What the difference means in euros

The figures refer to a contribution base of €855 per month, which applies to students from October 2024.

  1. Announcement 2025 at 2.5%: €855 × 2.5% = €21.38 per month.
  2. Actual average in 2025 at 2.9%: €855 × 2.9% = €24.80 per month.
  3. Difference: €24.80 minus €21.38 = €3.42 per month.

The announced rate is a forecast. Health insurers set their additional contribution according to their own needs, so the actual value is above the announcement in some years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the announcement and the actual average?

The Federal Ministry of Health sets the announcement on the basis of the estimation panel. The actual average shows what the insurers levy on average. Both values can differ, as 2025 shows with 2.5% and 2.9%.

Do I have to pay the average rate?

No. Each health insurer sets its own additional contribution. The average serves as a guide and for the federal calculation.

Does the rate also apply to my health insurer?

Not necessarily. You will find the rate of your insurer in the list of health insurers published by the GKV-Spitzenverband and in our article Additional contributions 2026 for students (in German).

What is the additional contribution rate for 2027?

The estimation panel expects 2.9%. The official determination by the Federal Ministry of Health in the Federal Gazette is still pending and was announced for 1 November 2026.
