What does the Deutschlandticket cost in 2027?
The Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport announced on 30 September 2026 that the Deutschlandticket will cost 66.80 euros per month in 2027. The increase is 3.80 euros compared with 2026. Who sets the price of the Deutschlandticket?
The Conference of Transport Ministers (VMK, Verkehrsministerkonferenz) approved the price index unanimously at its spring conference in Lindau in March 2026. The amount is calculated by D-Tix GmbH & Co. KG. The formula takes personnel, energy and general costs into account, weights them and records them on fixed reference dates. The index was developed with the participation of the associations of transport operators and of the authorities responsible for local transport.
According to the announcement, the details of the decision are published on the VMK website. The formula itself is explained in our guide on the Deutschlandticket price formula.
What changes for you in practice?
The announcement describes a price adjustment. It does not mention further changes to the tariff, for example to the area in which the ticket is valid. For subscribers, the monthly amount that the account is charged from January 2027 is therefore the main change.
A worked example shows the scale. Assumption: you hold a subscription that runs for twelve months in 2027 without interruption. At 66.80 euros per month, that comes to 801.60 euros for the year. At 63 euros per month, it would be 756.00 euros. The difference is 45.60 euros per year. The prior-year price of 63 euros follows from the difference to the 66.80 euros.
If a tariff change also changes the conditions of use, such as the area in which the ticket is valid or the group of eligible people, the general tariff terms allow the subscription to be cancelled with one month notice in text form. The other cancellation rules are explained in our guide on cancelling the Deutschlandticket.
Which ticket formats exist for subscriptions?
The general tariff terms distinguish three forms: the chip card, the HandyTicket and the paper ticket. Each form has cancellation deadlines that depend on the format. With the chip card, the right to travel ends once the cancellation takes effect, and the same applies to the HandyTicket.
The paper ticket has one special feature. After cancellation, the period ticket must be returned up to the fifth day after the cancellation takes effect. Until then, the full monthly price is due for each started month. If you do not return the paper ticket in time, you may therefore continue to pay.
The tariff also sets out consequences for payment problems. If the account has insufficient funds or the direct debit mandate is revoked, the sales partner can cancel the subscription after setting a deadline. According to the tariff, a returned direct debit costs 5.00 euros per transaction.
What does this mean for students?
The same announcement gives 40.08 euros for the semester ticket in 2027. The unit is not clearly stated. Whether the amount is charged per month or per semester is set out in the fee regulations and notices of your university.
If you are enrolled at a university, the semester ticket is usually paid through the semester contribution. An additional Deutschlandticket is then mainly worth considering if you travel outside the university region. The role of both tickets in student life is covered in our guide on cheap travel as a student (in German). The figures for the 2027 semester ticket are explained in our guide on the semester ticket 2027.
Frequently asked questions
Does the price of 66.80 euros also apply to new customers?
The announcement does not distinguish between customer groups and gives the price for 2027 in general terms. Whether sales partners offer their own promotions or additional conditions is for each provider to decide. Check the current conditions before you sign up.
Will the Deutschlandticket become more expensive again in 2028?
The index will be applied every year to set the price. The announcement does not reveal which amount applies in 2028. The price is only firm once it has been set for the relevant year.
Is the job ticket cheaper than the Deutschlandticket?
According to the announcement, the job ticket costs 63.46 euros in 2027, which is below the Deutschlandticket. Whether you can use it depends on whether your employer offers it. Whether the difference is worthwhile for you depends on your routes and travel days.
Do I have to cancel my subscription because of the price increase?
The announcement does not create any obligation to cancel. If you want to end the subscription, you must observe the deadlines. A cancellation takes effect at the end of the calendar month if it arrives by the 10th of that month.
What does the semester ticket cost in 2027 at my university?
You will find the amount for your university in the fee regulations or from the student services organisation responsible for you. The announcement gives 40.08 euros without naming individual universities, so differences between universities are possible.
What to do now
- Check whether you have a Deutschlandticket subscription or a semester ticket, and note the date of your next direct debit.

- Ask your university whether the 2027 semester ticket is charged per month or per semester.
- If you want to end the subscription, send the cancellation in text form in good time before the 10th of the month.
