Google AI Studio for students is mainly a question of pricing tiers. According to the pricing page, Google’s development environment can be started without a fee. A separate student offer for AI Studio is not listed on the provider’s pages, and Google subscriptions with a student offer are separate.

Short answer: Google AI Studio is Google’s environment for trying out and developing with Gemini models. According to Google’s pricing page, there is a free tier of the Gemini API with limits. A separate student offer for AI Studio is not listed on the pricing page. The pricing page names no country restriction either; Google lists regions separately. Last updated: October 2026, offers change frequently.

Key points

  • AI Studio is Google’s environment for testing and developing with Gemini models. According to the pricing page, access is available without a subscription.
  • The free tier of the Gemini API has limits. Google regularly changes which models are included.
  • A separate student offer for AI Studio is not listed on the pricing page. The student offer for a Google subscription is separate.
  • In the free tier, Google says inputs may be used to improve its products. In the paid tier, the pricing page does not provide for this.
  • Before you use research or exam data, check your university’s rules and your data settings.

What is Google AI Studio?

Google AI Studio is Google’s development environment, in which you can try out Gemini models, formulate requests and use the programming interface (API) for your own applications. At university it suits small projects, testing prompts and understanding how language models respond to input.

AI Studio and the Google subscription used day to day are different offers. If you are looking for the chat interface of Gemini, the conditions are in our article on Google Gemini for students (in German).

Which tiers exist and what do they cost?

For the Gemini API, Google distinguishes between a free tier and paid usage billed by consumption (pay-as-you-go). Prices are listed per model on the Gemini API pricing page and change over time. Google lists the current amounts there.

The information above is as of October 2026, taken from Google’s pricing page. The page describes the free tier as a way to start for developers and small projects, with limits. The specific values are listed per model on the page.

Does the offer apply in Germany?

The pricing page names no country-specific restriction. Google refers to a separate page for regions. Check there whether your location is listed before you use the tier.

What applies to the Google subscription for students?

Separately from AI Studio, there is a student offer for Google subscriptions. The German Google help page names a 12-month trial subscription to Google AI Plus for students. According to the same page, Google AI Pro is offered at a discounted price. The page gives no redemption deadline. The 12-month AI Pro offer in Google’s Gemini help, however, applies only in the United States. Read the conditions on Google’s own page before you rely on them.

What does the free tier mean for your data?

In the free tier, Google may use content to improve its products under the terms. In the paid tier, the pricing table does not provide for this. Do not enter personal data, interview transcripts or unpublished research data into the free tier.

How to set your account and data options is covered in our guide AI and data protection at university (in German). Data sharing settings change, so check them again before any larger use.

What do you need to keep in mind at university?

Your university’s examination regulations and your lecturers’ instructions apply. Many universities set rules for disclosing AI use in their own guidelines. Ask before you write a thesis, rather than justifying the use afterwards.

Check model outputs like any other source. For code, that means testing. For text, cross-check with the specialist literature. API keys do not belong in publicly accessible code, otherwise third parties can cause costs on your account.

How do you activate the offer?

AI Studio needs no activation, only a sign-in with your Google account. For access to the programming interface, follow these steps in order.

  1. Open Google AI Studio with your Google account and read the notes on tiers and data use.
  2. Check which tier applies to your project before you enter content. The information is in the settings and on the pricing page.
  3. Create an API key only if you need it for your own program, and keep it outside public repositories.
  4. For paid use, set a spending limit if the interface offers one, so that costs do not rise unnoticed.
  5. Document which AI outputs you took over. This makes disclosure to supervisors or the examination office easier.

What happens after your studies?

AI Studio is not tied to a student status. Access remains as long as Google offers it in this form. Google subscriptions with a student discount are different: they depend on your student status. After a trial subscription ends, Google converts it into a regular paid subscription and notifies you beforehand.

Therefore, do not plan on projects from your studies continuing for free afterwards. The free tier can change, and limits apply regardless of your status.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google AI Studio free for students?

Access to AI Studio and the free tier of the Gemini API can be used without a fee according to Google’s pricing page, but with limits. A separate student offer for AI Studio is not listed on the pricing page. Paid use depends on consumption.

Do I need proof of student status?

For free access, the pricing page does not mention university proof. Google subscriptions with a student offer follow their own procedures, described on Google’s help page.

What data does Google use in the free tier?

According to the pricing page, content in the free tier may be used to improve products. In the paid tier, the same table does not provide for this. Our data guide explains how to check and adjust these settings.

May I use AI Studio for exam tasks?

Your examination regulations and the course decide. Ask before you submit AI output, and label the use if your university requires it.

What are the alternatives?

If you are looking for programming help, compare tools with their own tiers. The guide to OpenAI Codex for students (in German) covers an offer with credits. The article on GitHub Copilot for students (in German) shows the conditions there. For evaluations at university, the view on software for data science at university (in German) is worth a look.

So what do you do now?

  1. Check on the Google pricing page whether the free tier is enough for your project.
  2. Decide which data you want to use, and compare it with the notes on data use.
  3. Clarify with your university whether AI use is allowed for your course or thesis.
  4. If you want a Google subscription with a student offer, check the conditions on Google’s page before you sign up.
