AI app builders and agentic IDEs are changing how students build software. Instead of writing every line by hand, you describe a task in plain sentences, and an AI tool produces code, interfaces and sometimes even the connection to a database and hosting. Many of these tools now offer students discounts, but the terms change often and differ a lot. This guide explains what Kiro, v0 and Lovable include according to their providers, what to expect during student verification (Verifizierung), and which questions to clarify before you take out a subscription.
Short answer: According to the provider, Kiro gives students 1,000 credits per month for a full year. Lovable offers up to 50 percent off the Pro plan (Tarif) for up to 12 months, which is $12.50 instead of $25 per month. The v0 programme for students lists no German university, so it does not apply to students in Germany. Last updated: October 2026, offers change frequently.
The key points in brief
- Agentic IDEs work through tasks in several steps, while AI app builders generate a working application from a description. Neither replaces understanding the code.
- According to the provider, Kiro gives eligible students 1,000 credits per month, free for one full year, without a credit card.
- Lovable offers up to 50 percent off the Pro plan for up to 12 months, along with 100 credits per month.
- The list of participating universities for v0 contains no German university.
- Many offers require verification with a university email address or proof of student status (Studierendenstatus).
- The providers do not publish a simple country list. Whether an offer applies to you becomes clear during sign-up.
What are agentic IDEs and AI app builders?
An agentic IDE is a development environment in which an AI assistant reads and changes files, runs commands and works through tasks in several steps. You set the goal, review intermediate results and decide what to keep. An AI app builder works more in the browser. You describe an application, such as a booking page or a tool for study groups, and the tool generates the interface and code, often including hosting.
Both differ from classic code completion tools. OpenAI Codex, which also works through tasks in several steps, is covered in OpenAI Codex for Students: Offer, Price and Use at University, and the browser-based app builder Base44 in Base44 for Students: Offer, Price and Use in Your Studies. The guide Programming with AI at university: when Copilot helps and when it does not explains how assistants help with programming and where they can slow down learning.
Which offers exist for students?
The table summarises what the providers state for students. The status is October 2026.
| Provider | Benefit according to the provider | Student price | Duration | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kiro | 1,000 credits per month | free according to the provider | one full year | SheerID with name, date of birth and university, sometimes a student ID |
| Lovable Pro | 100 credits per month | up to 50 percent off: $12.50 instead of $25 per month | up to 12 months | university email address and confirmation of enrolment, no card needed |
| v0 (Vercel) | free plan with 7 messages per day, paid plans from $30 per user per month | no German university listed | one year at participating universities | university must be on the provider’s list |
Kiro offers 1,000 credits per month according to the provider’s website, free for a full year. The page states that unused credits do not carry over to the following month, and that additional credits are not available. Verification runs through SheerID. You enter your first name, last name, date of birth and university. Sometimes the service also asks for a student card or a certificate of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung). You must be at least 18 years old, and no credit card is required. After the year ends, your account is automatically moved to Kiro’s free tier. The page does not state a price for the Pro plan. Details are in Kiro for Students: Offer, Price and Use During Your Studies.
Lovable offers students up to 50 percent off the Pro plan for up to 12 months, according to its website. The page states that Pro costs $25 per month and $12.50 with the discount. You also get 100 credits per month. You sign up with your university email address and confirm your enrolment. According to the provider, no card is needed for verification. The page names no list of countries and no end date for redemption. Details are in Lovable for Students: Offer, Price and Use in Your Studies.
v0 from Vercel offers one year of free access through its v0 for Students programme, provided your university is on the provider’s list. The list includes universities such as Stanford, Harvard and MIT, but no German university. The free plan includes 7 messages per day, and paid plans start at $30 per user per month. Current prices are on Vercel’s pricing page. The German guide on v0 is v0 by Vercel for Students: Offer, Price and Use During Your Studies.
How do you calculate with credits and subscriptions?
Credits are quotas, and a task uses a different amount depending on its scope. A simple calculation is therefore worth doing before you start a project. The following example uses an assumption and is not a figure from a provider.
Calculation example. Assumption: you use Lovable Pro for twelve months. According to the provider, Pro costs $25 per month, or $12.50 with the discount. Over twelve months, that comes to $150 instead of $300. Taxes, exchange rates and possible extra costs are not included.
This is how you check whether your quota is enough:
- Note how many projects you realistically start per month, for example a prototype for a seminar.
- Check whether your account shows a usage overview, and watch consumption during the first few weeks.
- Test with small tasks before you generate large applications in full.
- Plan a buffer for the submission phase, because demand usually rises noticeably at that time.
What to watch for regarding data protection and university rules
The examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung) and guidelines of your university decide whether and how you may use AI tools, and whether you must disclose their use. The rules differ considerably between departments. Read them before you take code from an app builder into a submission. An overview is in the guide AI rules at universities.
For data protection, one simple rule applies: do not enter personal data, login credentials or unpublished research data into prompts. This also covers test data from real surveys. The provider describes what happens to your inputs in its privacy notices. More on this is in Data protection with AI tools at university.
Generated code is not automatically reviewed code. Read it, test it and watch for security gaps, for example in sign-up forms or database access. Projects with real customer data need a professional review, which goes beyond reading the code yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kiro free for students?
According to the provider’s website, eligible students receive 1,000 credits per month for a full year. Verification runs through SheerID and asks for details of your university. Sign-up shows whether your university is eligible.
Does the offer apply in Germany?
The Kiro and Lovable pages do not publish a country list that explicitly names Germany. For Kiro, eligibility depends on a list of eligible universities. If you are unsure, ask the provider’s support before you commit.
What happens after you graduate?
With Kiro, your account automatically moves to the free tier once the year has ended. With Lovable, the discount runs for up to 12 months according to the provider. What applies after that depends on the plan you have booked. When your student status ends, check the terms, because some offers check status again at intervals.
Can I combine several offers?
Each provider sets out in its terms whether offers can be combined. Do not assume that benefits add up automatically. A free quota and a discount on a plan are separate arrangements and should be checked separately.
Do I need to add a credit card?
According to the provider’s website, you do not need a credit card for Kiro. Lovable also does not require a card for verification. Once an offer ends, you usually have to add a payment method to keep using paid plans. Check this in advance so that nothing comes as a surprise.
Can I submit a project built with an app builder?
That depends on your examination regulations. Many universities require you to disclose the use of AI and assess your own contribution. Clarify this with your lecturer before you take over any code.
What to do now
- Check whether your university provides access to one of these tools before you take out a private subscription.
- Read the terms on the provider’s official site, especially the duration, the countries and the end of the benefit.
- Sign up with your university email address and complete the verification.
- Calculate consumption on a small test project before you start larger work.
- Clarify with your lecturer or the examination regulations whether you must disclose your use of AI.
