Insurance when you move out of your parents’ home mainly affects three areas: statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung), liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung) and contents insurance (Hausratversicherung). Anyone who changes homes often only notices late that their parents’ policies were meant for the previous household. This checklist shows what to check before the move, with figures for 2026 and the sources behind them.

Short answer: Moving within Germany does not automatically end your family insurance (Familienversicherung). It continues as long as the conditions of § 10 SGB V are met, and a residence in Germany is one of them. The income limit in 2026 was €565 per month (as of January 2026). Liability and contents insurance must be checked separately, because both depend on the policies themselves and not only on the move. Last updated: October 2026.

The Most Important Points in Brief

  • Moving within Germany does not change your family insurance as long as your age, training, income and residence in Germany still meet the requirements.
  • You must register with the registration office (Meldebehörde) within two weeks of moving in. You should also tell your health insurer and your other insurers about the new address.
  • Your parents’ liability insurance can continue to protect you, but only under the terms of the policy. Moving out is not automatically without problems.
  • For contents insurance, the Verbraucherzentrale (German consumer advice centre) reports that cover in the old flat usually ends at the latest two months after the move begins (as of August 2026).
  • If you move abroad, check your health insurance separately, because a residence in Germany is a requirement for family insurance.

Does family insurance continue after you move out?

Family insurance is regulated in § 10 SGB V. Children are insured without further conditions up to the age of 18, up to the age of 23 if they are not in paid employment, and up to the age of 25 if they are in school or vocational training. For studies, the age limit of 25 still applies, with no extension to the end of the semester. Moving out of your parents’ home is not mentioned in the law. What matters is your residence or habitual abode in Germany.

RequirementStatusWhat it means for you
Residence or habitual abode in GermanyLaw (§ 10 para. 1 SGB V)A move within Germany is unproblematic. A residence abroad ends the entitlement.
Total income up to the limit€565 per month, 2026 (official)Applies to your total income. For a minijob, the marginal employment limit of €603 (2026) applies.
Age limit during trainingUp to age 25, including studiesAfter this limit, family insurance ends.
No priority insurance of your own§ 10 para. 1 SGB VIf you are compulsorily insured in your own right, you are not covered by family insurance.

Whether you need your own health insurance after moving out therefore depends on the conditions above. If family insurance ends, your health insurer checks in which form you will be insured. A calculation example gives an idea of the amounts. Assumption: you are 26, you are studying, you no longer live with your parents and you no longer have family insurance. The contribution assessment base (Bemessungsgrundlage) for students who do not live with their parents is €855 per month. The individual additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag) of your health insurer comes on top. For the calculation, we assume the average additional contribution of 2.9 percent. The actual amount is set by each insurer.

ComponentAmount per monthStatus and source
Health insurance without additional contribution€87.38Official, 2026, GKV-Spitzenverband (fact sheet on calculation variables)
Additional contribution (assumption: 2.9 percent)€24.80Calculated, 2026
Long-term care insurance (Pflegeversicherung) from age 23 without children€35.91Official, 2026 (including childless surcharge)
Total€148.09Calculated, assuming the average additional contribution

Long-term care contributions are lower for students under 23 or with children. So if you move out at 26 without children, you pay the higher rate. These figures are a guide and do not replace information from your health insurer.

What happens to your parents’ liability insurance?

Many young adults are initially covered by their parents’ private or family liability insurance (Familienhaftpflicht). Whether this cover continues after you move out depends on the specific policy. Often the protection is linked to a shared household or to training. Moving into your own flat can change that cover without you noticing straight away.

Read the conditions before you move. The important points are the details on co-insured persons, the age limit, training and residence. A short written query to the insurer creates clarity. An overview of when you remain co-insured is given in Parents’ liability insurance: how long students are covered.

Do you need your own contents insurance?

Contents insurance covers movable items in your flat, such as furniture, clothing, electrical appliances and similar things. Whether you need your own policy depends on whether you live in your own flat and whether your belongings were insured under your parents’ policy. The Verbraucherzentrale describes the general rule for moves: during the move, cover exists in both flats. Cover in the old flat usually ends at the latest two months after the move begins. If you stay permanently in the old flat, the cover does not transfer to the new flat.

Tell the insurer about the new living space and a realistic value for your belongings. If you move into a larger flat and do not adjust the policy, you risk underinsurance. The move is also a good moment to list the items you take with you, because a list helps in the event of a claim. Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my family insurance if I move out?

No, not simply because you move out within Germany. What matters is your age, training, income and residence in Germany. Tell your health insurer your new address so that your records are correct. If you are moving abroad, clarify the situation before you go.

Do I have to register my new address after moving out?

Yes. After moving in, you must register with the registration office within two weeks (§ 17 Federal Registration Act, Bundesmeldegesetz). Registration is mandatory and also applies to students who only live temporarily in a new city.

Does my liability insurance still apply after I move out?

That depends on your parents’ policy. Many policies protect children in training outside the parental home too, but not in every case and not without limits. Ask the insurer which rules apply to you and keep the answer in writing.

Are my parents’ contents insurance and my new flat enough?

Usually not fully. The policy usually refers to your parents’ flat, and the Verbraucherzentrale advises that a change of home should be reported to the insurer. Check whether a separate policy for your flat makes sense.

What if I lose family insurance at 25?

Then you check whether you can be insured in the student health insurance (Krankenversicherung der Studierenden, KVdS) or whether another form applies. During studies, family insurance ends at the age limit of 25, not at the end of the semester. Your health insurer will inform you about membership and contributions. The figures in the table above are assumptions and serve only as a guide. More on age limits is in Family insurance for students under 25: income limit.

How to proceed now

  1. Check until when you are covered by family insurance. Review your age, training, income and residence in Germany.
  2. Read the liability and contents conditions of your parents’ policies and note open questions.
  3. Clarify in writing, two months before the move, which policies remain and which you need to take out.
  4. Register within two weeks of moving in, and inform your health insurer and other insurers about your new address.
