Whether a bicycle or the Deutschlandticket is cheaper in everyday life depends on your route, your travel time and the actual running costs of your bike. The Deutschlandticket has a fixed monthly price, whereas a bicycle causes costs spread across purchase, accessories, insurance and repairs. If you want to compare both options properly, you need a clear calculation rather than a gut feeling.
Short answer: From 1 January 2027 the Deutschlandticket costs 66.80 euros per month, which comes to 801.60 euros per year if you hold it for twelve months. The Bavarian state ministry announced this on 30 September 2026, after the transport ministers conference had agreed a price index. Whether a bike is cheaper in your case only the calculation with your own annual costs shows.
The most important points at a glance
- The Deutschlandticket costs 66.80 euros per month from 1 January 2027 (last updated: 30 September 2026).
- A bicycle has costs that are not part of a ticket price, such as purchase, lock, maintenance and insurance.
- The comparison pays off mainly for regular routes, because single trips barely change the result.
- Weather, travel time and luggage do not count in euros, but they should still shape your decision.
- Whether you already pay for a ticket through your semester fee decides whether the ticket is an extra cost for you.
Which bicycle costs matter?
Many students underestimate the ongoing costs of a bicycle because the purchase seems like a one-off. Put every item into the calculation that actually arises during a year. This includes depreciation over the expected useful life, a lock and accessories, maintenance, repairs and, if you choose one, bicycle or liability insurance. For an electric bike the battery is an extra item, and its lifespan and replacement costs vary widely.
| Cost item | Your amount per year | Note for the calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase (depreciation) | Purchase price divided by years of use | Estimate realistically how long the bike lasts |
| Lock and accessories | One-off cost spread over the years of use | Include lights, helmet and lock |
| Maintenance and repairs | Estimate from experience or workshop prices | Plan for wear parts such as chain and brakes |
| Bicycle insurance | Annual premium according to the contract | Only include it if you actually take out a policy |
| Battery (e-bike only) | Replacement cost divided by lifespan | Check the manufacturer and tariff details |
How do you calculate the comparison correctly?
Step one is the ticket calculation. The Deutschlandticket costs 66.80 euros per month. Assumption: you pay it for twelve months, which gives an annual total of 801.60 euros. If you only need the ticket for part of the year, count the months accordingly. Step two is the bicycle calculation. Add up all annual costs from the table above. Step three is the comparison. If the bicycle total is below the ticket price, the bike is the cheaper option. If it is above, the ticket is cheaper.
A worked example shows how the sum looks. Assumption: the bike costs 600 euros, lasts five years and is ridden without insurance. The lock costs 60 euros once, and maintenance is estimated at 80 euros per year. The annual costs are then 120 euros for the bike, 12 euros for the lock and 80 euros for maintenance, which totals 212 euros. Compared with 801.60 euros for twelve months of the Deutschlandticket, the bike is clearly lower in this example. If your assumptions change, the result changes too.
The comparison only makes sense if you use the route as often as you need the ticket. A bike that you only ride in summer causes fewer costs over the year than a ticket that you pay for all year round. The reverse applies as well, if you walk or take the bus in winter and then barely use the ticket.
What role does the semester ticket play?
Many universities charge a semester fee that includes a semester ticket. In that case you already pay for the ticket, and the bicycle only saves money if you do not need the ticket at all. According to the same announcement, the semester ticket costs 40.08 euros for 2027, as the Bavarian state ministry reported on 30 September 2026. Whether and how it is included in the fee at your university is set out in your university’s fee regulations.
If you want to use the Deutschlandticket in addition to the semester ticket, calculate the extra costs separately. The bicycle then competes not with the semester ticket alone, but with the total price of both tickets.
Which factors besides price count?
Price does not decide everything. Time is an important factor. If you reach your destination faster by bike than by bus and train, that can be a significant advantage. Conversely, riding in rain or darkness costs comfort, and for some people that is a real drawback. Luggage, cold, road safety and parking at your destination also belong in the balance.
If you often have long evening journeys or depend on appointments, weigh the reliability of each means of transport. A ticket does not become more expensive when trains are delayed, but delays can lengthen your time on the road. A bicycle is easier to plan, as long as you are fit enough to ride it.
The timing of the decision also matters. Anyone who buys a bike at the start of their studies pays the purchase price in one go, while the ticket is charged monthly. This question of cash flow is a separate point alongside the annual calculation and can tip the balance on a tight budget.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Deutschlandticket worth it for commuting students?
That depends on the distance. For daily routes that you can cover by bike in a reasonable time, the bicycle may be cheaper. For long distances, rain or poor cycle paths, the ticket may be the better solution. Work through both options with your own figures.
Is a bicycle always cheaper than a ticket?
No. A high-quality bike with a battery, insurance and regular repairs can cost more in a year than a ticket. A second-hand bike with low follow-up costs usually looks different. The answer only emerges from your calculation.
How secure is the 2027 price of the Deutschlandticket?
According to the Bavarian state ministry’s announcement of 30 September 2026, the price is fixed. The transport ministers conference adopted a price index, on the basis of which the price is calculated. Check the website of the transport association in your region for the price currently in force.
Can I cancel the Deutschlandticket at any time?
Notice periods and procedures are set out in the provider’s contract terms. Our overview of deadlines and steps is linked below, in German only.
Can a bicycle replace the semester ticket?
The bicycle does not automatically remove the ticket from your semester fee. Whether you can opt out of the semester ticket or obtain an exemption is governed by the fee regulations of your university. If an exemption is possible, you have to apply for it, and deadlines differ between universities.
What you should do now
- List all the routes you regularly travel during the semester, with distance and frequency.
- Enter the annual costs of your bike in the table, using realistic estimates for maintenance and insurance.
- Set the ticket price of 66.80 euros per month from 2027 against that total, and include costs already covered by the semester fee.
- Add factors such as time, weather and comfort, and then decide which solution suits your semester.
