Dr. or Ph.D.: Which Doctoral Title You May Use in Germany

Doctoral title in Germany: when you may use Dr., what applies to a foreign Ph.D. and why you must not use both abbreviations at the same time.

In short

The doctoral title in Germany depends on where your degree comes from. A German doctorate may be used as “Dr.” with the subject addition awarded by the faculty, and only after the doctoral certificate has been handed over. A Ph.D. obtained abroad may be used as “Dr.” without a subject addition or in its original form, depending on the country of origin. Using both abbreviations at the same time is not permitted.

When may I use my doctoral title in Germany?

You may only use the title once the doctorate has been completed with the handing over of the doctoral certificate. What counts is therefore the formal completion, not just passing the examination. A model framework doctoral regulation sets out this completion. Until you have the certificate, there is no formal basis for using the title, even if your thesis has already been assessed. If in doubt, ask the doctoral office of your faculty.

What does the agreement of the German states say?

The German states set out in the agreement “Principles for the use of foreign academic degrees” how foreign degrees may be used in Germany. The version of 20 November 2025 distinguishes four points that are relevant to you:

  1. Point 1: Academic degrees from EU and EEA states may be used in their original form without an indication of origin. The rule does not apply to degrees from the northern part of Cyprus.
  2. Point 2: For doctoral degrees from EU and EEA states, you may use “Dr.” without a subject addition and without an indication of origin instead of the original abbreviation. The rule only applies to doctorates.
  3. Point 3: A separate rule with an indication of origin applies to certain Russian candidate degrees.
  4. Point 4: For doctoral degrees from the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel and Japan, you may use “Dr.” without a subject addition or the original abbreviation.

Point 2 contains three restrictions that are often overlooked with Ph.D. degrees. First, professional doctorates are excluded, that is, degrees awarded without doctoral studies and a doctoral procedure. For these, the original form under point 1 applies instead. Second, the option is only provided for degrees that correspond to the third level of the Bologna classification under the law of the country of origin. Third, double use is prohibited. The agreement refers to the abbreviation of origin under the 2000 resolution, not explicitly to the word “Ph.D.” alone.

What applies to a foreign Ph.D.?

A Ph.D. is often a research doctorate that, alongside your own research, frequently includes teaching. Whether it may be used as “Dr.” in Germany depends on the country of origin and the type of degree. USA degrees have a special feature: the awarding university must be classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university, for example as “Research 1”, “Research 2” or “Research Colleges and Universities”. You can check the classification on the university website or via the Carnegie classification itself.

If your degree comes from a state not named in the agreement, the rule does not apply automatically. In this case, recognition is decided on a case-by-case basis. The anabin database of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) classifies foreign academic degrees and is the first step in your research. However, it does not provide a binding decision for your case.

Which form should I use in applications?

Choose one form and stick to it. Your CV, email signature, business card and application documents should all use the same spelling. A German doctorate should not simply be translated into a Ph.D., because it is a different degree. The Ph.D. is widespread internationally. The German doctorate is the form that personnel managers in Germany read directly from the title. Which form your environment expects is best learned in conversation with your supervisors or colleagues in your field.

  • For careers abroad and in international research, the original form of the Ph.D. is preferable, because it is common there.
  • For positions in Germany, the form “Dr.” with a subject addition is the one that readers here can classify directly.

An example for your CV: “Dr. rer. nat., [university], 2026” for a German doctorate, or “Ph.D. in [subject], [university], 2026” for a Ph.D. from the USA, if the Carnegie classification fits. You use the form “Dr.” without a subject addition only if the requirements of the agreement are clearly met. When in doubt, the original form is the safe choice.

How do I use the title correctly?

The German doctorate includes the subject addition, for example Dr. rer. nat. or Dr. rer. pol. The abbreviation stays the same regardless of whether the title was awarded in the masculine or feminine form. Honorary doctorates carry the addition h. c. Our glossary article on doctoral title abbreviations explains the complete list.

How should I proceed?

Check whether the doctoral certificate has been handed over before you use the title. For foreign degrees, determine the country of origin, the university and the degree, for example with the anabin database. Assign the degree to the agreement: EU and EEA states under point 1 or 2, USA, Canada and other states under point 4. Choose one form for your CV, business card and application and use it consistently. Avoid translations that suggest a different degree. For the USA, check the Carnegie classification of the awarding university before you rely on the easing rule.

What happens if I use the title too early?

Anyone who uses the title before the doctoral certificate has been handed over uses it without a formal basis. The consequences are regulated by the university and state law. In such cases, the safe route is a note to the doctoral office. For a binding assessment of your individual case, contact the university or a legal adviser. This article does not replace them.

Frequently asked questions

When may I use my doctoral title?

Only after the doctoral certificate has been handed over.

May I describe a German doctorate as a Ph.D.?

Sources advise against it. Translating a German doctorate into a Ph.D. is considered inappropriate, because it is a different degree.

May I use Dr. and Ph.D. at the same time?

No. Using the Dr. abbreviation and the abbreviation of origin together is not permitted under the agreement of the German states.

Can a foreign Ph.D. be used as Dr.?

Depending on the country of origin, yes. The option does not apply to professional doctorates or degrees below the third Bologna level. The university or anabin will clarify the individual case.
