The pension deduction (Rentenabschlag) reduces your old-age pension if you start it before the standard retirement age. It is 0.3 percent for every month you retire earlier and applies for the entire time the pension is paid. It is not a penalty but an actuarial adjustment, because the pension is paid for longer.

This guide explains the legal basis in section 77 of Book VI of the Social Code (SGB VI), works through three examples and shows what career starters should keep in mind.

In short: Anyone who starts an old-age pension early gets a deduction of 0.3 percent per month (access factor 0.003 lower than 1.0, section 77(2) SGB VI). Four years before the standard retirement age of 67, that means 14.4 percent less pension. Starting later earns a supplement of 0.5 percent per month (last updated: November 2026).

Key points

  • The deduction is 0.3 percent per month of early claiming, which is 3.6 percent per year.
  • Retiring later earns 0.5 percent per month if the qualifying period is met.
  • For birth years from 1964, the standard retirement age is 67. You count the months from there.
  • For disability pensions, a deduction of 0.3 percent per month before age 65 applies, with special rules from age 62.
  • The pension commission recommends changes for early retirement. So far, these are only recommendations.

How high is the pension deduction?

The size of the deduction follows from the access factor (Zugangsfaktor) in section 77 SGB VI. The factor determines how many of your personal earnings points enter the pension formula. For an old-age pension that starts when the standard retirement age is reached, the factor is 1.0. For a pension claimed early, it is set 0.003 lower than 1.0 for each calendar month. That equals 0.3 percent per month and 3.6 percent per year.

The law also covers the opposite direction. If you do not claim the pension after reaching the standard retirement age despite having met the qualifying period, the factor rises by 0.005 per calendar month. That is 0.5 percent per month or 6 percent per year. How the five-year qualifying period is met is explained in our guide to the five-year qualifying period (in German).

Which retirement age is the starting point?

The deduction is always counted from the standard retirement age (Regelaltersgrenze). For people born on or after 1 January 1964 it is 67. For older cohorts, section 235 SGB VI provides a gradual increase from 65 to 67. For the 1963 cohort the limit is 66 years and 10 months. The full table is in our guide to the standard retirement age of 67 (in German).

The pension for long-term insured persons requires 35 insurance years and is currently possible from age 63, but with deductions. That is how the federal government describes it in its pension reform FAQ of 2 July 2026. The deduction-free pension for particularly long-term insured persons requires 45 insurance years.

What does retiring early cost in numbers?

The table shows the deduction for a standard retirement age of 67. It only calculates the deduction and ignores that retiring earlier also means fewer contribution years.

643610.8 percent0.892

66123.6 percent0.964

Example with assumptions: at the standard retirement age you would be entitled to 1,500 euros a month. If you start four years earlier at 63, the 14.4 percent deduction cuts the amount by 216 euros to 1,284 euros a month. This is a simplified calculation. The actual amount depends on your earnings points and the current pension value, and the deduction in principle applies for life. Your personal figure comes from the pension statement of the German Pension Insurance.

Does the deduction also apply to disability pensions?

Yes, but under its own logic. For pensions due to reduced earning capacity and for child-rearing pensions (Erziehungsrenten), the access factor is 0.003 lower for each month before the 65th birthday. If such a pension begins before age 62, age 62 is used for the factor. Periods of drawing a pension before age 62 do not count as early claiming. For survivors’ pensions, the factor is reduced by 0.003 per month from the death until the insured person would have turned 65. For pensions based on 40 years of certain periods, section 77(4) SGB VI substitutes age 63 for 65 and age 60 for 62.

What does the pension commission recommend on early retirement?

The pension commission handed over 33 recommendations on 23 June 2026. On early retirement it recommends abolishing the deduction-free pension for particularly long-term insured persons after 45 insurance years and raising the age limit for the pension with deductions for long-term insured persons from 63 to 64, then in line with the standard retirement age. According to the federal government, all proposals are only recommendations. On 2 July 2026 the coalition committee declared that it wants to implement them fully and swiftly, but no bill is mentioned there. So nothing is decided. Keep an eye on developments, especially if you plan an early retirement in the coming decades.

What does this mean for your planning as a career starter?

For most career starters, retirement is far in the future. The rules on deductions may change by then, but the access factor has long been part of pension law. If you want to stop working earlier, you can bridge the gap with additional provision. The Altersvorsorgedepot, occupational provision and private savings are building blocks. The hub Altersvorsorge 2027 (in German) gives an overview. How a pension application works is explained in Rentenantrag stellen (in German).

Frequently asked questions

How many percent is the deduction per month?

When an old-age pension is claimed early, the access factor falls by 0.003 per month. That is 0.3 percent of the pension per month and 3.6 percent per year.

Is the pension deduction permanent?

The deduction works through the access factor on your personal earnings points and thus on the amount of your pension. It is not lifted after the start. In individual cases the German Pension Insurance can advise.

Can I avoid deductions?

A later start avoids them. If you only start after the standard retirement age, you even receive 0.5 percent per month extra. For the pension after 45 insurance years, other rules apply under current law.

Is 67 always the standard age for birth years from 1964?

Yes, for people born on or after 1 January 1964 the standard retirement age is 67 under current law. A possible increase after 2031 has so far only been recommended by the pension commission.

Where do I find my personal deduction?

The pension statement of the German Pension Insurance and its pension calculator give you an overview. When you apply, the pension insurance provider calculates the access factor with binding effect.

What to do next

  1. Determine your standard retirement age from your birth year.
  2. Count the months between your planned start and the standard retirement age and multiply by 0.3 percent.
  3. Request a pension statement from the German Pension Insurance and compare it with your expectation.
  4. Check whether additional provision can close a gap before the standard retirement age. If you would like a personal assessment, you can get advice from Academycon (in German).
