Many people with a doctorate ask whether the title can appear on their German identity card or passport. The answer depends on the document, the form of the title and the authority responsible. This guide explains what the Identity Card Act (Personalausweisgesetz, PAuswG) allows, which written form is possible and how to proceed with an application.

Short answer: The doctoral degree may appear on the German identity card. § 5 para. 2 no. 3 of the Identity Card Act (PAuswG) lists the doctoral degree as a permitted entry (as of October 2026). Whether and how you apply is decided by the identity card authority. The passport follows separate rules, which you should check with the passport authority.

The Key Points at a Glance

  • The identity card may show the doctoral degree (§ 5 para. 2 no. 3 PAuswG, as of October 2026).
  • Having the title entered is an option, not an obligation. The decision is yours.
  • Identity card and passport follow different rules. Responsibility lies with the authority at your place of residence.
  • Only a title you have actually earned may be used. Unauthorised use is a criminal offence (according to the Bavarian ministry guidance, last updated January 2023).
  • The permitted form depends on the origin and the form of award of the title. For German doctorates, the title with the subject suffix is customary.

May the Doctoral Title Go on the Identity Card?

The PAuswG sets out which details about the holder may be included. Under § 5 para. 2 no. 3, the identity card may contain the doctoral degree as a visibly printed entry. The law therefore expressly permits what many doctorate holders want. It does not require that the title is entered.

Whether the title goes on the passport is closely linked to the written form. The authority checks whether the title may be used at all and in which form. It is therefore worth looking at your doctoral certificate before you submit an application.

In Which Form May You Use the Title?

The form of the title determines how it appears on documents and in daily life. The guidance of the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts (last updated January 2023) describes the basic principles. In Bavaria they rest on the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act and supplementary decisions of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK). Other states may differ, so always check the rules of your own state.

  • The degree is normally used in its original form, including the name of the awarding university.
  • As an alternative, the abbreviation approved in the country of origin may be used, where it is recognised there.
  • For EU and EEA doctorates earned in a scientific doctoral procedure, “Dr.” may be used instead, without a subject suffix and without the country of origin. Using both abbreviations together is not permitted.

For a German doctorate, the title with a subject suffix, such as Dr. rer. nat. or Dr. iur., is customary. Whether the suffix appears on the document is decided by the authority under its own rules. Ask about this explicitly when you apply, so that the form on your identity card matches your doctoral certificate.

How Do You Proceed With an Application?

We have not checked in the statute whether an entry is made only on application or which documents are required. The local authority is therefore the reliable source. For the written form in particular, it is worth confirming in advance by email or phone.

  1. Check your doctoral certificate: note the title, the subject suffix and the awarding university exactly as they appear.
  2. Identify the responsible authority: the identity card authority at your place of residence is usually the first point of contact.
  3. Agree the form: ask how the title will be entered and which evidence is needed.
  4. Submit the application: send the documents on time and ask for the collection date.
  5. Clarify the passport separately: different rules apply, so ask the passport authority directly.

What Happens If the Title Is Used Incorrectly?

Anyone who uses a doctoral degree they have not earned commits a criminal offence. The Bavarian ministry guidance refers to § 132a of the German Criminal Code for this. If in doubt, have the written form confirmed in advance by the authority or the university rather than relying on assumptions.

The university can also explain how the title should appear in official documents. This is especially helpful for applications or documents for use abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Must I have the doctoral title entered on my identity card?

No. The entry is permitted, but not mandatory. You decide whether to have the title entered. If you only use the title in professional life, you do not need it on the card.

Can I have the title added later?

If you have earned the degree and meet the requirements, you can ask the authority about an entry. Whether this is possible on a card that is still valid, or only when a new card is issued, is decided by the authority.

Does the title also appear on the passport?

The passport follows its own rules in the Passport Act. Ask the passport authority whether, and in which form, the entry is possible. An entry on the identity card says nothing about the passport.

Which documents do I need?

The documents an authority requires are not the same everywhere. The doctoral certificate is the most important starting point, because it proves the title, the subject suffix and the awarding university. Ask before your appointment whether further evidence is needed, so that you do not have to go twice.

What should I know about foreign doctorates?

For foreign degrees, the original award certificate is decisive, because it determines the permitted form. The anabin database of the KMK helps with classification. The German guide Promovieren im Ausland covers foreign doctorates in more detail.

What to Do Next

  1. Find your doctoral certificate and note the title, the subject suffix and the university.
  2. Call or write to the identity card authority at your place of residence and ask about the form of the title.
  3. Confirm the required evidence and deadlines.
  4. Submit the application and clarify the collection date.
  5. Ask the passport authority about the passport separately.
