Applying for BAföG retroactively is generally not possible: the statute ties the start of funding to the month in which you submit the application. This guide explains what section 15(1) BAföG says, why the application month matters, what applies when the office takes long to decide, and how to avoid a gap from the start.
In short: Under section 15(1) BAföG, funding starts with the month in which training begins, at the earliest with the month of application. There is no BAföG for months before the application month. If you start studying in October but apply only in December, funding starts in December at the earliest. Last updated: November 2026.
Key points
- The start of funding depends on the application month, not on the start of your studies. Section 15(1) BAföG is decisive.
- An early application secures the month. The wording means that the application month is the first possible funding month if the training has already started.
- If processing takes long, the office can pay advance payments under section 51(2) BAföG. They are subject to recovery.
- The study start grant (Studienstarthilfe) follows its own deadline: the application must be filed by the end of the month after training begins (section 56(3) BAföG).
- If you want to clarify eligibility in principle, you can request a preliminary decision under section 46(5) BAföG. It does not replace the actual application.
From when does funding count?
Section 15(1) BAföG sets the start of funding: it starts with the month in which training begins, at the earliest with the month of application. That has two consequences. If your studies begin in October and you apply in the same month, funding runs from October. If you apply later, the start moves to the month of application.
Under section 46(1) BAföG, the application is submitted in writing or electronically and, under subsection 2, addressed to the locally responsible office (Amt für Ausbildungsförderung). Who is responsible is explained in finding your BAföG office (in German).
What does this look like in a worked example?
Assumption: your winter semester starts on 1 October 2026. After reviewing income and assets, the office would grant you 400 euros per month. The table shows what the timing of your application means for the start of funding.
| Application filed in | Earliest start of funding | Months without funding (assumption: studies from October) | Calculated difference at 400 euros per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | October 2026 | none | 0 euros |
| November 2026 | November 2026 | October | 400 euros |
| December 2026 | December 2026 | October and November | 800 euros |
| January 2027 | January 2027 | October to December | 1,200 euros |
The 400 euros are purely an assumption to show the principle. Your actual amount is determined by the office from need, income and assets. The logic is what matters: every month before the application month is lost for funding, even if all requirements had been met.
Are there exceptions or alternatives?
Section 15(1) BAföG does not provide for general retroactivity beyond the application month. There are, however, rules that answer similar questions in practice:
- Advance payment in case of delay: if, for a first application in a training stage or after an interruption, the office cannot decide within six calendar weeks or cannot pay within ten calendar weeks, section 51(2) BAföG provides advance payments for four months. They amount to at most four fifths of the expected need and are subject to recovery.
- Preliminary decision in principle: under section 46(5) BAföG, the office decides on request whether the funding requirements are met for a specific training, for example training abroad, under section 7(1a), further or other training, or after exceeding the age limit. The decision applies to the entire training stage but no longer binds the office if the training does not begin within one year of the application.
- Parents do not pay: if maintenance fails, a different route applies. See advance payment under BAföG (Vorausleistung) (in German).
The preliminary decision under section 46(5) clarifies whether the requirements are met in principle. It is not a tool for obtaining an earlier start of funding. Whether an informal or still incomplete application secures the application month is decided by the office in each case. If you are unsure, ask there before the month ends.
What applies to the study start grant?
The study start grant has its own deadline, which should not be confused with the BAföG application month. Under section 56(3) BAföG, the application can be filed until the end of the month after training begins, electronically through BAföG Digital. If your studies begin in October, the end of November is the limit. How the deadlines work in detail is covered in Studienstarthilfe beantragen: Die Fristen (in German). If you missed it, see Studienstarthilfe: Frist verpasst (in German).
How do you avoid a gap with the follow-up application?
The application month matters not only for the first application. When an assessment period ends, funding should continue without a break. You find the period in your latest notice. How long a notice applies is covered in BAföG-Bewilligungszeitraum (in German), and the follow-up process in BAföG-Folgeantrag online stellen (in German). File early enough that processing can start before the old period ends. The Studentenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz explicitly mentions uploading documents retrospectively. More on this in uploading BAföG documents (in German).
What does the BAföG reform change?
The government draft of the 30th BAföG Amendment Act (Bundestag document 21/8405) provides that from 1 April 2027 the application is filed only through BAföG Digital. The bill has not been passed; the first reading in the Bundestag took place on 15 October 2026. Until it is promulgated, the current rules apply. Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for BAföG for past semesters?
Under section 15(1) BAföG there is no funding for periods before the application month. An application filed today takes effect at the earliest from the current month.
Does the whole month count if I apply at the end of it?
By its wording, funding starts at the earliest with the application month, not the application day. How the office treats the month in your case is shown in the notice, which states the assessment period.
What if the office takes a long time to issue the notice?
Funding is granted for the period from the start of funding even if the notice arrives later. In addition, under section 51(2) BAföG an advance payment can be made in case of delays, subject to recovery.
Does an objection help if I applied too late?
An objection does not change the statutory rule. Instead, check in your notice whether the office has applied the application month correctly. For reading the notice, see BAföG-Bescheid verstehen (in German).
What to do now
- File the application immediately, even if documents are still missing, so that the application month is fixed.
- Submit missing documents through BAföG Digital or the route named by the office.
- Keep proof of when you applied, for example the confirmation in the portal.
- Check the assessment period and the start of funding in your notice.
- Note the date for the follow-up application before the assessment period ends.
