Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for agricultural science (Agrarwissenschaft) students has one special feature: many graduates run a farm, take over a family estate or work in a family business. Here the boundaries between self-employment, helping out and employment blur. This guide shows how insurers assess these constellations and which health questions matter most in agriculture.
Short answer: Last updated: October 2026. There is no fixed premium for agricultural science students. What matters is whether you are described in the contract as farm manager, employee or adviser. The Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt, Destatis) group agricultural, forestry and nutrition sciences, veterinary medicine recorded about 58,300 students in the winter semester 2025/26 (as of 26.08.2026).
The most important points at a glance
- Under § 172 para. 2 of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG, Versicherungsvertragsgesetz), you are occupationally disabled if you can no longer perform the occupation you last practised. On a farm, what counts is which tasks you actually take on.
- Farm management, helping in the family business and employment are assessed differently.
- Machinery, noise, dust, stable air and crop protection products are health topics that can play a role in the application.
- Statutory cover for farmers runs through its own structures. Private occupational disability insurance does not replace them, it only supplements them.
- The premium depends on your age at entry, your health, your occupational group and the scope of benefits. Only identical benefits are comparable.
How is a farm or business classified in the contract?
In agriculture, the insurer mainly checks who runs the business and which tasks are involved. A farm manager responsible for land and staff is viewed differently from a worker in the family business. The table shows typical constellations.
| Constellation | Typical question from the insurer | What to check in the application |
|---|---|---|
| Managing your own farm | Which tasks do you carry out yourself and which do you delegate? | Describe land, livestock and areas of responsibility |
| Helping out in the family business | Is there an employment relationship or unpaid help? | State the type of help and its scope in a traceable way |
| Advice at a state agricultural chamber (Landwirtschaftskammer) | Is it a public-sector post? | State employer, fixed-term nature and advisory focus |
| Agricultural trade or sale of farm inputs | Are there field visits and vehicle use? | State shares of office work, external appointments and warehouse work |
| Research at a university | Is the post fixed-term or permanent? | Note the type of contract and its term |
The table shows typical questions, not binding classifications. The tariff is what counts. When a farm is taken over, the activity often changes fundamentally. The referral clause under § 172 para. 3 VVG then decides which activity can reasonably be expected of you.
Which health questions matter most in agriculture?
The application asks about pre-existing conditions, treatments and complaints. In agriculture, injuries caused by machines, hearing damage from noise, breathing problems from dust and stable air, and back and joint problems are common topics. Under § 19 para. 1 VVG, you have a duty to disclose (Anzeigepflicht) the circumstances the insurer has asked about in text form. Gesetze im Internet: § 19 VVG (Last updated: 26.10.2026).
- Note accidents, injuries and treatments with dates, even if they had no lasting consequences.
- State respiratory and skin complaints that occur in connection with the stable, the fields or crop protection.
- Write missing findings expressly in the application instead of estimating them.
If you had an accident with agricultural equipment but no medical treatment, mention it anyway if the application asks about injuries. An accident without consequences is something different for the insurer than an unknown incident that surfaces later.
How does the calculation look when farm income fluctuates?
Assume you take over a farm with returns that vary with the weather and prices. Assume you need 1,500 euros a month in case of disability to cover living costs and ongoing private expenses. What matters is which expenses continue if you cannot work, such as loans for machinery or leases. The pension amount should be based on these fixed expenses, not on a good harvest year.
What role does statutory cover play for farmers?
Farmers and family members who help out are insured through their own structures, including the Social Insurance for Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture (SVLFG, Sozialversicherung für Landwirtschaft, Forsten und Gartenbau). Whether and to what extent a statutory disability pension (Rente wegen Erwerbsminderung) applies there is decided by the responsible body in each individual case. Under § 43 SGB VI, the statutory disability pension in principle applies to all insured persons, but the requirements depend on your insurance history. If you take over a farm, consider both systems separately.
For agricultural students without a farm, the same applies as for other students. The statutory disability pension requires mandatory contributions, and many part-time jobs do not meet this requirement. Gesetze im Internet: § 43 SGB VI (Last updated: 26.10.2026).
How large is the agricultural science group?
Agricultural sciences form a subject group together with forestry and nutrition sciences and veterinary medicine. The table shows how this group compares with human medicine and the humanities.
| Subject group, winter semester 2025/26 | Students in total | International students | Share of international students |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agricultural, forestry and nutrition sciences, veterinary medicine | 58,280 | 9,992 | 17.1 percent |
| Humanities | 281,315 | 39,469 | 14.0 percent |
| Human medicine and health sciences | 215,424 | 23,964 | 11.1 percent |

Is it worth taking out occupational disability insurance during your studies?
A policy taken out during your studies benefits from a low entry age and usually good health. Against that, it may be uncertain whether and when a farm will be taken over. If you know that a takeover is coming, describe that situation in the application now. If you are still undecided, you can clarify the classification later, but you will then have to go through a new health check.

Frequently asked questions
Does helping on the parental farm count as an occupation?
That depends on the nature and scope of the work. Regular, responsible help is viewed differently from occasional help. In the application, describe the tasks you actually take on, honestly and completely.
Do I have to state a planned farm takeover in the application?
If the takeover is settled or concretely planned, you should state it, because it affects the classification. If it is still uncertain, it is enough to describe your current activity precisely and clarify the question in writing.
What about accidents with machinery that happened a long time ago?
Past accidents can be relevant if the application asks about them. Give the date, the injury and the treatment. An accident without lasting consequences does not necessarily lead to a refusal, but the insurer decides this after review.
Does the policy also cover work abroad?
That depends on the tariff and on your place of residence. For stays abroad for research or projects, ask in advance whether your insurance cover remains unchanged.
Your next steps
- Describe your role in the business or in the planned activity in the application as precisely as possible.
- Clarify in writing how the tariff classifies management, family help and advisory work.
- Check the referral clause under § 172 para. 3 VVG with regard to a possible farm takeover.
- Answer the health questions completely and keep a copy of the application.
