Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) during a media and communication degree is worth considering if you plan to work later in editorial teams, public relations, content production or as a freelancer. This guide explains how insurers classify creative and freelance work, which health questions matter and how to calculate costs in a simple way. The basis is the law and the policy terms.

Short answer: Occupational disability insurance pays out if you are likely to be permanently unable to work in your last practised occupation because of illness, bodily injury or an age-atypical decline in strength (Section 172 (2) VVG, as of October 2026). For media jobs the actual activity often counts, especially in self-employment. Premiums depend on age, health, occupation and tariff.

The Key Points at a Glance

  • Media jobs range from editorial work and PR to podcasts, video and freelance writing.
  • In self-employment the insurer checks the activity actually carried out, not only your degree.
  • Screen work, neck and voice are typical health topics in this field.
  • Switching between employment and freelance work can change the classification.
  • The referral to other activities in the media sector is often broad and should be limited in the contract.
  • Details of complaints and treatments must be complete (Section 19 VVG).

How Is a Media Job Classified for Disability Insurance?

Insurers classify occupations by the activity actually carried out, not by job title. An editor in a newsroom faces different strains than a social media manager who is often on the move. During your studies there is often no occupation in the narrower sense yet, so the career path you aim for serves as a guide. Ask the insurer how it classifies editorial work, PR, content creation and freelance activities.

For self-employed people the question often arises whether individual assignments make up the activity or whether a fixed occupation exists. Have the definitions in the terms explained to you, and note which activities are named there explicitly.

What Does Disability Insurance Cost During a Media Degree?

The amount of the premium depends on entry age, state of health, occupational group, desired pension and term. Fixed amounts cannot reliably be stated without a specific offer. A calculation shows you the total sum you would pay over the term.

  1. Take the monthly premium from a specific offer and note the occupational group.
  2. Multiply the premium by the number of months until the agreed end.
  3. Plan a reserve for adjustments if your tariff provides for them.

Assumption: monthly premium of 55 euros, start at age 26, end at age 67. That is 41 years, so 492 months. 492 times 55 euros comes to 27,060 euros. The sum is an example calculation without adjustments.

Which Health Questions Matter for Media Jobs?

Many activities in the media sector take place on a screen, sitting down and with little movement. Insurers therefore ask about complaints that can result from this. Voice and hearing problems also come up if you work a lot in front of a microphone.

AreaTypical questionsWhat to watch out for
EyesVisual impairment, eye diseases, light sensitivityState corrections and findings from your eye doctor
Neck and backTension, complaints of a slipped discState the duration and treatment of the complaints
Voice and hearingVocal cord problems, hearing lossMention treatments even if they were short
Mental healthStress, exhaustion, therapiesTake over diagnoses from the practice

The application asks for details of material circumstances that you have been asked about (Section 19 (1) VVG). Withdrawal requires that the breach was intentional or grossly negligent (Section 19 (3) VVG). For freelancers in particular it helps to have findings and appointments organised and to hand.

How Does the Referral Work for Media Jobs?

Under Section 172 (3) VVG the insurer may contractually require that you also do not perform any other activity that corresponds to your training, abilities and previous social standing. The media sector has many related fields, such as project management, teaching or marketing consulting. A clause that expects you to switch to such roles can significantly limit your cover. Check therefore how far the referral is worded in the contract, and read our guide on abstract referral clauses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is disability insurance worthwhile if I later work as a freelancer?

For self-employed people disability insurance is often especially important, because no employer steps in. What matters is that the policy describes your freelance activity correctly. Fluctuating income should be taken into account when setting the premium and the pension amount.

Do I have to report a switch from permanent employment to freelance work?

That depends on the terms. If your activity changes significantly, a notification may be required under the contract. When in doubt, ask before you make the switch, so that no gap in cover arises.

When is a risk enquiry worthwhile?

If you already have complaints, for example in the back or the voice, an anonymous risk enquiry (Risikovoranfrage) can show in advance how an insurer would classify you. It does not replace an application, but it gives you clarity. More on this in our guide on disability insurance with a pre-existing condition as a student.

Do internships and working student jobs count as an occupation?

Whether an activity counts as an occupation within the meaning of the contract is decided by the description in the contract, not by its duration alone. An internship in an editorial team is therefore assessed differently from a permanent position in public relations. Ask whether and how internships and working student activities are taken into account in the classification, and note the answer in writing.

Do I need disability insurance during my studies already?

An early application can have advantages, because illnesses that arise later do not enter the application. What matters is that the premium remains affordable after your studies, in case your first earnings fluctuate.

What to Do Now

  1. Describe your desired job concretely, with shares of editorial work, PR or freelance activity.
  2. Collect findings on eyes, voice and back from recent years.
  3. Compare the occupation description and the referral in the terms, not just the premium.
  4. Put open questions before you sign. Personal advice from Academycon is available via How we work (in German).
