A liability insurance policy (Haftpflichtversicherung) during a semester abroad matters most when you cause damage to another person or their property abroad and have to pay for it. Many students assume that their German policy automatically applies everywhere. That is not always the case, so it is worth checking the terms carefully before you leave.

Short answer: Liability insurance pays for damage you cause to third parties, not for your own losses. Whether your existing policy applies abroad depends on its territorial scope, the duration of cover and the coverage limit. Check the contract in writing before you leave. Last updated: October 2026.

The Most Important Points at a Glance

  • Liability insurance covers damage you cause to others, for example in a student residence or with a host family. It does not cover your own belongings.
  • The statutory accident insurance of your university protects you in accidents, not in cases of damage to third parties.
  • Many family liability policies include children in training, often only with an abroad clause and a time limit.
  • Territorial scope, duration, coverage limit and deductible decide whether the protection fits your destination.
  • Some host universities ask for proof of cover. Clarify the requirements with the international office of your home university.

What Does Liability Insurance Pay If I Cause Damage Abroad?

Anyone who unlawfully and culpably causes damage to another person has to compensate for it (§ 823 BGB (in German), last updated: October 2026). This applies abroad just as it does in Germany. Which law applies in a specific case depends on the facts. Repairs, expert reports and lawyers can cost more abroad than at home, so damage can quickly become more expensive there. Within the scope of the contract, liability insurance releases you from justified claims and defends against unjustified ones (see § 100 VVG (in German), last updated: October 2026, and your policy terms).

Assumption: You cause a water leak in a student residence that damages the flat below. The neighbours demand compensation for furniture and renovation. Without liability insurance, you would have to pay this sum yourself.

Which Options Do I Have to Be Insured Abroad?

There is no single solution. The right option depends on whether you are still covered by a family policy, how long you will stay abroad and what your host university requires. The overview below shows the most common routes, without recommending individual providers.

OptionWhen it often fitsWhat to check
Private liability of your parentsYou are still covered by the family policy, for example as a child in trainingAbroad clause, time limit, territorial scope (Europe or worldwide)
Your own private liability policyYou are no longer covered through your parents or the family policy endsStart of cover, coverage limit, abroad protection from the start of the contract
Abroad add-on or special tariffYour stay is long or the existing policy does not cover abroadTerm, cancellation rules, duration of cover in the destination country
Requirement of the host universityThe university requires a specific proof of coverForm of the proof, minimum cover, language of the certificate

The table does not replace checking your contract. Our notes on Health insurance for students in the EU: EHIC and more are a good starting point, because liability and health cover abroad are often clarified together. Liability insurance is, however, a separate contract that your health insurer does not regulate.

How Do I Check Whether My Existing Liability Insurance Applies Abroad?

The summary on your insurance certificate is not enough. What matters are the policy terms, which set out the territorial scope and exclusions. Proceed in this order:

  1. Get the current terms of your policy, not only the insurance certificate.
  2. Check the territorial scope. Does it say “worldwide”, “Europe” or only “Germany”?
  3. Clarify whether stays abroad are limited in time and when cover ends.
  4. Ask the insurer in writing whether your destination and your stay are covered, and keep the answer.
  5. Save the policy number and confirmation as a PDF in case the university asks for proof.

Also pay attention to the coverage limit and the deductible. Both figures are in the contract and differ strongly between tariffs. A high coverage limit makes sense, because claims for damages can vary widely abroad.

How Do Territorial Scope and Duration Work Together?

Two details in the contract often matter more than the premium: the territorial scope and the duration of cover. A tariff that covers “Europe” does not automatically fit a semester in Canada. Conversely, worldwide cover can be limited in time, so a long stay may not be fully covered. Also check the start date: a policy that begins only after your departure does not protect you for the first weeks.

Ask, too, whether the location of your residence or host family counts as the place of insurance. This is not self-evident, especially for flats you find online. A short email to the insurer with country, city and period creates clarity, and the reply belongs in your documents.

Do I Need Proof of Liability Insurance for the Host University?

Some host universities, student residences and landlords ask for a certificate of insurance, others do not. The requirements are often listed in the admission documents or in the information on your stay. They vary: sometimes a minimum cover is required, sometimes only a confirmation in English. Ask early, because some insurers need a few days to issue a certificate. For Erasmus stays, the rules of the partner university apply, as described in our guide to Health Insurance for Erasmus Exchange Students in Germany.

What Happens If I Have No Liability Insurance?

Without suitable liability insurance, you pay for damage you cause out of your own pocket. If you cannot settle the sum at once, payment arrangements or, in the worst case, enforcement measures may follow. We deliberately do not state concrete premiums here, because they vary strongly by provider, term and destination country. Obtain several offers with the same scope of cover before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my parents’ family liability policy apply abroad automatically?

Not automatically. Many tariffs include stays abroad for a limited time, some only in certain countries or only in Europe. The wording in your policy terms is binding. Send your enquiry to the insurer in writing before you leave.

Does liability insurance also cover damage to my own belongings?

No. Your laptop, your bicycle or your suitcase are not claims by third parties. Contents, electronics and bicycle insurance exist for that purpose. Liability insurance only helps when someone else demands compensation from you.

Do I need liability insurance even for a single semester?

Yes, if you could cause damage during that time, and in a residence or shared flat that can happen quickly. The best way to check whether your existing policy is enough is the list above, before you book your flight.

Does private health insurance abroad replace liability insurance?

No. Health insurance abroad pays treatment costs and repatriation for you. Liability insurance covers claims that others make against you. Both contracts do different jobs, and neither replaces the other.

How to Proceed Now

  1. Clarify the requirements of your host university, the residence and the landlord.
  2. Check your existing liability insurance against the policy terms, not only the insurance certificate.
  3. Close any gap in a targeted way if the territorial scope or the duration does not fit.
  4. Keep the contract, the confirmation and the proof available digitally and on paper.
