An occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) during your mathematics studies protects your income if you can no longer practise your profession because of illness or an accident. Mathematicians work in insurance, banking, data analysis, research and in schools. Many activities take place on a screen, which makes health questions and the referral clause especially important.
Short answer: Under the joint structural guidelines of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz, KMK), a bachelor’s degree takes six to eight semesters and a master’s degree two to four semesters (Last updated: October 2026). For occupational disability insurance, what counts is whether you later work in research, data analysis, the insurance sector or at a school. The insurer classifies your occupation according to its terms.
The key points at a glance
- Screen work: Back, neck, eyes and concentration demands shape the daily work of many mathematicians.
- Career fields: Actuarial work, data analysis, finance and risk management, research and teaching.
- Actuarial training: Training as an actuary (Aktuarin or Aktuar) runs through the German Actuarial Association (Deutsche Aktuarvereinigung).
- Referral: Moves between analysis, research and management are common, and the contract determines what is reasonable.
- Health questions: Mental health complaints also belong in your disclosures if they were treated and you are asked about them.
Which careers suit a mathematics degree?
Mathematics is a subject with many applications. The overview shows the most common directions, the strain they involve and the point to watch in your contract.
| Career field | Typical work | Note for BU |
|---|---|---|
| Actuarial work (Aktuariat) | tariff calculation, reserves, risk models | Mostly on screen; training runs through the German Actuarial Association |
| Data analysis and data science | models, evaluations, programming | Often in a home office; a referral to similar activities is possible |
| Finance and risk management | valuation, controlling, analyses under time pressure | Watch deadline and performance pressure as a mental strain |
| University research | proofs, models, teaching, third-party funded applications | Fixed-term contracts and changing tasks |
| Teaching mathematics | lessons, marking, preparation | Inability to serve under civil service law; see the teacher guide |
Screen work, concentration and health questions
Mathematical work requires concentrated thinking over long phases at a computer. This sounds harmless, but it affects the body: back and neck complaints, vision problems and exhaustion are typical issues. Mental complaints belong here too, if they have led to treatment.
For the application this means: if the insurer asks about treatments, diagnoses or medication, you must disclose everything that falls within the period queried. This also applies to phases in which you kept working but had complaints, without needing sick leave. Under § 19(1) VVG, what counts is what the insurer actually asked in text form. The principle of completeness is also explained in our guide Medical student disability insurance: timing and rules.
Referral in everyday mathematics
Mathematicians often move between research, data analysis and management. Under § 172(2) VVG, what counts is the profession you last practised. Under § 172(3) VVG, the insurer may additionally require that you do not take up any other activity that corresponds to your training, abilities and social standing.
This rule is particularly tricky here, because the training enables a wide range of activities. A post in data analysis may count for the insurer as an equivalent alternative, even if you personally do not want to work there. Read the referral clause very carefully and ask how the provider interprets it.
How to describe your occupation
The description of your occupation in the application is more than a formality. It determines which occupation the insurer uses as the basis when assessing a claim. If you combine research, teaching and data analysis, name the focus that takes up most of your time and list secondary activities separately.
The insurance sector also offers occupations with their own training routes, such as the actuary. Here the tasks differ strongly from pure research. A precise statement helps ensure that a later classification does not fail because of misunderstandings.
Worked example: cover for occupational disability
Assume you want to secure 1,200 euros per month in addition to your other income in the event of occupational disability. That is 14,400 euros per year. Compare this sum with your budget and with all the income that would fall away in an emergency. We deliberately do not name a premium, because it depends on the provider, your age and your health.
Frequently asked questions
Is mathematics a profession with a low BU risk?
There is no blanket assessment. Screen work carries different risks than physical occupations, but mental strain should not be underestimated. The insurer assesses your concrete target job, not the subject of study alone.
How does training as an actuary affect the application?
Training as an actuary is an additional qualification. Name it in the application if it applies to your target job, because it describes the activity more precisely. The classification remains the insurer’s decision.
Can I write data analysis as my target job into the contract?
You can describe the target job as you intend to pursue it, provided the provider accepts it. Ask which occupations the tariff covers. Whether the wording holds up later depends on the terms, not on your wish.
What if I move into teaching?
Then the question is incapacity to serve under civil service law, not only private BU. The differences are explained in the teacher guide listed below.
What to do now
- Write down your target job and two alternatives you can imagine.
- Check the referral clause in the terms before you submit an application.
- Answer health questions with treatment details, including mental health topics if you are asked about them.
- Compare offers by their conditions, not only by the premium.
