What changes in 2027 for insurance? There is no single list of changes, because each type of insurance follows its own rules. This overview separates the points that matter for students and new graduates by status: set by law, in the legislative process, or only under discussion.

Short answer: For statutory health insurance, the average additional contribution for 2027 is an estimate of 2.9 percent. A mandatory natural hazard insurance is under discussion and has not been passed. For motor insurance, the contract sets the notice period. Last updated: November 2026.

The most important points at a glance

  • The average additional contribution for 2027 is an estimate of 2.9 percent. Your insurer’s rate may differ.
  • If the additional contribution is raised, you can terminate by the end of the month from which it applies.
  • A mandatory natural hazard insurance is under discussion but has not been passed.
  • The notice period for motor insurance is set in the contract, not by a general change date.
  • Existing contracts usually continue unchanged as long as you do nothing.

Which insurance products have a key date in 2027?

The table below classifies the most important insurance products by the status as of November 2026. The contract and the notification from the insurer always remain decisive.

What does the 2027 additional contribution mean for insured people?

The average additional contribution for 2027 is 2.9 percent on a calculated basis. This figure comes from the estimate of the Schätzerkreis (the working group that estimates the finances of statutory health insurance) of 13 and 14 October 2026. The official determination by the Federal Ministry of Health is announced for early November 2026. Your insurer sets its own additional contribution, which may differ from the average.

If your insurer raises its additional contribution, a special right of termination applies. You can terminate by the end of the month from which the contribution is first charged or raised. The twelve-month minimum binding period then does not apply (§ 175 para. 4 sentence 6 SGB V). An overview of contributions is available in Health insurance 2027: what changes for insured people and students.

Is there a requirement for natural hazard insurance?

As of November 2026, a mandatory natural hazard insurance is under discussion. The Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Ministry of Finance are responsible for the outline proposals. No draft bill exists. If such a requirement came, it would mainly affect owners of residential buildings.

Regardless of this, it is worth checking your contracts. For building and contents insurance, check whether storm, flood and backwater are covered and which excess applies. These points often matter more in a claim than the question of a future requirement.

When can you change your motor insurance?

Motor insurance usually runs for one insurance year. The notice period is stated in the policy and the general terms. A switch is only possible if you terminate in time, so review the contract before the notice period ends.

Comparison portals often name a general switching date in the autumn. That date does not have to apply to your contract. What counts is what your insurer has agreed in writing. When you terminate, keep proof that the notice reached the insurer.

Students and new graduates who insure a vehicle will find information on discounts in student discounts on insurance (in German).

Which documents do you need for a comparison?

A clean check needs three documents. With them you can clarify the term, the notice period and the contribution before you act.

  • Policy document with contract number, term and premium
  • Contract terms with the rules on termination
  • Premium notice with the due date of the next payment
  • Notification from your health insurer about the additional contribution

A worked example shows the size of an increase. Assumption: your additional contribution rises by 0.5 percentage points and the reference amount for students is 855 euros per month. The contribution then rises by 4.28 euros per month, or about 51 euros per year. This sum helps you weigh a possible termination against the effort of switching.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to take out new insurance contracts in 2027?

Usually not. Existing contracts continue. Depending on the type of insurance, changes mainly concern contributions or conditions. Check the notifications from your insurers before you act.

Is natural hazard insurance already mandatory?

No. A requirement is under discussion and no law has been passed. Whether and when it comes is open. If you already have building insurance, check the existing cover anyway.

Until when can I terminate if my contribution rises?

Until the end of the month from which the additional contribution is first charged or raised. The twelve-month binding period does not apply then. The rule is set out in § 175 para. 4 sentence 6 SGB V.

Where do I find the notice period of my motor insurance?

In the policy and in the contract terms. If something is unclear, ask the insurer in writing about the end of the contract period and the deadline for termination.

What changes for students with a minijob regarding pension insurance?

Since 1 July 2026, an exemption from pension insurance in a minijob can be revoked once. Whether the exemption makes sense for you depends on your retirement planning. More on pensions is in the article on pensions in 2027 for younger cohorts.

What happens if I miss the notice deadline?

The contract then usually renews for another contract year. Check the terms to see whether automatic renewal applies, and note the termination date early.

Can I terminate an insurance policy during the current year?

That depends on the contract. For statutory health insurance the special right of termination under § 175 SGB V applies. Otherwise the contract terms decide. A termination without a basis in the contract is usually not effective.

What to do now

  1. Make a list of all insurance contracts with notice periods and renewal dates.
  2. After the official determination, check the additional contribution of your health insurer and note the deadline for a possible special termination.
  3. Check the natural hazard cover and the excess in your building and contents insurance.
  4. Terminate only in writing and with proof, if you want to end a contract.
