Whether you are insured and on what terms is ultimately decided by the insurer.
What you should do now
- Calculate your monthly needs and set a target pension.
- Check which premium your budget can carry in the long term.
- Gather your health records and, if you have pre-existing conditions, have a risk assessment requested anonymously.
- Compare offers with the same pension and term, and pay attention to the follow-up guarantee and to the absence of abstract referral.
- When you start your career, review your cover again.
