When you look for e-scooter insurance, most students compare prices first and features second. That is understandable, but it can easily lead to a contract that fails you after an accident. This checklist shows what students should check before they sign and before they apply for an insurance plate.
Short answer: When you take out e-scooter insurance, check the scope of the liability cover, the validity of the insurance plate, the contract term and notice periods, and the exclusions. We do not give a premium as a figure here, because tariffs differ and providers publish their prices. Last updated: November 2026.
The most important points at a glance
- Liability insurance is the compulsory part. It covers damage you cause to third parties.
- Without a valid plate you have no proof, even if a contract exists. Check both.
- Term and notice periods decide how flexible you stay if you sell the scooter or stop using it.
- Add-on modules such as theft or own-damage cover are optional and only make sense if they fit your vehicle.
- Compare services and conditions in writing, not just the premium.
Why check liability cover first?
Liability insurance is the part of the cover that the law requires, and it protects other people. It does not pay for damage to your own scooter. If you take out only the compulsory cover, you are legally protected but may have to pay for your own damage yourself. For many students that is the decisive point.
A minimum level of cover is not a quality mark. What counts is the level of the sums insured for injury and property damage, and which exclusions apply. Read the terms to the end before you sign.
Which criteria should you compare?
The table below summarises the points that appear in almost every offer. The terms differ from provider to provider, but the questions stay the same.
| Criterion | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Liability cover and sums insured | Protects you against claims by third parties | Whether personal injury and property damage are covered adequately |
| Insurance plate | Without valid proof you run into problems at checks | Period of validity and correct attachment |
| Contract term | Determines how long you are bound | Whether the contract renews automatically |
| Notice periods | Decide your flexibility when selling or switching | Note the form and deadline in writing |
| Exclusions | Set out when cover does not apply | Use by other people, racing, alcohol, commercial use |
| Add-on modules | Theft or damage to your own scooter | Choose only if the value of the vehicle justifies the cost |
The table deliberately names no providers and no tariffs. The concrete conditions appear in the policy terms and in the product information of the insurer, which you can request directly.
What does the plate mean for your contract?
The insurance plate is tied to an existing insurance contract. It shows the proof you must present during checks. The plate is not a substitute for the contract itself, but the visible proof of it. We explain what the plate looks like and when it applies in our guide E-scooter insurance plate: what applies in 2026 and 2027 (in German).
Make sure the plate is attached correctly and firmly. Confirm with your provider exactly what counts as valid proof and whether an email confirmation is enough for checks.
How do term and cancellation affect your finances?
An insurance contract is an ongoing cost. If it renews automatically, you keep paying even when the scooter is no longer in use. That is why it pays to look at the renewal mechanism before you sign.
Assumption: you pay a monthly amount for the scooter, and the contract renews for another year unless you cancel in time. If you miss the deadline, you remain bound for the following year. Note the date as soon as you receive the contract. Our overview of student insurance: liability, contents and accident cover shows how to keep such costs in view.
Which exclusions are most often overlooked?
Exclusions usually appear in the small print, and that is where it is decided whether a claim is paid. For students three points matter most.
- Use by other people: check whether friends or flatmates may ride the scooter and whether that is covered.
- Use under the influence of alcohol or drugs: many terms exclude or reduce benefits in such cases.
- Journeys outside the intended purpose: races, hire-out or commercial use are often regulated separately.
If a clause is unclear, ask in writing. Verbal explanations rarely help after an accident.
How can you compare sensibly?
A fair comparison means setting the same services side by side. Put your offers in a table of your own and mark every difference. This shows quickly whether a low premium was bought with less protection.
- Note which scooter should be insured and whether it is new or second-hand.
- Compare liability scope, term, notice period and exclusions before you look at the price.
- Ask what the proof looks like for checks and when it is issued.
- Check whether the provider names a contact point for claims and how a claim is reported.
- Ask for the offer in writing and read it in full before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is liability cover enough, or do I need more?
Liability cover is the legally required minimum. Whether you also need cover for your own scooter depends on its value and on your financial situation. If you cannot afford extra cover, at least choose the liability cover with great care.
Must I stay with a provider when I sell the scooter?
That depends on the contract. Check whether the insurance can be transferred to a new keeper or whether you must cancel. Cancelling at the right time prevents you from paying twice.
How do I recognise a trustworthy contract?
A reliable offer names the insurer, the terms, the scope of cover and the cancellation rules clearly. If you cannot find something, ask. Be wary of providers who pressure you or explain offers only verbally.
What if the contract no longer fits during its term?
Then it is worth checking your cancellation options. Note the date on which you must decide, and always confirm a cancellation in writing. A query to the provider will show whether early termination is possible at all.
Does the insurance cover borrowed scooters?
The contract decides. As a rule, cover relates to the insured vehicle. For another person’s scooter you need an agreement with the keeper or the terms of the hire provider. The conditions set out the details.
What to do now
- Decide whether you need only liability cover or additional modules.
- Put at least three offers side by side and compare the services.
- Check term, notice period and exclusions before you sign.
- Have the proof and its period of validity confirmed in writing.
- Enter the cancellation date in your calendar.
