The Wehrdienst questionnaire can be completed online. The Bundeswehr encloses a QR code with its covering letter that leads straight to the online form. If you meet the deadline and answer carefully, you avoid follow-up letters and a reminder. This guide walks through the process step by step.
Short answer: You complete the military service questionnaire (Wehrdienst-Fragebogen) online using the QR code in the covering letter. The code leads to the online form on deinwehrdienst.de. You have one month. Afterwards a reminder by registered mail sets a new deadline of two weeks. After submitting, you receive a digital confirmation. Source status: Bundeswehr, 19 December 2025. Status of this guide: November 2026.
The key points at a glance
- Submission takes place online using the QR code in the covering letter.
- The deadline is one month to complete and return the questionnaire.
- After submitting, you receive a digital confirmation.
- A lost letter or QR code can be requested again, and the deadlines continue to run.
- For women and people registered with another gender, the questionnaire is voluntary.
What the questionnaire asks
The questionnaire for military registration (Wehrerfassung) covers two things: your interest in service and your basic, above all health related, fitness. The Bundeswehr explicitly describes this as the first step of its process. Only after that comes an invitation to a Karrierecenter for a medical examination (Musterung) or an assessment.
Completing the form therefore does not decide your service. The answers do form the basis for the next steps, however. It is worth going through the questions calmly before you open the online form.
Getting to the online form
You will find the QR code in the covering letter. The Bundeswehr sends it to male citizens who turn 18 and are subject to conscription. Persons with dual citizenship also receive the letter, as long as they still hold German citizenship. The code leads to the online form on deinwehrdienst.de.
The questionnaire is sent to German citizens from birth year 2008 onwards after their 18th birthday. If you belong to this cohort, expect the letter in good time rather than searching for it once the deadline is already running.
If you want to see the questions beforehand, you can view them as a PDF without an access code. This lets you prepare your answers before you open the online form. The Bundeswehr’s page does not mention a paper submission route.
Deadlines and routes at a glance
The table below summarises the Bundeswehr’s information. The letter you received remains the binding document.
| Topic | What the Bundeswehr states |
|---|---|
| Submission | Online via the QR code in the covering letter |
| Deadline | One month to complete and return the form |
| Reminder | Letter by registered mail with a new deadline of two weeks |
| Lost letter or code | Request a new one via deinwehrdienst.de or by email to [email protected] |
| Confirmation | Digital, after submitting |
The page does not say whether the online form saves interim entries. Plan enough time to complete it in one sitting.
Step by step: how to complete the questionnaire
- Note the date of the covering letter and add the one month deadline to your calendar.
- Read the questions as a PDF and prepare your answers, especially on your health.
- Open the online form using the QR code and complete it in full.
- Check your entries before you submit, then save the digital confirmation.
The Bundeswehr’s guidance on the duty itself is covered in our guide on the obligation for men aged 18 (in German). The reminder procedure is explained in our guide on deadlines and reminders (in German). This guide stays with completing the form.
What to do if the letter or the code is missing
If the letter is missing or the code no longer works, you can request both again via deinwehrdienst.de. Alternatively, you can send an email to [email protected]. The deadlines continue to run in this case. Do not wait for a replacement before you start filling in the form.
Which steps make sense when no post arrives is described in our guide on missing letters (in German).
Why careful completion matters
According to the Bundeswehr, anyone who does not complete the questionnaire, completes it late or completes it incorrectly commits a regulatory offence. A fine of up to 250 euros is provided for. The statutory upper limit, as stated on the page, is 1,000 euros. Status: 19 December 2025.
The obligation remains in place even after a fine, and the submission can be made up at any time. Those who deal with it early avoid a hearing procedure and additional correspondence. Details on fines and their consequences are in our guide on the topic (in German).
What happens after you complete the form
- The Bundeswehr invites you to a Karrierecenter.
- There, the medical examination (Musterung) or the assessment takes place, including the medical assessment.
- You can state a wish regarding the location or the branch of service, which is taken into account where possible.
- Your service starts on the date agreed.
Answer the health questions to the best of your knowledge. If you are unsure how a condition should be classified, the Bundeswehr’s hotline can help. The medical assessment itself takes place only at the examination or assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I submit the questionnaire on paper?
The Bundeswehr’s page describes submission via the QR code and the online form. It does not mention a paper route. If you are unsure, the hotline on 0800-9903300 can help.
Do I have to complete the questionnaire if I want to refuse military service on grounds of conscience?
Yes. An application for conscientious objection does not exempt you from the duty to complete the questionnaire. Our guide on the conscientious objection application (in German) explains how such an application is structured.
Does the duty also apply if I am registered as male?
Yes. The page explicitly states that the duty also applies to persons registered as male. For women and persons registered with another gender, the questionnaire is voluntary.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
A reminder by registered mail follows, setting a new deadline of two weeks. You can still submit the questionnaire afterwards.
What to do now
